He was misquoted and hence, the popular use today.

This phrase is like an idiom, cliché or stereotype not necessarily true but we've accepted it as part of our words/view.

not advocating for prostitution, but do you know that some of these beggars have built houses, I mean storey building houses with proceeds from begging in their villages?
I was talking to a beggar who begs at a park. This man has been begging for many years. Even back then, when I was in the university, I'd see him go from bus to bus begging.
I was trying to encourage him to find something doing when he came to beg me. If you see the speed at which he left my side...
Neither begging, nor selling one's body is good, but the fact is that many of these beggars will beg till their dying days, no matter, how much they receive.
