You may remember Elvis Okafor. He went out to buy food for his sick mother in Orlu, Imo state, when he was accosted by security agents, accused of being IPOB/ESN, beaten and bundled to the Owerri, along with 20 other randomly arrested men. They were stripped to their underwear and made to take pictures with Biafran flags, arms and ammunition and drugs. The then Police Commissioner of Imo State, Abutu Yaro, gleefully paraded the innocent men as "ESN Operatives". Unfortunately for Abutu Yaro, relatives of the arrested men, including Elvis Okafor, raised the alarm on social media about how the men were framed, and this attracted the attention of mainstream media, including Punch Newspaper. As questions were raised about the legality of the men's arrest, Abutu Yaro was hurriedly transferred out of Imo State to protect him. Elvis Okafor has been released on Police bail and below is the report: The Imo State Police Command has released Elvis Okafor, the 23-year-old boy arrested in the Orlu Local Government of the state and labelled an operative of the Eastern Security Network. Okafor was reportedly released on Sunday, August 28, 2021. Our correspondent had reported that the victim left his house to buy foodstuffs in the market for his ailing mother when he was arrested alongside two other persons. PUNCH Metro also reported how Okafor was paraded by the state police command alongside 19 persons with different arms and ammunition displayed before them. His relative, Gideon Dominics, raised the alarm after seeing his photograph on Facebook while being paraded by the police. Dominics, in a post on Facebook, wrote, “This is my little cousin, Elvis Okafor; have you seen how dramatic Nigeria is? A little boy that went to buy foodstuffs for his sick mum is now a member of IPOB? “A boy that came back from church and hasn’t eaten anything is now brandishing a gun as an ESN member? You see the Nigerian magic? Is this how innocent people are being framed daily? While speaking with our correspondent on Monday, Dominic stated that his cousin had been released on bail. “If you see my cousin, you will not believe he is the person. After spending 29 days in a police cell, he was looking sick and in need of medical attention,” he added. Dominic stated that Okafor would not be able to speak immediately due to his condition. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mike Abattam, could not be reached as calls and a text message to his mobile phone were neither answered nor replied to https://punchng.com/after-punchs-reports-imo-police-free-man-labelled-ipob-operative/?amp |

Army wants bidexii and co. to work harder... ![]() Insecurity: Nigerian Army laments under-reporting of troops gallantry August 31, 2021 ...The Nigerian Army has expressed concern that most media houses in the country prefer to propagate sensitive reportage that scares and attracts negative attention rather than headlines geared towards celebrating the gallantry and efforts of its troops.. ...There is so much that the media can do in support of Nigerian Army operations across the country. For instance, the recent surrendering of Boko Haram insurgents and their humane reception by the Nigerian Army has been perceived negatively by the online community, and by extension Nigerians.... ....Therefore, it is necessary for the media bloggers/Online journalists to know and enlighten the populace on the dangers of misinformation or misrepresentation of same for the general security of our dear nation. Security is everybody’s business and we therefore acknowledge the fact that you all have very important roles to play in the promotion of peace and security in this country. It is very obvious that what you say, the way you say it and how it spreads have far reaching implications than most of us think, because the social media has a very crucial role to play in support of the Nigerian Army’s non-kinetic line of operations as well as shaping public opinion... https://www.nairaland.com/6734530/shiroro-local-hunters-kill-47 ...Hundreds Flee Armed bandits in their large numbers, on Friday night invaded Magami community in the Shiroro local government area of Niger state killing no fewer than 20 villagers in what source close to the community said was a reprisal attack by the gunmen. A number of the villagers are said to be missing after the night attack while several others fled to neighbouring communities for safety. It will be recalled that on Wednesday night, the men of the Special Security Task Force, comprising the Police, Local Hunters and Vigilante, launched an attack on the bandits, killing about 40 of them and recovered 16 motorcycles including arms and ammunitions mostly AK47 rifles. However a spokesman of the Concerned Shiroro Youths, Mallam Yusuf Abubakar Kukoki who confirmed the latest killings by the bandits to our correspondent on a telephone on Saturday morning, said the bandits came in their numbers, unleashing terror on members of the community in the night. According to him, “Realizing that the combined team of Police Special Force, Hunters and local Vigilantes who had earlier inflated heavy casualties on them had returned to their Base at Galadima Kogo, the bandits mobilized and returned like a pride of wounded lions killing people at sight. They murdered and butchered their victims with dangerous weapons. Unfortunately, the unarmed, peaceful and defenseless locals are now at the receiving end. “By a reliable records, no fewer than fifteen people have gruesomely been murdered by the marauding criminals. Six people were confirmed dead at Unguwan Magiro under Madaka Ward, Rafi local government area, four people at Farin Hula and five people at Magami and environs all under Manta Ward of Shiroro local government while scores of others are still missing – probably killed too” Kukoki said. The Kukoki stated further that many villagers have now fled to Kuta headquarters of the local government and other neighboring villages where they are now staying as Internally Displaced People. “Kuta the headquarters of Shiroro local government which is considered a safer ground is swelling up with fleeing IDPs who have since vacated the troubled areas scampering helter skelter for shelter, peace and security” Kukoki said in the statement. Kukoki suggested that the “Onslaught against criminals need to be a sustained one in order to avoid a replica of this nature” adding that: “sustained operation can go a long way in halting or avoiding any possible reprisal that could result into unwanted casualties”. The Concerned Shiroro Youths, he said is therefore calling with “a loud voice on the authorities concerned to immediately mobilize security personnel as well as local Vigilantes and station same at Magami which is now the epicenter of atrocities being perpetrated by dreaded criminals so as to restore security in the area”. This, according to him, will guarantee peace and enable the locals to continue with their lawful and legitimate activities. All efforts to get the reactions of the Chairman of the Local Government Council Alhaji Sulaiman Chikuba on phone was abortive as he did not pick up his cell phone despite several calls made to it A Government official who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the attacks on Kukoki, Bassa, Magami and Madaka villages saying “they attacked and kill many people but the number is yet to be ascertained”. Police Public Relations Officer Niger State Police Command DSP Wasiu Abiodun when contacted promised to get back to our correspondent but did not do so until the time of going to press. SOURCE |

On top of that, they allowed those criminals to escape, blame Western cops all day, but one thing i like them for, there is no way in hell they will allow such murderers to escape, especially in large numbers. They know the consequence of allowing that. These guys who escaped, will now come back later with vengeance and kill many people in those towns. dragon2: |

Two weeks isn't enough to deal with the crisis in the northwest Sha, I don't know how they are going to achieve something meaningful under two weeks. Unless they are going to be training and recruiting volunteers into vigilante groups that will continue pushing on the bandits after the military might have weakened them in these two weeks. It is believed that the Niger special vigilante corps(NSVC) trained and under the supervision of the police and the Niger state government are behind the recent killings of over 40 bandits in shiroro community of Niger state. In the neighboring state, the governor with the advice of his ex-bandits security advisers have banned vigilante groups for months now. Some of those advisers were recently caught involving in crimes. |

Whyem15:Two weeks is even too much. These guys have Camps they operate from. The only thing the military need is to attack those camps and make sure no one or weapon gets out. The rest of the work can be done by the police. |

KILLINGS: MAJOR HUMANITARIAN CRISIS LOOMS IN NORTH, AMNESTY WARNS. Amnesty International has warned that a major humanitarian crisis looms in Northern Nigeria with the increasing rate of killings. The organisation expressed concern over the rising killings, alleging that authorities have failed to protect the people. A statement from the organisation claimed that inability of authorities to bring attackers to justice fuelled “dangerous conspiracy theories that only escalate the violence.” The statement read, “A year ago, Amnesty International investigation shows that; the Nigerian authorities have left rural communities at the mercy of rampaging gunmen who have killed at least 1,126 people in the north of the country from January to August 2020. “The organization interviewed people in Kaduna, Katsina, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara states, who said they live in fear of attacks and abductions as insecurity escalates in urban and rural areas. “On 28 May 2020 at least 74 people were reportedly killed in Sokoto state, when gunmen attacked four villages in Sabon Birni Local Government Area. More people have been killed in other local governments, including Isa LGA. "According to witnesses interviewed by Amnesty International in Kaduna, Zamfara, Plateau and Katsina states, the attacks are well coordinated. Attackers stormed villages on motorcycles and heavily armed. They shoot sporadically at people, set houses on fire, steal cattle, destroy farm produce and abduct villagers for ransom. “The violence has forced many farmers and their families to flee their homes. Last year, Katsina state government said that, at least 33,130 people are now in displacement camps, and others have gone to stay with relatives in urban areas. Thousands of farmers could not cultivate their farms during the 2020 and the current rainy season because of fear of attacks or abduction. This poses a threat to food security and livelihood. “This is pushing the northern region to the brink of a major humanitarian crisis. The Nigerian authorities’ failure to stem the violence is costing people’s lives and livelihoods, and without immediate action many more lives may be lost. “Spate of these killings is an evidence of failure of authorities to protect the people. Inability of authorities to bring attackers to justice is fueling dangerous conspiracy theories that only escalate the violence. “Amnesty International is calling on Nigerian authorities to independently investigate all these deaths and ensure accountability by bringing the perpetrators to justice.” Source: https://punchng.com/killings-major-humanitarian-crisis-looms-in-north-amnesty-warns/ |

Adamawa Government has announced the closure of 30 boarding junior secondary schools in the state out of the 34 junior schools over insecurity. The closure, according to a statement by the commissioner of education and human capital development, Mrs. Wilbina Jackson, is to take effect from September 6, 2021 till further notice. The statement seen by our reporter said the move was a proactive measure to ensure the safety of students in view of the insecurity bedevilling the country. The State government’s action came amidst escalating banditry in the country, resulting in the kidnap of hundreds of school children across many states. The four schools that will not be affected by the closure are the Government Girls Junior Secondary School, Yola; General Murtala Mohammed College, Yola; Special School Jada; and Special School, Mubi. “The Hon. Commissioner Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, wishes to announce that 30 boarding junior secondary schools out of the 34 schools in the state, have been de-boarded with effect from 6th September, 2021. From now henceforth, all the 30 government junior secondary schools are now day schools. ”The remaining four that are not affected are Government Girls Junior Secondary School Yola, General Murtala Mohammed College Yola, Special School Jada and Special School Mubi. “This becomes necessary due to the present incessant security challenges faced by the country and owing to students’ tender age, hence the need for them to study under the care of their parents. ”All students from the affected schools are to be placed in the nearest public junior secondary schools within their catchment or domicile areas. Stakeholders, PTA, ANCOPS and others are to ensure compliance with this government policy,” the statement said. https://punchng.com/breaking-adamawa-orders-closure-of-30-boarding-schools-over-insecurity/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&&utm_medium=Social&utm_source=Twitter&__twitter_impression=true |

Heavy gunfire was heard near the presidential palace in Guinea's capital Conakry on Sunday morning, while convoys of armoured vehicles and trucks carrying soldiers patrolled the streets, a Reuters witness said and videos shared on social media showed. A military source said the only bridge connecting the mainland to the Kaloum neighbourhood, which houses most of the ministries and the presidential palace, had been sealed off and many soldiers, some heavily armed, were posted around the palace. A senior government official said President Alpha Conde was unharmed but gave no further details. A witness told Reuters he saw a civilian with gunshot wounds. Footage shared on social media, which Reuters was not immediately able to verify, showed heavy gunfire ringing out over the city, and vehicles full of soldiers approaching the central bank, close to the palace. A Reuters reporter saw two convoys of armoured vehicles and pick-up trucks heading towards Conakry Autonomous Port, also near the palace. The convoy was accompanied by a white vehicle that appeared to be an ambulance. Guinea has witnessed sustained economic growth during Conde's decade in power thanks to its bauxite, iron ore, gold and diamond wealth, but few of its citizens have seen the benefits. In October the 83-year-old won a third term in office in an election marked by violent protests in which dozens of people were killed. How true? |
