Please guys i need your suggestions… so i know alady who got a job in a hospital in the Uk whilst she was still in Nigeria. After she arrived the uk she got a letter from her manager, and used this letter to open a bank account( definitely she had no bills or credit history at the time). But she was able to open the bank account with the letter and brp card.

Now another lady has also gotten a job in the uk as a doctor.upon arrival, she requested a letter from her HR to open a bank account. She was issued the letter but no bank seems to be accepting the letter. I find this very confusing.
They all keep demanding for a proof of address. She is currently still squatting with a friend if not her best bet would have been her tenancy agreement.

Please does anyone know whats best for her to do?? Or how does she go about the whole bank account issue

Tell her to try the digital banks then. Both Transferwise (Wise) and Monzo will accept her passport/BRP alone and give her fully electronic accounts with debit cards to receive her salary and start off until she stabilises and can go for another bank if she wants. I even opened my Wise account using my Nigerian passport only.

Your best bet is a broker mainly because being on a student visa somewhat narrows pool of available banks. Be prepared for slightly higher interest rates. clean up your credit - if you have credit cards with large sums available to you, close them down, tighten your spending. Banks will allocate certain amounts to certain expenditures whether you spend at that limit consistently or not as long as it shows once in your accounts - ie if you paid 400 for childcare in May and 200 in June - they will use 400 x12 as that's a worst case scenario expenditure for you.

Your max borrowing will be 4 x times income and maybe less cos of being restricted to working 20 hours only. So your perceived 15% deposit might not be enough if you can pass the stress tests. Also even though interest rates are currently very low, it'll be stress tested at around 3% or even more depending on the bank. So they'll be wanting to see that if interest rates rise to that level, you can still afford it.

You say you're switching visas - from what category to student? Can you buy now before switching?

There are some small villages around the cities like Houghton conquest, Stony stratford, Amphill, Hanslope. Wooton, Woburn etc have you checked them they are not too expensive for renting and they are lovely places.

I'd take Bristol a million times over Essex. I am biaised though. We lived in Bristol for a long time. I've only commuted through Essex but looking at house and rental prices, Essex is expensive! Proximity to London cos it's a commuter area for London workers.

Although depends on where in Essex as well. I'd check rental prices and commute costs for both and choose based on that.

Go to HSBC or Barclays. They will take the letter . Unlike others, they appreciate potential. Goodluck

My Odyssey� (My One-Day London trip)


I hope this brief mini-adventure helps and informs someone's future decision or dealings with the NHC London.

There have been lots of stories and opinions about passport renewal in the UK. A few of them were positive while many (if not most) reviews were shocking and sad. So, I was prospectively dreading the process should it be my time to renew.

If I had other viable choices, perhaps, I would have considered them. But going back to Nigeria because of passport renewal was a big NO for me.

I applied for my renewal on the 23rd of December, 2020 via the Innovate1 platform. However, little did I know that it won't be possible to pick an appointment date.

Wetin man pikin go do na...I paid; hoping and believing that I will be scheduled for an appointment really soon.

I was not surprised. My biometrics appointment was sent sooner than I expected...I am sure you are now surprised.

An email for biometrics dropped after 7 months��, precisely on the 21st of July (some waited 10 months before getting their appointment). No thanks to the pandemic and backlogs of application.
The biometrics was scheduled for 27th July, between 11am and 1pm. Though, a 2-week grace period was stated in the email, I was not ready to take chances.

Since I live in one of the towns in far Northwest England, I decided to be a bit creative and take a few risks (thanks to my better-half for encouraging me)

I booked a same day return train ticket to London for 27th July.
Left my house at about 5:10am and arrived London Euston at about 10:10am.

It was my second time in London��. The first was in 2019.
Booked a taxi straight to NHC... Wished I had trekked though��. We were just moving at snail speed (traffic lights at almost every 100m��). I can't begin to imagine the stress londoners driving a manual transmission go through in the city.

Got to NHC at about 10:48am. As expected, there were some mild naija drama outside the NHC office but nothing too serious. I was just happy to witness the drama as I missed a lot of it since I arrived the Queens land��.

I was ushered into the NHC as soon as the staff confirmed my documents were complete. The crowd I met inside almost discouraged me as I practically wanted to ditch the whole process; obviously thinking when it would be my turn for biometrics.

To be honest, the process was quite fast. I left there at about 12:43pm. New Passport to be posted within the next 2 weeks (fingers crossed).

London Palava

Thinking about what to do with my spare time, it was necessary to activate my sight-seeing genes. I walked around and visited the London Eye. The ice-cream sold by the frozen yoghurt van in that area get as e be sha.

From there, I moved to Thames Clippers , swiped my card and enjoyed about a 45-minute River Thames boat cruise to North Greenwich Peninsula (passing under the London Bridge, Tower bridge, showing us the tower of London, the Shard and other historic places).
Arriving at the peninsula, had to visit the O2, Emirates Air line cable and experienced some 4D Rollercoaster.

Then, I decided to take 2 bus rides (108 and 15) from the peninsula to Charring cross. From there, I moved to Trafalguar Square where I rested for a while��. It was there I also saw the National Gallery.

Finally walked back to London Euston station after window shopping. Train left Lodon Euston at 18:23. Arrived my humble abode at about 23:30.

Do I wanna live in London... NO! NO!! NO!!!�‍♂️�‍♂️�‍♂️�‍♂️�‍♂️�‍♂️�‍♂️
Let the Londoners continue the lord's work there.

Will I be visiting again.. YES! YES!! YES!!! Probably with the family this time.

Lots and loads of places that could not be visited because of time�
