Gregyboy, you may have missed this as well

Truthvalue:
I notice that the words Ouéni (Benin) and Awani (Lagos) have very similar french pronounciations, and these words were both wriiten down by french vistors to the region who were spelling local words in order to reflect the sounds which they were hearing. To me this signifies that the awori are just ordinary Edo people named after their location, just like Esan or Itsikeri or Benins or Akoko. What do you think ?

There is no eyewitness account of Lagos without the lordship of the Oba of Benin. So it would be nice to stop hearing stories of Lagos being invaded by the Oba of Benin, as it stands, Lagos' history starts with the Oba of Benin's military commander administering Lagos.

Also, the british colonial papers referred to the Lagos royal house as: house of Ado. Lagos was just an ordinary part of Benin empire, although most of the international trade of Benin empire seem to have taken place in Lagos.

Gregyboy, you misded this as well
Truthvalue:
I am pretty sure that if an awori had moved from Lagos to Esanland in the middle ages, he would have automatically become an Esan, and if an Esan had moved from Esanland to Lagos, he would have automatically become Awori. All these "tribes" stuff seem to have been brought to us by the british who needed to devide the people in order to make governance easy for the british.
When dealing with history, one needs to not confuse the current situation with that of the passed. There are lots of things which have changed with time.

Gregyboy, it is sad to see but, you are only one step better than tao and that is not sufficient in anyway.

It seems a lot of you in nigeria have some sort of mental blocking which won't allow your brains function to the fullest.

There is always some irrationality in the corner with you guys.
Re: The Name Lagos, Was Called Ekonunuame By The Benins by Nobody: 2:21am On Aug 13, 2021
1) what is yoruba:
yoruba comes from yarri.ba which was one of the names of oyo kingdom.

2) Lagos was never recorded as being part of oyo kingdom

3) later on yoruba was used as a brand which included a lot of people who were previously unrelated: slaves dumped by europeans on our shores, dahomians, jebus, oyos, and some Edo who were in the "wrong" geographical location, and some other groups of people.

You know all this, but you have some intellectual blocking like many nigerians especially the yorubas in here.
Re: The Name Lagos, Was Called Ekonunuame By The Benins by Nobody: 2:23am On Aug 13, 2021
yoruba itself at inception is not even a people, it is a geographical location.

This were you also get it wrong britsh didnt invent tribal segregation in Nigeria or Africa neither did they do the groupings themselves we Nigerians did

Aworis are not edos

Forcing aworis as edo is like thesame thing Tao11 is currently doing to falsely turn oba of benin as a yoruba man, or the yorubas claiming edo state state as Yoruba state

I dont also buy on your dwellings on eyewitness account as long is an old document which doesn't predate 1897 it is accepted

You have not stayed in Nigeria for long like we have, what you're doing calling aworis edos will only promote hate....

Edo and esans are the true edos, the rest are foreigners

The britsh once ruled over Nigeria doesnt make Nigerians britsh

Ijebus were tribes before Nigeria was formed
Yorubas were different tribes

These two tribes came together on their own to join as Yorubas

Anyone can lecture anyone... Being a Genius is not the gift of old age its a gift giving regardless of age...

Humility is key....

Nevertheless your point is baseless and would never be accepted

If in the past the Europeans used landmass to associate tribes that was their own understanding and if the aworis were never Yorubas in the past now they are.... We know Yorubas is a more of a political and lingua entity and not necessarily ancestory persay

If even if they claim to be edo today , they wouldn't be edo enough

Only the royal house are edos.

Sometimes when I see we edos lay claims to other tribes i feel its our minority complex kicking in, i just observe and remain mute...

Seems you have more of the Nigerian mentality than i, the Nigerian mentality of self acclaiming tribe

Hey baldie — aka Truthvalue;

Is it possible that you will ever achieve freedom from European mutilations and sloppy renderings of native African words/names?

We own the name. We call it Awori (classic: Aħori). We informed the Europeans about it. They noted it. They put it down in writings, but with their usual shallow, sloppy & mutilated renderings, viz. Ahouy, Awani, etc. among several other mutilations.

Hopefully, the insecure @Truthvalue will inform us on how the different contradictory mutilated EUrOpEaN spellings (of which there is at least six) is to be given precedence above what was passed down to us by my people as the pronunciation of their own name.

As a side-note, he should (as a matter of consistency) also demonstrate how pre-1900 English people knew what pronunciation goes for the letters of the English alphabet. NB: Their predecessors wrote & pronounced these letters before them. cheesy

Appendix:
(1) The present Oba of Lagos declared the following (in separate contexts though):

(A) Lagos does not belong to Benin kingdom.

(B) The Alaafin of Oyo is my father.

(2) Writings from the late-1700s declare that Lagos is Awori land.

(3) If we are to stoop low to read maps like an autistic (i.e. like @Truthvalue), the obvious conclusion from the pre-colonial map attached below is that:

GUINEA conquered and owns Benin kingdom cheesy

Peace! cheesy

The Yorubas have existed as an ethnic-group by that name prior to the 1600s [among other names].

PROOF:
The 1st screenshot shows a manuscript from the year 1615, written by a Songhai scholar, featuring different West African ethnic-groups one of which is the Yoruba.

The 2nd screenshot shows a recent English translation of this manuscript prepared by experts (John Hunwick & Fatima Harrak) for the institute of African studies in Rabat, Morocco.

Sometimes aound the turn of the last two centuries, a British colonial officer at Ijebu-Ode documented an account of the Ijebus as received from the indigenous authorities themselves.

The early Ijebu traditions have it that the Ijebus are descended from Ife.

~ National Archives, Ibadan (NAI) IjeProf. 9/2, Letter Book, 1904-1908, W. Stanley Hern, “A Report on the District of liebu-Ode for the New Civil Service list,” 1 October 1906.

My brother there is nothing like true Edo. By DNA, the etsakos, Owans, some Akokos both in Edo and Ondo,Urhobos, and even some Ijaws are of the same very stock with us, the same very stock my brother, Language is one of the greatest factor if not the greatest factor in deciding brotherhood and relationship among tribes. If two tribes are far apart, and they speak the same language or language that is close, Then they are brother tribes and are from the same stock.
I know you won't tell pally IRIASE from Otuo that he is not Edo, he is a proud one and would ask you if he is not Edo then what is he, Is it Ozekhome from Etsako who bears Akpakpavighivighi one of Edo land , and he is also a proud one my brother.
When an UNUNOZEDO( the mouth that speaks Edo) conference was held in lagos, these men attended and in their grace too.because they are in the truest sense of the word, they are , in ancestry and in DNA.

Thry are true edos and they sub edos

The true edos are the edos that are less mixed
Edo and esan

Tell me have you ever heard in history were the oba if benin went as far as estako to have his wife but they go as far as esan to to have their wives...

I have stayed in estako and urhobo land those people are too mixed to be regarded as true edos the instant you claim them as edos the more problem you give to the edo people

I know you're trying to amass population for we edos for political benefits ... By calling every tribe benin had connection with as true edos...
Nah, true edos are esans and benin the rest are sub edoid which embrace all the groups you mentioned up there

Everything shouldn't be politics these is were we messed our history up with the yorubas for political advantage

what I am trying to tell you is that in terms of ancestry, descent and DNA, they are of the same very stock with us, have you heard an etsako man speak, or you are just dismissing them base on emotions, are you aware Owan can hear Esan, not a minimal level, but to an appreciable level like 70 percent, are you aware some Esan clans can hear some Urhobo also to an appreciable level, the Oba marrying from them changes nothing it might be some agreement or part of a military pact so the Esans who are Essentially warriors would see the central stool as theirs too and therefore not attack it, If Ozolua does not consider them as part of Us, he won't stay substantial years of his life in afemai deterring attack on this part of the kingdom that some of them refer to him as their father today.

You dont even know benin history and i dobut if you have stayed in other part of Edo state

Owan people are the afuze, sabogida ora...and most of these edo sub groups majourly flock in their education at auchi poly, which i once attended myself

If an estako man speaks pigin or his local dialect i can spot him right away from the crowd this how much i know them

Their language is similar to edo and they share ancestory with we benins no doubt, but they are heavily mixed bro... They hardly hear the benin language me and benin friends would speak benin in their mist to hide our conversation from them if we are discussing, only few words are similar to the benins....

They are too mixed to be regarded as true edos i have also been to esan areas, those people sometimes are more benim than we benins ourselves, our old cultural practice that has faded out in benin are still been practice there, even when we mock them they are not full edo, they will tell you, they are and benin is their senior

But the case is different in estako they align more with the yorubas and igala, they even think benins are Yoruba's na that one dey vex me pass

If an esan man speaks you can here 70 percent of the conversation as a benin man

And again ozolua regarded esans as edo he wanted to bring the esans under his full control which they resisted, we really dont know the true history guess the palace would know better, and he was in esan land fighting and not edo north, until he was betrayed and killed

You be Goat o na auchi you go then you dae follow me dae nack teeth, it has been proven time and time again that Owan can hear central Esan,(such as Uromi,Irrua, Ewu) because Esan themselves are not one in language, someone will push a truck before a Man from Ekpoma will converse with a man from Ohordua efficiently. There are very few persons who love Edo the way I do and I have taken my time to study these dialects and languages. You will only see them as non Edos if you have a dismissive spirit and a mind made up against them. I have an ancestor from there and as a result in my younger days have been to Ewu, Ewohimi, and Ekpoma. My Father till date can speak fluent Esan. Some of his siblings who are Full Esans can't even speak up to his level. My grandfather is with multiple wives and one of them is Esan, another is Owan and another is Idoma, I grew up hearing these languages. an etsako man in a discussion I had with him about Oyakhilome interpreted the name Oyakhilome at first instance, I was amazed which could mean Oyaghilowmen in Benin meaning suffer nor go use me again,
Na you nor know Benin history Ozolua spent substantial part of his life fending off attacks from Afemai areas, that is Why the Afemai regard him as their father today.
If you want excerpt I can show you where a guy from Okpe(urhobos) was shocked when someone from Esan spoke and he went to meet to inquire what part of Okpe he is from and was shocked
