It is not government that will solve the problem of local production for you! Government will not grow rice for you, nor will government pump gas for you!

All government can do is provide an environment for you to want to do those things for yourself by banning imports, for instance, so I can charge you more for my local rice which will incentivise me to plant more to sell to you and earn more. Same with vat on imported gas which will make imported more expensive and make you buy my cheaper local gas.

I mean, you don't expect me to labour on my farm or pump my gas because of my love for you, right, but because of the profit I intend to make.

Prof, do you expect me to labour in charity on your behalf so that you do not starve? If so, wake up please because there is absolutely no reason for me to love you that much!

As for why imported is more expensive, the reason is because we are too lazy to grow our own and import instead. If I grow my local own, it may seem more expensive for you the buyer, but the economy benefits because I'd be paying wages to those who help me produce which increases gdp and benefits society in general since my employees will spend locally, and I'd be paying local taxes which would benefit schools and hospitals and roads etc.
Not the government who will solve local gas? Did you just type this?

Maybe I should ask you who own all Natural gas found within the country. Citizens? It seems to me that you probably want to be on the side of the government deliberately.

Natural gas, mineral resources and crude oil are all owned by the government.

So, tell me again if the government isn't the problem.

Some of us have already paid the taxes. I pay tax monthly and also pay VAT.
Now, what have they done with those taxes?
You have to show us what you've done if you want us to pay more

Owned by government, perhaps, but you'd find government does not mine these mineral resources out of the ground.

I'd even argue that government does not exactly own those mineral resources at all since those mineral resources are lying untapped in the ground until someone is given a concession to mine it out of the ground. I mean, have you not heard of the numerous Nigerians becoming billionaire owners of oil fields? Oil, is a mineral resourse, right?

Unfortunately, you don't make them show you what they do with the tax you already pay, and when they tax you more you'd very likely just pay it.

Trust me. They love the fact that you don't make them show you what they do with the tax you pay monthly.

Hopefully, it will be a consideration of yours and many of us at the next election where we make the tax we pay monthly and also VAT more of an issue than the ethnicity or tribe or religion of those who ask us to elect them.

how did u arrive at d conclusion that "dont want to pay tax on anything"? pls what is d meaning of indirect tax? what do u mean by "realistic taxes"? u are comparing nigeria with developed countires and u say they live by taxes. before u carry iut that comparison, pls compare governance in developed countries and nigeria. is there any difference? how are taxes used in developed countries and how are they used here in nigeria? any difference?

They are not owners but Government gave them license which is for a period of time. In all of this, government is still a decider why do you think there is a government parastatal called PPRA?

Government owns all. Make findings rather than take sides with the government.

It is now clear this govf erroneously believes taxing the perceived middle class to share to the alleged poorest of the poorest is a viable economic policy. It is catastrophic. Like Prof. Jega rightly noted, we are cursed with vision less leaders.

I do not expect to earn my rights to a better living without it costing me I'm afraid. History has taught me that I earn my rights with the shedding of my blood and sometimes even my life so others may have those rights. It's how we got democracy, you will find. Some people shed blood and even died so that I get to vote today, which is why it is my duty to be extremely diligent in electing my leaders, so that the labours of my heroes past is not in vain.

Pity, later generations, us, have not quite been as diligent as we should have been, hence our wailing now and the need to give more of our blood and lives so our own children do not wail like we are.

May our children find it in them to forgive us if we refuse to make the necessary sacrifice so they don't wail like we are wailing, because they would see how we wailed on NL but refused to sacrifice so they don't have to, and I doubt they'd respect us for it.
True, u r correct in every sense. However Should we continue to shed our blood to justify the labour of our heroes past and also that posterity will sing our songs in the history of time to the future generations.

At some point, we've got to look at the cards and read them as they are.
I say this categorically: Nobody is willing to die for true futuristic ideology or vision in Nigeria.

All we have are pump and dump freedom fighters, from the NLC to the rest of them playing same old stories with different characters. The politicians and stakeholders know this and that's why they don't break a sweat to hijack, manipulate, override, hold us by the neck to keep to statuesquo and in order for their pay masters.

These are not the times of Moses, who pleaded with God not to destroy the Israelites when they proved stubborn, in these days, your own person go follow plot your downfall either for bribe or other selfish reasons.

How many leaders today do u know for one true legacy. How many heads of state have left us a true legacy and what current true legacy are we getting from the present one.

Legacy is an ideology polished in vision for the achievement of a better future. How many Nigerian leaders have given us that. Rather, the people are subjected to more difficult economy than the last one.

Everyone fighting now are like children who are crying for meat in their soup not as a child who's hopes and aspirations have been shattered. Otherwise by now, our votes will count as more people will be engaged and our voices will be louder to protect our hopes and aspirations.

When it comes to paying high you people refers to develop countries, how about giving us the basic amenities in the developed nations. Bad road, no steady electricity, no water, no fuel production in the country etc. You won't refer or say go to develop countries....the good thing about it is that you are not exempted from the high cost of living

Most of the good amenities in developed countries come from the high taxes, and high bills they pay.

I know one doctor who refused to japa to the UK, because in the UK, his taxes will eat half his salary.

When I hear Nigerians saying that the government should provide good amenities, before they pay high taxes, I laugh. All the good amenities in foreign countries...were paid for by high taxes and by high bills on the populace. Abroad, fuel production works because people pay for petrol at market price, not subsidised price. Water bills are very high, electricity bills can be high and all the roads are tolled...plus there are things like congestion charge.

We don't have good things in Nigeria because our economy is dependent on oil...whose price we no control and whose price is rarely at a level that would sustain all of us...Meanwhile, our tax to gdp ratio is 6.1%, we tax 30% of the population, and leave the rest free...and we subsidize petrol and power...so much that the companies there cannot make profits to build new refinereis and power stations, and exisitng ones are bad because they have been run at a loss.

Serious countries with all the anemities pay taxes at rates of 46-51%, and also have much higher tax to gdp ratios. And their gdps are higher than Nigeria.

What makes me annoyed about Nigerians is that you guys expect a Ferrari at the cost of a toyota. You don't want to do the hard work of building a working economy, nor do you want to do the hard work of putting pressure on your politicians. Most of you just want your side in power so that you can get crumbs from the table...APC or PDP.

And no, I do not support Buhari, nor do I support PDP, or any party. I just know that the cold reality is Nigeria is a poor and broke country, and the stealing that happens on top makes it worse.

Futuristic, lol.

Go about on Nairaland and see us presently wailing all over the place. Now ask why I would ask anyone to fight for futuristic when we have quite a lot to fight for today!

We must fight not for posterity or for some future generation. We must fight for ourselves and for today!

As to your question about leaders, I'd beg us to not see ourselves as followers who require leaders, because the days of Moses playing our messiah has long gone, as you have pointed out in our 'leaders' lacking legacies.

We must now consider picking up our own crosses and leading ourselves if not others, because I'm certain you are not willing to die for anyone. I sure as hell ain't!

I guess you are not recognising that we are a democracy now. You must have heard it means "government for the people by the people", after all, its not as if the current government just arrived from outerspace and imposed itself on us. In fact did Buhari not beg us 3 times to let him lead us before we agreed on his third beg?

Atiku is going to beg us to let him lead us at the next election, him or Mr Bullion van, and if we are unfortunate we will agree to let one of them rule us knowing one will sell NNPC to - well, let me let you tell me who - while the other, bullion vans I guess. Then, might we understand that we are the one's in charge of our government and we are responsible for our wailing, because I am sufficiently informed that we are not yet ready to take the responsibility that our democracy has placed in our hands!

Not charging local producers vat, is a tax break! Besides, wood and kerosene is not exactly as cheap as you think, nor as convenient, especially if you do not live in a forest.

You've been given a reasonable amount of time for local production to reach a reasonable point. That time is now up. Sorry.
U don't need to leave in a forest to use firewood, firewood is sold everywhere, open ur eyes when travelling u will see firewood and charcoal sellers everywhere. If gas sells for 10k, kerosene will be cheaper because u can't spend 10k on kerosene in a month.

I live in a village surrounded by firewood, and not only is it not cheap, its very inefficient too, and I don't think gas will hit 10k anytime soon.

But hey, you go cook with firewood and charcoal. Me, I like my shiny stainless steel pots to remain shiny.
