We’ll Await Supreme Court Decision – Benue Governor Supports Wike, Sanwo-Olu On Value-Added Tax

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has shown his support for his counterparts in Lagos and Rivers states amid moves to make the collection of value-added tax (VAT) exclusive to states.

The governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, signed into law the bill on Value Added Tax (VAT) collection in the state.

This was days after a Federal High Court issued an order restraining the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) from collecting the tax in the state.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos governor, followed suit on Friday.

However, the court of appeal in Abuja ordered both Rivers and Lagos states to maintain status quo over the collection of VAT, pending the determination of an appeal filed by the FIRS.

Ortom, who spoke with journalists on Friday, said although he supports Wike and Sanwo-Olu, he would embrace the decision of the court on VAT collection no matter the outcome.

Ortom said he had already directed the Benue State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to study the law and tell him its implications.

“I don’t think there is anything wrong in embracing the law as long as it conforms with the constitution, whether it affects states positively or negatively. I support the governors of Rivers and Lagos states for what they are doing.

“Anything that is in tandem with the rule of law I will accept, but if anyone thinks otherwise, the best thing to do is to go to court. I heard they are in court, and if the case is decided otherwise by the Supreme Court, we will accept it,” the governor said.

I want to know the legal abracadabra the court will pull on this matter because the constitution clearly supports the States. The FIRS already shot itself by writing to the National Assembly for urgent constitutional amendment, so why are they appealing

Ortom is the Wike we have in the Middle belt. How could Kano state generate 2.8billion in June and they gave it back to them in July? So Rivers state should be given back the 15b they generated in June.

Kano can never be 5% and Rivers 6%, it's impossible. Wike complained Kano generated 2.8bn from VAT and where given 2.8bn, while Rivers generated 15.6bn but were given only 4bn so how does that translates to 6&5 %s respectively?.

Many don't know the manufacturing and commercial prowess of Kano State. Many don't know Kano State is a major market for neighboring countries to get what they want.

This man own the funny me o. Benue that its IGR is fourth to the last in the 36 states of the federation. I wish he kept mute for now. Even though the ideal isn't bad. For now, he should be calm, concentrate and think of how to pay the months load of pensions and salaries owed instead of chasing clout. Even Minimum wage him no fit pay.

Benue has a river and yet you hardly find running water in the state capital. Potholes everywhere in the state capital, no functioning industries apart from his. Land purchasing is his order of the day.

This will make States more conscious of who to vote in next time as Governors as it will no longer be about spending monthly allocation from the FG but how innovative one is in generating wealth opportunities for the State and increase their IGR.

With enough land to go into agriculture on large scale, why has the core northern states not done so over the decades rather making tens of thousands of their people become bandits going by Sheik Gumi's figures?

You have so much landmass, why not engage it productively and have your cattles reared there and exported to other parts of Nigeria in trucks to those who are willing to pay your selling price rather than having your herdsmen roaming with the herds causing havoc in the South who have smaller landmass compared to the North?

Don't cry for the igbos, they will never end up on the streets of Sokoto, Kano, Kastina or Zamfara begging for alms with their families no matter how they will be taxed mercilessly.
