The Kogi State government has said it will not involve itself in the pursuit to retain the Value Added Tax as embarked on by the governments of Lagos and Rivers.

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, had signed a bill on VAT followed by an order requiring businesses to henceforth pay VAT to the state and not to the Federal Inland Revenue Service.

He announced that the payment of VAT to the state will commence this September.

This was after a judgment by a federal high court in Port Harcourt restrained the FIRS from collecting VAT in the state.

The Lagos State government, in line with the judgment, also passed a VAT bill and asked the FIRS to stop collecting VAT from businesses in the state.

The move by both states was opposed by Kogi State through the Commissioner of Information, Kingsley Fanwo, in an interview with Arise TV on Friday.

He said, “We are not created equally, and God that created us did not give us equal potential, and we have to support one another.”

Speaking further, Fanwo said, “This call shows that some of our leaders are insensitive, self-centred and trying to make policies that will further divide the country.

“Kogi is bordered by about 10 states of the federation and a gateway to the north, south, to everywhere. And you know that thousands of vehicles transverse the state on a daily basis. It’s the mineral capital of Nigeria. When you look at our advantages, we should even be at the forefront of fighting for VAT to be completely retained in the state.”

He continued, “When you look at the development of the South-West in those days — the cocoa house — and the groundnut pyramids in the north, the whole of Nigeria is reaping the benefit till today. And what we need to do at this material time as leaders is to stop thinking about ourselves alone.

“The position of governor Yahaya Bello on this is very clear: we will not jump on that bandwagon to call for the retention of VAT completely in the state. We are not created equally, and God that created us did not give us equal potentials, and we have to support one another.”

Supporting this VAT matter will block the chances of Yeye Bello hiding free money that's supposed to be used for the state in private accounts. He'll be stupid to support the move cool

cool

Yeye Bello and his Fulani asslicking for imaginary 2023

If foolish Yeye Bello can't be bold like Matawale of Zamfara and tell Federal Government Kogi State wants to mine it's solid minerals and sell it to FG or pay tax, Kogi would be one of the richest state in West Africa

If Kogi State can collaborate with Dangote cement to build a super highway which they would toll like Lekki toll gate, Kogi would make billions daily from close proximity to Abuja

Lol... What do you expect from a parasite state that generates less than 800 miliion naira every month but gets 1.3 billion naira free of charge to do?
Nigerians just watch how these Parasites would seriously fight back. Rivers and Lagos should be prepared ooh... Else Nothing would come out of it.

If Kogi state can not foot its bills, then FG should collapse Kogi state into Edo state.

The North created 19 parasites states to milk the south dry and to maintain majority status against the south with just 17 viable states.

Dear Yoruba , IBO and Niger Delta please and please southern unity is the only solution.

He said, “We are not created equally, and God that created us did not give us equal potential, and we have to support one another.”

Lol certain states need not exist. They should simply merge with states that are more fiscally responsible if they can't manage themselves. All this whining is not about the laws Constitutionality of law. Institute a sales tax or something you can't earn enough vat. God didn't tell you to have a bloated work force and bad business climate.

Politicians.

Exactly the reason this country is in a mess. We need solid professionals in politics and not professional politicians.

Your state is the mineral capital, yet your citizens wallow in abject poverty. We should not bother about such a response as the man wants to become the president. Turning a very serious economic matter into a political issue is nothing short of a disgrace.

Hopefully he will not secretly move to enjoy the benefits of the VAT successes of Rivers and Lagos states.

The sectors that will contribute most to the GDP and create the most jobs and wealth to the Nigerian economy in the next 20, 30, 50 and 100 years are manufacturing, agriculture/food processing, construction/real estate, financial services. Tech won't be in the top 60 to 70%.

I took my time to study the dynamics of our socio-economic construct. Tech will remain what it is. An enabler. Much of the legacy systems and platforms have already been built. The United States leads the pack in the technology economy. Specifically Software, Internet and Media. Followed closely by China, who also leads the pack in hardware technology. The wealth creation indices speaks to their technological foundation. India has done well with developing human resource to service the top developed tech economies and ecosystems.

America is the only country where the wealthiest are from the tech industry (software, internet, media and hardware).
In China, according to the top 30 wealthiest ranking of 2021, only 33% are from tech. The remaining 66% are from Food, Pharmaceuticals, real estate, manufacturing.
Europe's biggest companies are in the fashion industry. They play big in infrastructure, automobile, retail, beverage and snacks. The biggest tech export out of Europe is SAP. A company that started in the 70s.
In India, the wealth of the richest comes from Pharmaceuticals (Drug and Vaccine manufacturing), Banking, Manufacturing (Cement and metal), Retail, Telecoms, Manufacturing, financial services and tech. Of course, tech is represented by HCL, which is one of the largest software services exporters in the world with presence I. Over 45 countries.

The sizes of wealth created by each industries is one of the easiest pointers to where the most economic opportunities can be developed.
Africa will miss it if it gets fixated and obsessed with technology to the detriment of the sizes of opportunities that other sectors represents, especially their relevance to our unique socio-economic construct.
We should pay more attention to areas of advantages that hold true economic potentials to create wealth and jobs beyond the hype.
