Before Ahiara debacle, a priest from anywhere can be appointed Bishop of any diocese.

That’s why Anthony Okogie from Benin was made Archbishop of Lagos.

Onaiyekan, a Yoruba, was made Archbishop of Abuja.

But when Anambra man was made Bishop of Ahiara and Ahiara priests protested and said over their dead bodies, Vatican learned to be more careful with appointments of non-indigenes as Bishop of a diocese.

Trust me, if it wasn’t that Ahiara issue, an Anambra priest would possibly have been appointed Bishop of Abakaliki but the Pope wants to avoid the repeat of what happened in Ahiara.
