Vacation is here again. Time for students to rest and experience life outside the four walls of a school. But Summer Lesson has been abused and misused. Both parents and their wards have no idea what summer break should entails.

I stumbled on a letter on the net recently, which I deem fit to be shared here for the benefit of parents and their children.

Dear Parents,

A child will go to school by 7am and close by 5pm for five days out of the seven days in a week.

During weekends that child comes home with many assignments in all the subjects he or she is offering in school and at such, there won’t be time to rest and play at the weekends.

The child does that for almost four months hoping to enjoy the holidays only for the school (in collaboration with the parents) to come up with an unnecessary activities in the name of holidays lesson.

What exactly do you want to teach that child again at this period? Is it what he or she learnt in the just concluded session or what they will learn next term?

Dear Nigerian parents, summer holiday is a period you allow a child to experience other things in life apart from formal education.

Allow them to travel for the vacation and if you do not have money for that, take them to places where they will learn new skills.

Please stop that. Man must chop now. For some private schools, no salary during the holiday. It is the little you get during the summer school you have to manage with. If parents are not complaining please stop it. Besides, some parents want it because it is not easy to keep children at home doing nothing. Some parents will also go out for work and the children must be at somewhere safe.

Bro, If we can only stop being self-centered and put into consideration the future of this young ones, knowing the state of labour market in this country.
Schools can still make money by introducing these skills into their curriculum. It shouldn't just be about book, we can still educate them using various methodologies aside the normal classroom routine.
Thanks for your understanding.

the greed on the part of school owner. what disgust me most is their dumb and silly excuse of children brain becoming dull before resumption.

what a nasty excuse to milk unsuspecting parents.

You are correct. In some schools it is not only about book. They also do things like coding, cookery, dancing, sports etc. The only issue here is that they employ professionals from outside the teachers in school would be paid little or nothing. I have been in the system for more than two decades but then you are actually right.

There's nothing wrong with Summer Lessons. It is not made compulsory by any school in Nigeria.
Besides, Most children are usually idle during the Summer breaks and parents always prefer them engaged during that period than staying home playing from morning till night.
Leave the debate on the importance of summer lessons to parents.

Bro its not good.

Kids should dev other skills outside edu.

playing is not also bad. Kids learn to dev skill, bond, etc.
Fighting is not a bad idea if it was done for a good purpose. Na still a skill kids dey dev. They should be tot how to use it for good.

Not bad.

Its high time we realise edu is over hyped. We should find our life path, thats the real edu.

Kids should instead learn real skills like, repairing gadgets, robotics, fabrication, fashion and d, etc. Instead or relearning and relearning what I call hyped and irrelevant knowledge.

Most parents only do so to delegate their parental responsibilities.

Many people are too busy chasing nonsense up and down to give attention to their wards.

True talk.

Children are not allowed to be
children to enjoy their childhood.

Short time, they grow out of childhood
& enter university & the years of being
kids are gone forever.

They should travel during holidays to
their villages or to relations in other
parts of the country, even for 2 to 4
weeks.

It gives them the chance to see their
country & make new friends for life.

We all know that the security situation
in 9ja should make us careful.

Government primary/secondary schools were designed to dismiss around 2pm every day. Sometimes I wonder what is complicated in the syllabus that they now stay up till 5pm, Has the syllabus been expanded or what? Most departments in the universities hardly stay up to 5pm daily. As that's not enough, holiday lessons are now added. Pupils/students of nowadays dey try shaa

Oga there is no best method to train children, if your children are the noisy type, give them something to engage them.

Whatever works for you, do it.

if you think Nigeria kids are under pressure, check helicopter mum's in the USA. or tiger mum in Asia who pressure their kids to succed academically by all means.

the world is changing rapidly, kids with good education get an unfair advantage over their mates, I still regret growing up without a library

In our house, you dare not read or study during holidays. It was meant for enough play, adventure and rest. Some long vacation, my parents will send us to the village. We will join village boys to set traps for bush meat, visit streams, adventure through the bushes and farms, and of course, have plenty rest.

In Nigeria, we are fond of overdoing things. From religion to education.
The white brought Christian religion, today we are more Christian than those brought the gospel with churches littered all over our street

The white brought their system of education well planned (terms with holiday in between) for all round development of a child. Today, school owners because of greed for money and parents because of laziness, shying away from their responsibilities do not want children to rest in the name of learning.

Holiday is a time for rest not a time for learning.

You are advising parents against "holiday lessons" while encouraging "learning new skills". What is the difference there?
Allow those kids to rest joor.

I see nothing wrong with the idea of summer lessons. Let's not forget that some teachers will not eat if such lessons don't hold.

Also, banish the idea of learning a skill during that period, it's way too short. If you want to really learn a skill, take a gap year after secondary school and do so.

On traveling, summer lessons are no hindrance to it because it's not even compulsory you attend except for those going to SS3. Besides, how many parents have the time and money to afford 3 - 4 weeks of traveling with their kids.

This is what I'm discussing with my wife, that what is our 3years son going to learn at summer lesson? We should leave the boy to play around but madam refuse.
The thing is parent are so lazy, they can't stand their children wahala grin
Another is work, you can't take your children to work during this holiday, so parent opt for summer lesson.
