Most private hospitals are guilty of high bills. There was a time around 2017, I was having a chest pain in the night, so I went to one private hospital the next street. When I got there, they gave me injections with some drugs and placed me on a drip then I asked the doctor, what was really wrong with me, he said don't worry you will be fine. In the morning they gave me another drip, I now wondered what was really the problem because at the time I no longer felt any pain again. They later brought the bill around 12pm. When I saw it, I shouted aunty nurse wetin be dis? She said, na your bill nah! my bill was 27k. I asked her how come for just ordinary chest pain? She said, you slept on the bed. After some arguments here and there, I paid 18k and left.
baba you were having a heart attack, he can't reveal it to you because you might panic and ur BP will sky rocket.

You could have helped her campaign to raise money. That would have been a more logical help.

The thing is, she wasn’t thinking right and you being in the health sector should have known better. She ain’t getting any medical help again from that particular hospital in the future without first clearing the former bill. It’s going to be written boldly on her folder that she absconded and the total amount owed will be indicated.

Have you ever wondered why you find some patients spend like 5 months plus in the hospital after treatment? (Especially orthopedic patients)Not that they cannot abscond, after all, they are allowed to go about their daily stuff and return to the ward until bills are cleared. These guys understand the value of integrity and the fact that some emergencies can land them in that same hospital in future.
Some people get lucky along the line to find private NGOs clearing their bills or hospital management halving it and sometimes writing it off totally.

Good health is everything and shouldn’t be taken for granted.

NHIS is only for government workers. How many government workers do we have in Nigeria?

Nope, not just government workers.

There is a friend who needed to have an expensive surgery at UCH last year. They told us to go and prepare for about a million naira.

But someone advised us to register him for NHIS. It took us like almost two months before his registration was completed. We took it down to the hospital for the surgery.

The surgery was eventually performed and the total money spent wasn't even up to 60,000NGN. I was shocked!

After everything was done. I ran back to NHIS office o also register myself and family but I was told registration has been stopped.

Omo the thing pain me die.

So they will hold me there when I don't have more than that to pay. Before they started I asked them how much it will cost me, the doctor said I shouldn't worry.

My hospital bill experience....

I was pregnant and had life threatening complications. I was on referral to this big government hospital. I was a bit weak and could barely stand for few minutes. The pregnancy was just a couple of months old, wasn't showing yet. When my family (husband, mum, sister and brother) dropped me at the hospital, they were looking for where to get the card and other stuff but me I walked with the lil strength in me to the emergency section. I handed the referral letter to the nurse on duty, she read and asked me where is the person. I told her it was me. She was shocked and swung into action. She made a bed quickly, made me lie on it, fix the drip and all. Remember, nobody had billed me, I haven't even consulted with any doctor, she also didn't see anybody with me.

When my people sorted out the formalities, registration and all, they came to the emergency and saw me already receiving treatment. They said doctors will see me shortly. It was a weekend so we waited a while. The doctors came and their diagnosis? They said my kind of ectopic pregnancy was rare. They'd try two possible options for surgery, if one doesn't work, the other would. The pregnancy had to go. It was painful. I read up their diagnosis on Google, 0.02% of people had ever presented with it. Rare indeed!

They booked me for surgery the following day, they didn't ask for Kobo. The surgery was successful but I needed time to recuperate. I was there for another ten days. Each time my husband asked about the bill, they'd say they know we'd pay. I'd laugh inside. What made these people so sure? We did pay eventually. No baby and still had to part with about 200k. I knew I got to heaven's gate and really wanted to enter But I thank God ultimately for life.

The beauty of this is the promptness to save life. They didn't place premium on money first, yet it was a government hospital. Before I got admitted there, I knew nobody but the treatment I got was top notch.

Go and build your own hospital and treat people for free. Only if you know how they struggle financially. Health is expensive and individuals can't pay out of pocket, that's what you all don't understand. This is why advanced countries don't joke with insurance

I remembered I helped a mother who gave birth but lost the child to escape about 2 years ago
Haha
She gave birth to the child through SVD, but child was underweight, didn’t make it in the end after some treatment in the SCBU before transfer to neonatal ward.. no money to pay for bills, her baby daddy left her there.. we are from same tribe and we met each other in a strange land so we talked very well as I was an intern in that government hospital..
she spent up to two months in the hospital because they will not let her go, her load was packed to one side with other mothers that can’t pay too, They can’t escape with load because security will ask them at the gate.

Na so we plan am o, she began dropping her stuffs with me small small, and I took it to my place not far from the hospital, did it for 3 days I think and when it was complete, she just strolled out to come pack everything and she disappeared, never heard from her since then, 2019. Whew what a mess

A total expense of my client at UBTH was approx 1million Naira as he had an accident and needed surgery bla bla the most annoying part is my client has a health insurance policy with Axa Mansard but UBTH said Axa Mansard rarely pay them back therefore my client has to pay first. My client called Axa Mansard staffs and they told him to proceed that he’ll be reimbursed

He made payments himself and as soon as he was discharged he contacted Axa Mansard and they told him to forget his money that they won’t reimburse him..

Axa Mansard is a fraudulent insurance company!!!

I asked them what it will cost me from the beginning, they said I shouldn't worry about it. Do they know my pocket on what I could afford. If they had told me from the beginning, I would have walked into another hospital as there are about four of them not that far from each other. I went to a government maternity center for the same issue a year later and I paid N1800.

I used to think it's only for government workers too but I inquired at their office 2 weeks ago and they said families can be registered too. 60k annually for a family of 4 and 45k for a family of 3

I understand you but you clearly stated government hospital. You should do more research on how government hospitals are funded, infact let me tell you they're funded from crude oil sells and not even profit driven, is more like a social welfare. You certainly can't compare this with someone's personal investment, think very well without bias bro. Even you as the hospital owner wont run it as a charity home.

Read my reply very well. I asked them what it will likely cost me, they said I shouldn't worry. Do they know my financial strength on what I could afford to pay? If they had told me and I couldn't afford it, I would have gone to another one on the same street.

There is room for private individuals under NHIS. A lot of private companies have their staff under NHIS

Hospital this days are just to suck you of your funds. Even if you are under HMO , They treat you low and give you cheap and inferior drugs that they know wont cure you and they will forward outrageous bill to your HMO to pay. Now i dont waste time going to hospital. All i do is go to pharmacy and give them my complains to prescribe for me and am good to go. Its more cheaper and less time consuming.
