I am an akwa ibomite though I am not a native. Akpabio worked in the state, Udom is also working. I am not a politician I can give a fair assessment and can confidently tell you that Akwa Ibom has been blessed with good leaders since the time of Attah who planned the state map, to Akpabio who built state of the art road to Udom who is doing his best to sustain the tempo...The Latest flyover he built is longer than the two Akpabio did in Itam.
I'm not against Akpabio but you know Akpabio fans always chatise Udom saying he isn't working. He is stingy etc

1. Did you agree with the president when he called Nigerians lazy? You sidestepped this question.

2. I think you are an important, honest part of the political/government discourse on NL.

3. You (and the World Bank) do not consider all taxes (and levies) that Nigerians actually face. Nigerians: the market seller, the bus driver, the school, etc; are paying 'taxes' up to 20% to 25% every day. These taxes (levies) are collected by groups like NURTW, Market Sellers Association, local 'paramount rulers', etc; with the full backing of the government.
I resent you saying we don't pay enough tax. Have you run a business in Nigeria?

4. Our electricity costs are not low right now. We pay more for electricity per kWH than parts of Canada. Bear in mind that we have less than 5% of the GDP per capita.

It's like someone earning N50,000 paying more per unit for water than someone earning N1,000,000 a month. (Topic for another day).

5. We currently have suppliers in Nigeria for automobile industry. At least for parts like glass and foam and plastics. I think Innoson even does the chassis here (may be wrong). All the suppliers have the same complaints: electricity is expensive, intermittent and they need their own power supply (further blocking capital and increasing operating costs).

Beancounter94:

That's not the type of small scale industry. I am talking of small scale industries that manufacture componets for cars like brakepads, keyholes, lightbulbs, etc etc.

Right not most of that has to be imported from abroad. That's part of the reason why cars made in Nigeria are expensive.

And even then, privatiztion does not work when the government is setting your prices. They did not do that for the GSM sector, and that is why we can have nice things there.

Plus I deeply and truly resent you calling me a government supporter. If we cannot face the reality of our contribution to the mess that is our power sector, as well as the fact that the sector suffers from years of not paying cost reflective tarrifs...even now only some customers pay cost reflective tarrifs, as well as many not paying a thing for the power we use...then we would never get power.

One thing that leaves me feeling very angry with Nigerians is the victim mentality. Suggest we are not paying enough for something and they call you a government supporter. Well, the thing is, even corruption aside, we are not earning enough revenue to pay for a first world level of life. Saying that does not mean I support this government.

Actually, we are not taxed enough (and yes, i ABSOLUTELY hate saying that, but it is the truth).

As per a BBC report

And our tax to gdp ratio is 6.1%, a figure so low, it attracted a UN agency warning report.

Well truth be told Akpabio is more generous in spending, but that is the state money that he is spending carelessly. Udom does not throw money around like Akpabio even his close Associates have said so. However, the question to ask is DOES GOING AROUND “Dashing” people money mean you are a better manager of resources? Honestly I still have not come to terms with the fact that Udom is stingy, it may be that he empowers people in other ways instead of giving physical money. Just trying to be objective here, Akpabio too is a man I respect notwithstanding.

True shall.
I remember back in 2017.. my uncle was just telling me how stingy Udom is that boys are hungry etc.
I was even thinking then the man wasn't working but when I look at it again I can now see the reasons why they didn't like him

That is good news for India as it expands its wealth onto more industries. The country is becoming very competitive in so many trades that I am very proud to say that we are now internationally competitive.
