Contacts weren't in vogue when I'd needed help to see clearly. I almost always sat in the front rows in class, right up to the university. At my first job, I needed to have the glasses: the medical exam found I needed a pair; I'd known it for years. I've been using glasses since then. Like many here, contacts don't work for me; they were fantastic the first time I tried them: first time I'll be seeing clearly without aid in years, but what's the use when I can't figure how to get them out without incident?

It's a problem when engaging in sporting activities, especially contact sports: you look vulnerable, and you know your eyes are. At parties, I'd almost always wish I didn't use them; no matter how cool your specs are, you can't look normal and party-like. That's a brief specs-party verdict. But wearing a pair has a number of joys too ;-)

Don't know why the poster is so excited. I wish glasses only for the worst of my enemies. I'v been wearing medicated lenses for eleven years now and my sight has not improved one bit. Instead it has only gotten worse.
In my experience there's no such thing as "corrective" lenses
Re: Anyone For Glasses? by Nobody: 6:22am On Nov 01, 2011
I've been using my glasses for 3years now, I got my first pair 6years ago, but I refused to use it cos of my hatred for it cry cry. When my sight got worse (could not view or place distant writings especially human faces from afar), I knew the time had come.

I brought out my first glasses with wierd coloured lenses and old mama frame and I went to replace it wv a cute frame n lens colour at least to encourage me to use it more often

My sight hasn't been corrected so far, but I believe it would have if I had done the right thing earlier.

I envy those that don't use glasses wv sharper view dan my four eyes a lot and I wish I do have a perfect sight!

My glasses exp aint dat fun, started wearin like 20yrs ago and my eyes are just worse off. Dis days i just abandon it for like a yr n pick it up after(guess its my way of keepin sane). from u guys post its obvious d laser surgery cant be gotten in naija yet. Guess i still hv to wait some more.
I hv a quick q, hv any of u heard or know someone wit nyctalopia(nightblindness)? Does it hav any remedy or way to make livin wit it easy?
Re: Anyone For Glasses? by firestar(f): 8:56am On Nov 01, 2011
Already have and since I was 9. embarassed
I noticed wearing glasses makes one assume a 'serious' personality. Removing them, I hear people tell me I look so much different without them. Approachable even. tongue
Contacts? Wait till you enter an elevator. . . sad

I've heard of it. Mostly affects myopics. I was recommended in taking fruits and vegetables rich in Vitamin D.
But still, see your optician.

she's excited because she can see clearly now! all the colours n little details without getting headache
why are some people acting like it's a disease-  go for eye surgery if its should a big issue in your life

the word corrective is not meant to improve just adjust it, if your long sighted- you wear a lens that will make u comfortable reading nearer objects
if you short sighted the lens corrects the focus, its not meant to heal you; like some sort of medication- its an aid
Re: Anyone For Glasses? by JeSoul(f): 2:51pm On Nov 01, 2011
Hmm . . . it seems there are some misconceptions about wearing contacts.

No one is a 'pro' when they first start wearing them. It does take some getting used to placing it on your eyes. Yes your natural reflex will make you shy away from putting it on your eyes at first but trust me, within week or two, you will be just fine. After so many years I can practically put them on/take them off without even blinking.

Haribo:

I've been wearing glasses for the past 20 years. Yep!! 20 fricken years. I lived through being called 4 eyes and coke bottle eyes from a very young age. I have to admit it was hard sometimes  cry But I'm fine now. I still wear glasses and my vision still sucks, but at least now I wear glasses with cute frames and people think I look cool and smart in them (I AM cool and smart). Not to mention now that I'm all grown up I have strong arms and I can slap anyone that calls me four eyes! I dare anyone to try it  tongue

Oh, I have astigmatism in both eyes and I'm myopic (in the medical sense only). Sounds cool right? Not really.

I talked to my doctor last week about laser surgery and he said it's no guarantee that my eyes will get better in the future, so I dropped the issue for now. I'll keep researching it though. Maybe I'll get it done a few years from now.

I tried looking into contacts but I blink 500 times a second whenever anything gets close to my eyes. I can't even put in eye drops cos I blink so much. My doctor said I should just give up! I don't mind though. Contacts are a bit disgusting to me.
Hmm . . . I am not an optician, but I would like to challenge your doctor. Are you in Naija?

First of all, everybody's eyes gets worse as they age, that is standard. Your eyes do not "get better in the future" with laser surgery, it corrects your eyesight now - and over time it will lose 'power' just like everybody elses' due to the natural aging process. You must understand that many opticians/doctors will discourage or 'not encourage' patients to go for lasik because it will negatively affect them! their business. If you can afford it, and medically your eyes are up to it, it is the best option and cheapest in the long run.

And your doctor also asking you to 'give up' just because you were nervous about trying contacts for the first time?    who wasn't nervous the first time? It took me almost 20mins just to put one one the first time.
Re: Anyone For Glasses? by netotse(m): 4:40pm On Nov 01, 2011
lol. . .I no know say we plenty for this zones. . .lol

been using glasses for the past 17 years even technically I've only ever worn them half of that period  (I dey break fire grin )

I'm short sighted as well as astigmatic, the astigmatism is more of a problem though,

How I started? my elder sis got hers and I was jealous so I used to put my face in front of the TV, the rest is history. . . tongue

my current pair of glasses: the safety kind with shields on the handles (I work outdoors most of the time so I no get choice)

Would I try contacts: naaahhhhhh, not of fan of toying with my eyes. . .

had an annual medical test last week and the optometrist was of the opinion I need to get a stronger pair of glasses that guy is on a looooonnnnnggggg thing! (been wearing my current pair for  3 months after a 2 year break)
Re: Anyone For Glasses? by Oluchia(f): 5:12pm On Nov 01, 2011
Bn wearing mine for over 15 yrs now. Am shortsighted and also felt the initial excitment of seeing so clearly. But got tired of the damn thing over time. Forgot them in my parents home when i travelld last yr and never botherd getting a replacement. I know i still need them, but for now let me enjoy the freedom.

You are right, I had some misconceptions about lasik myself. I thought If I did it it would be a one step fix for my eyes forever and ever. But my doctor said there's no guarantee that my vision won't change as I grow older. I figure instead of getting the surgery done now and potentially still having my sight degenerate, I'd rather wait till I'm older and get it then. Not sure if it's the best option, but we'll see. Oh, and I'm not in Naija, if that means anything.

As for contacts, they just gross me out!

For those that are short-sighted, yet choose not to wear their glasses or corrective lenses, do you guys drive? And do you drive without your glasses? Because if you're short-sighted, you definitely shouldn't be behind the wheel of a car without 20/20 vision!

Definitely not! Cant imagine driving without my glasses. That will be a short cut to hell! When am ready to drive, i sure will go get a replacement.

True. Infact I think it is guaranteed that your vision will change as you get older - just like everyone else. The surgery is getting cheaper, more accessible and more sophisticated by the year. Before, the rehab time was weeks, now its just a day and the machines are def much better so there are def advantages to waiting. I asked about naija cos I've heard of some not so good advice docs have given patients and also if you can go online and check the reviews/reputation of the doc you're seeing for better confidence.

Lol. Common now sis, its not that bad. Try it and you'll never go back to regular glasses smiley

It also depends on how bad your eyes are. If its just a level or two, its okay for most people to drive.

Y are u people making contacts sound like plague? Av bin on contacts for 6yrs nw and believe me, its prolly the best thang that had happened to me, takes me less than 3mins to put them on n less than 30secs to get them off. T might be scary at first to use, bt with time u ll get used to it

It doesn't matter how bad your eyes are. If you're short-sighted, you'll need corrected vision to drive. If you have a smash, the police attending the scene will have noted you had no glasses. Once your insurance company gets this report, you can kiss good-bye to any sort of pay out. They'll void your claim, and cancel your policy. Worse case scenario, you could get prosecuted, and have your drivers license revoked, depending on the kind of accident. Like you ran a pedestrian down, and they were badly hurt (or killed).

Not necessarily. It's supposed to be on your driver's license that you have corrective lenses or glasses and that you need them for driving. It's not on mine, so I'm fine. Also, I'm not wearing my glasses in my driver's license photo. My eyes are not bad so I drive without them from time to time, as long as I'm not going to a new area. When I need to read signs, then yeah, I'll have them on.

You need to read signs all the time whilst driving, if its not on your license its on the police little tablet when they key in your name! all your details come up
Re: Anyone For Glasses? by Nobody: 4:10pm On Nov 03, 2011
I'm not talking of stop signs or traffic lights. I mean little neighborhood road signs as in "Abbey Drive" or something of that nature. I wear them so that I can read it from far rather than driving up to the sign and possibly passing it. I've passed the vision and driver's exams without my lenses. It's not on the police tablet and it's not with the Department of Motor Vehicles either for those reasons.

Re: Anyone For Glasses? by Nobody: 9:39pm On Nov 03, 2011
If you can pass the vision test without glasses, then you're fine. If you can't pass, then it will be marked on your license that you need glasses/lenses for driving for police to see if you're ever stopped.

This is the 21st century, and people are more active than ever. And regardless of whether you play beach volleyball, go for a day jog or ride a bike on the road, it is very important that you close your eyes from the sun ... and look stylish.

Magnetic sunglasses from Amycoz — are the future of active glasses. Our polycarbonate polarized lenses provide 100% UV protection. The full range of glasses can be viewed in our store.

Hi good evening. I just came across your thread: nice one. I'm having the same problem with my eyes. But I don't know how much the eye clinic charge for their eye test and buying the lenses. Pls can you suggest how much is the glasses?

The first day that I got mine and drove on the highway, I couldn't believe how clear I could read road signs and license tags! I felt like I was seeing things in super high definition. Everything just seemed so much brighter and clearer even things that I could see before the glasses. I guess I've been blind for a while thinking that it's normal!
Please, how much did you buy the glasses
