Show of force: Nigeria fighter jets fly over Gambia’s Airspace

January 19, 2017

Nigeria’s fighter jets have been flying over The Gambia as West African regional forces continue to flex their muscles ahead of a military intervention to oust former President Yahya Jammeh.

Jammeh has refused to step down for the swearing in of President-elect Adama Barrow.

Jammeh’s fourth five-year term as president expired at midnight on Wednesday but he has refused calls to step down following his defeat in last month’s elections.

Lamin Njie a resident of Lameng, a small town several kilometers from the capital Banjul told the African Press Agency that fighter jets have been flying overhead since the early afternoon.

Lameng is a few miles from the country’s only airport in Yundum, African Review reported.

Deal of the day
Noting the same experience on his Facebook page, Kebba Sanneh a resident of Gambia’s biggest town Serrekunda wrote ominously: “This war is almost here…I can hear fighter jets hovering overhead fast as they circulate and disappear into the horizon towards the Atlantic. Call it warning but there is high probability that the skies over this little republic will be busy in the hours and days ahead…..”.

Although The Gambian military has no known fighter jets, there were reports of anti-aircraft guns being positioned in the approaches to major towns and barracks.

Aside from jets Nigeria’s newest warship had been deployed to the waters overlooking State House in Banjul where former President Jammeh appears to be holed up after rejecting a last-ditch attempt by the Mauritanian leader to persuade him to step down.

Meanwhile as Ecowas ground troops amass inside the Senegal border to the north and south, the streets of cities and towns in The Gambia remain eerily deserted and quiet throughout Thursday as civilians stay indoors amidst a sense of angst over a likely invasion.

Lurker4Long:

4 different commands in 1 theatre of operations is going to be a problem down the line. SADC, Rwanda, Mozambique military, and Moz police paramilitary.

Yes, Moz military and Moz police are rivals.
As an example:
1) the insurgents assassinatated the National Director of Reconnaissance of the Police Rapid Intervention Unit and took the town of Quissanga; the Moz military used this to argue they should have operational control.

2) with responsibility now shifted to the military, they promptly brought in the Russian PMC, Wagner. An opaque decision, Wagner were brutally and comprehensively defeated by the insurgents, and the port city of Mocimboa da Praca fell to the insurgents. The paramilitary police used this to argue the military were out of their depth.

3) with the police RIU back in ops command, they brought in the SA/Zimbabwean PMC Dyck Advisory Group(DAG), who, unlike Wagner, at least had experience in working in Cabo Delgado. DAG had some success in pushing back the insurgency, but with the Moz military and police not collaborating but competing, they were on a hiding to nothing. The end result? The fall of the port city of Palma - the logistics hub of the gas industry concerns of French, Italian, South African, US, Chinese, UK, Portuguese commercial interests in that order.

The fall of Palma was the proverbial straw, and SADC had had enough. The elite in Maputo could no longer prevaricate and claim to have the situation at hand.

Faced with a SADC mission they did not want - SADC has demanded a political, social and economic solution which addresses the legitimate grievances of the people in Cabo Delgado province, the kleptocracy in Maputo thought they could stall through a quick military win by inviting Rwanda.

Too many people in Pres Felipe Nyusi's circle are making too much money from smuggling out rubies, heroin from Pakistan through the ports in Cabo Delgado. The insurgents are doing exactly the same to finance their war.

Thanks for this comprehensive breakdown. Ten likes! There's always been a nexus between drugs, crime, insurgency, local politics and higher international geo political theatre. Here's the Burkinabe defmin talking to your press 2 yrs back.

“I think there’s a big business behind all these things, that has little to do with religious motivations. These people have a lot of money to recruit youth, to pay them, to pay their families. The Sahel is a big trafficking zone. The traffickers sell cheap cigarettes. They arrive in Benin, or Togo. They go through Burkina Faso or maybe Niger. Then it goes through the desert zone of Mali. Actually the Algerian generals are complicit in this trafficking. Then it goes to Europe…this same network is being used by the drug dealers of Latin America.”
https://mg.co.za/article/2019-06-04-00-i-question-frances-motives-says-burkina-fasos-defence-minister/

Fyi,we've also had a deep Pakistani element in a massive increase in heroin smuggling since the late 90s. Our first major player was a Palestinian born Mombasa based transhipper,Ibrahim Akasha, thought to be an active PLO member who had an ex German GSG-9 bodyguard. Til his assassination in 2000 in Amsterdam he was the biggest player in the region.
I realised later AQ Khan, the father of the Pakistani nuke program utilised the exact route and method, ships and final overland transport to get his toys to Gaddaffi in Libya!

In 2014 a ship from Pakistani with 400 kg of heroin was interdicted off Lamu and blown up by presidential order. Certain people screamed in outrage, specifically, the 2 opposition leaders;Kalonzo and Raila. Apparently their cut from the transshipment would've funded their operations while the Mombasa governor, whose elder bro is a KNOWN DRUG SMUGGLER,allegedly passed out when the load was destroyed.

Hassan Joho fainted the day Narcotics Ship was blown up – Nandi Governor Sang
https://kenyanreport.com/2019/02/06/hassan-joho-fainted-the-day-narcotics-ship-was-blown-up-nandi-governor-sang/

Today,Garissa and many Somali towns are flooded with meth used by the jihadists. ISIS controlled regions are overflowing with tramadol. Sierra leonian child fighters used heroin injected directly via cuts in the scalp. Look at old pix of W A child soldiers-you'll see many have a bandage on their head: within was a couple of grammes of heroin of varying purity which ofc increased with the childs tolerance level.

Edit: how many think these simple Sahelian Fulani nomads are smuggling drugs, weapons and people on their own!?

This is not correct at all.

What did West-African nations do in Gambia then?

There was a naval, air and land blockade.

Your comment is simply not correct.

Most ECOWAS nations are french puppet states whoes wealth is stashed far away. South and East Africa is different. "France Afrique" can only give mostly moral support.

Nigeria sent NNS Centenary, we also sent Alpha jets, C-130's and A-109 helicopters.

Senegal sent most of the land armour, supported by Ghanaian and Ivorian armour.

Remember West-African nations also had troops in Mali, with Chad, Senegal, Benin, Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso contributing.

Not including the operations of MNJTF collectively and Nigeria, Chad , Niger and Cameroun were conducting individually in their various countries.

So when we look at the relative stability of SADC countries over high risk in ECOWAS countries, who really is punching above their weight?

So again I ask, what can ECOWAS learn from this SADC deployment in Mozambique.

I fail to see it, please enlighten me.

Top South African defence analyst Helmoed Heitman told defenceWeb the “sluggish response” by both the regional bloc and South Africa was “embarrassing, even allowing for the delay caused by Mozambique not timeously signing the Status of Forces agreement”.

By comparison, the Rwandan response was decisive, with reports from the east African country having it combined Mozambican/Rwandan forces retook villages and other positions in Cabo Delgado from Ansar al-Sunna soon after arriving in the east African country. Earlier this week, Rwandan soldiers apparently killed around 70 insurgents during clashes around Palma ahead of efforts to retake Mocimboa da Praia.

Heitman maintains the SADC force will not be strong enough

Shortcomings in reconnaissance capability (a pair of hand-launched UAVs), air mobility (two utility helicopters and zero relevance for transport aircraft) and air support (two attack and two armed rotorcraft) add up to a too small, too lightly armed force with inadequate reconnaissance, mobility and air support, he warns.

https://www.defenceweb.co.za/featured/top-analyst-expresses-doubts-about-competency-of-sadc-mozambique-force/

Again i ask, what can ECOWAS really learn from SADC?

I see nothing here of note to learn, none at all.

Only 4 armed helios + no Jets ? Seriously?! That's inadequate from their government considering down time and possible emergency response for their GI's. Unless they only intend to be on the defensive. Did their Government not learn from Battle of Bangui?

I'm tired of going back and forth on this man. When countries of the caliber of Rwanda, Botswana, Zimbabwe (No disrespect to them) in ECOWAS can deploy as I have seen (by pictures of course) then we'd be better for it

Well, nothing new to see. How was our deployment to Mali? (AFISMA)

Anyway, SADC deployment will only get better. And in case you have forgotten my original post

I'm really impressed with how member countries are pulling their own weight . ECOWAS states should learn a thing or two
That's the crux. Let's agree to disagree

Rwanda is not in SADC. It is an East-African nation.

Mozambique - South-Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and Angola.

Gambia - Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Togo.

Simultaneously West-African Troops were also in Mali - Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Chad, Benin, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Niger, Togo all deployed there.

How you can say ECOWAS has something to learn from SADC when ECOWAS successfully conducted two large operations at the same thing is amazing.

I want you to tell us how you came by this conclusion?

It makes no sense to me that's why i'm asking.

I said ECOWAS member states FGS! Yes, the big boys in the neighborhood may have nothing to see there but how about countries like Burkina Faso, CIV even Ghana!

I added Rwanda because I'm making reference specifically because of middleweights and featherweights in our own neighborhood.
And what operations was successful? Afisma? It failed woefully!

Concerning each member states deployments to Moz. My indices is in the spectrum of Logistics.

Senegal and Ghana have similar economies to Botswana.

Afisma did not fail, Tchad was the main fighting force on the ground, along with France.

Well, there is nothing ECOWAS can learn from this deployment of SADC in Mozambique.

ECOWAS has carried out far more complex deployments, sometimes 2 of such deployments in tandem.

Just as anticipated. Not the Rwandans. The expectation is they should surge and dominate the area hibernated by terrorists. There should be a difference when they do at least as expected. They have the units to do it.
