An environmental consultant, social critic, activist and advocate for good governance in Nigeria, Ebikapade Amasuomo, shared his opinion with Whistle Times on the agitation by a section of Igbos to secede from Nigeria. The activist said, ”During the Biafra War, the Nigerian government confiscated bank accounts belonging to Igbos.

After the war in 1970, the Nigerian government gave every Igbo person with a bank account the sum of twenty pounds as a grant to start a new life, therefore, the Igbos lost funds in Nigerian banks in return for a twenty pounds grant. In the same vein, Igbos who had properties in other parts of the country had their properties seized especially in Rivers State where thousands of Igbo properties in Port Harcourt were auctioned off to locals due to perceived dominance of Igbos in Port Harcourt.

Apart from financial and property losses, several Igbos were killed, many young people with potentials lost their lives. Some of the young people killed could have gone on to be great men and women. Despite all these losses, Igbos are a formidable force in today’s Nigeria. They are one of the top two most prosperous tribes in Nigeria with almost every two villages producing at least one or two millionaires.

Ebikapade Amasuomo added that outside Nigeria, out of every ten Nigerians making the country proud, an investigation will always reveal that four out of the ten are Igbos while another four will be Yoruba and the remaining two from various parts of the country. In Nigeria today, some of the biggest banks are owned by Igbos, they are prominent in the nation’s entertainment industry, sports, academics, aviation sector, small and large scale manufacturing, media and a host of others. Their role in commerce and the informal sector across the country cannot be overemphasized.

The Igbos essentially rebuilt a nation with a grant of twenty pounds each. This shows the resilient nature of Indigbos, one wonders what could have become of the Igbos had Biafra not happened. Igbos live peacefully in every parts of Nigeria plying their trade and making money under extremely difficult circumstances.

The advocate for good governance further added that as an Ijaw man watching events in Nigeria, he believes that what Nigeria needs to survive is Indigbos and not crude oil. He said, the Igbos do not have crude oil nor political powers but they are more prosperous than those with political power and crude oil. Ebikapade said, what we must do now as a nation is to support and encourage Igbos so as to accelerate our quest of becoming the next China. Biafra and Igbo exit from Nigeria will be an irrevocable loss to Nigeria, therefore, we must begin the process of ensuring that the likes of Peter Obi, Kingsley Moghalu, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and thousands of brilliant Igbo technocrats out there are given a chance at the national level come 2023 general election. I do not know these individuals personally but without a doubt they have proven themselves as worthy leaders in their private and public endeavors.

We must therefore not push the Igbos to the wall as their exit from this nation will be a costly mistake for hundred of years to come.

Our relevance is there but not appreciated
I hate when my some of my fellow igbos fall prey to wailing and replying those nuisance that have nothing to do but carry igbo matter for their head

I respect and appreciate other tribes; they too are great and relevant .
What I can't support is us being one country because it technically slows development and actually draws us backward
For instance look at our naira, the dollar policy, the insecurities and unfavorable treatment of igbos and Nigerian youths

I advocate for regional or confederal system.
Let their be Competition and mutual respect & appreciation for each other

Igbos are more in love with the Akwa Ibom and the Efiks than Naija dear.
There is a conflict of ideas when it comes to Naija, we have the Islamic agenda and the Igbo agenda of a free state.

These two cannot work together if they are at loggerheads. When two idealogies can't coexist or has never coexisted together peacefully like what we have in Ethiopia, it would be hard.

Imagine Nigeria being free of religion, like really secular and people can be who they want to be without judgement. There'll be remarkable development.

Briton and most conservative European countries found this early enough that they executed their ideas from their philosophers of their time.

Most of the Migrants to the Americas has or used the same idealogies, for example, the pilgrims and all, they were trying to escape conservative Europe and more. It happens the world over.

No human can exist or be happy where is his or her are bound like a chicken in a cage.

The yearly average salary of igbos before the war was less than £15 a year, stats also show that they had fewer bank account as compared to other southerners. The biggest losers will be igbos if they leave Nigeria, that's why I support them leaving.

Igbos are smart, industrious, creative, hard-working, and most importantly very intelligent.
Igbos cannot maximize their full potentials in this contraption called Nigeria.
Igbos will only function fully in a system where equity, justice & merit Is the other of the day.
Every ethnic group have what they are blessed with I.e comparative advantage. Nigeria is where it is today because fulanis who have no business in managing the affairs of a country are at the helm of affairs, a case of square pegs in round holes.
Unless igbos and Yorubas decide to put away their political differences and come together with one voice, this country will continue to lag behind.

Nope, what he's trying to say in essence is that Igbos don't need crude oil to survive and be great.
Unlike other oil states that depend on oil money, Igbos don't, they are everywhere in the world in search of greener pastures and business opportunities. That's the uniqueness of the Igbos from other tribes.

Every fvckin day you guys are all around the place wagging your little dvcks around looking for who to measure it with and rub it for them, rub it for them and become a friend, stop rubbing it and you become an instant enemy like reno. In every tribe they are political sellouts, so those judases you mentioned above abounds in other ethnic groups.
For your info, we don't need a fulani to tell us about ourselves, Igbos know who they are and what they can accomplish given a level playing field.

Before responding to this appealing write up, let me first correct the wrong statement in bold.
Igboland is emphatically the richest in onshore crude oil in Nigeria. Igboland has over 15 oil producing LGAs cumulatively in Nigeria from Rivers, Delta, Abia, Imo and Anambra states. No ethnic group can beat that. Therefore, let no man ever make the comment that Igbos have no oil.
Now to the write up itself, the writer did his best but the truth is that Igbo youths have decided already on a separate future for Igbos from Nigeria. Nigeria has no good plans or future for us so why should we waste time believing in something that is designed to suppress us? It's just common sense that we shun Nigeria entirely and focus on building a separate existence. Our minds are made up already. There's no going back on Biafra.

LoL young man, how can a whole Opobo & Bonny that were actively trading Igbo slaves be Igbo? Those people are Ijaw people that speak what we call, Igbani (Ijaw language & Igbo as second language due to the heavy trading of Igbo slaves and marriage) Opobo and Bonny were heavily involved in taking Igbo slaves in those days, many Igbo women were married forcefully to produce children. Remember Jaja of Opobo, an Igbo man that was taken to Opobo as a slave. Yes a few Igbo states have oil in small quantity, Imo & Anambra.
