Over 60% Of Lagos VAT Is From Sea Port by atorioke(m): 11:32am On Sep 13, 2021 |
STILL ON VAT: Figures now being reeled out shows that more than 60% of VAT being generated from Lagos State is from the sea ports; can you beat that? This simply means that Lagos state sits on our common patrimony and has an undue favouritism to develop at the expense of other port cities like Warri for no just cause. I submit that we cannot be talking of true federalism, justice and unity when some part of the country is overtly being oppressed to the economic advantage of another favoured part. Restructuring should not be only about the north vs south diatribe, it must also include as of necessity any south-on-south economic violence. I dare to say that the conversation on VAT cannot be effectively discussed without the discussion of opening all the other ports in Nigeria, particularly the Warri port for business. As the 1 million man march of Abacha led to the agitation for resource control then, so also must this VAT issue lead to the agitation for opening the eastern ports for business. The city of Warri has been subjected to unwarranted economic strangulation; it can't breathe because it has a fellow southern brotherly knee on her neck! If this is not economic banditry, what is it? tollyboy5: There are sea ports in South South but FG is subjugating them for that of Lagos to strive. If the issue of state collecting VAT scale through, Lagos State will feel the heat. It is a fish hook for them. It will lead to total revamping of the ports in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta and even oil companies being directed to take their headquarters to the Niger Delta region. True federalism will kill Lagos State to an extent but Lagos is not seeing it from that angle. By the way, I'm from Delta, Nigeria. We have the third best IGR, and most times, highest FAAC allocation 9 Likes 1 Share |

theTranscriber:Lagos is planning on a bigger port in badagry, the road construction to badagry is ten lane with a blue line rail. Nobody is favoring Lagos. Lagos favored herself by improving fedral road that has capital impact on her economy. Stop the jealousy bro 31 Likes 1 Share |

theTranscriber: Lagos state is not more central. Rivers for example is more closer to Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers and all South Eastern state than Lagos. Warri (Delta) is more closer to Ondo, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross Rivers, South Eastern States, Kogi and Benue than Lagos. And for the Northern part that is far from Warri, there is a railway from Warri to Itakpe in Kogi that can move goods in safer way to Northern States than Lagos. First map is to tell you that Warri or Rivers or Akwa Ibom is closer to South South States and South East States than Lagos. The second picture is to tell you that Warri-Itakpe way is more convenient way to move goods to the North. Remember, rail from Lagos end in Ibadan. 1 Like 2 Shares

VAT from FG/Customs is different from VAT from Lagos State. FG Contributes half of the VAT from imports/foreign transaction/service States Contributes half, which Lagos contribute over 70% Op be educated accordingly 13 Likes 2 Shares |

theTranscriber: Who told u that? Please be dully guided before making comments. Calabar sea port is closer to northern and south eastern states than Lagos. If that sea port commences operation fully, trust me a lot of activities will be redirected from Lagos. Even Maesk shipping line prefers to be using calabar instead of Lagos ports. 2 Likes |

atorioke: How is politics making it thrive more than other ports? If roughly about 60% of all industries in Nigeria are located in Lagos/Ogun axis, where do you think they will import or export their products from? Besides, Lagos has like 100 years head start over other ports in Nigeria, tell me how politics had anything to do with that. 9 Likes |

theInterpreter: Sometimes you people make me laugh. Trade. How do you measure trade? Are there no trading activities in Northern Nigeria? Trading activities are measured by IGR to a very large extent. There are more trading activities in Lagos, Rivers and Delta than any other place in Nigeria. We are talking about buying and consuming power here. Goods are bought and consumed in these three places than other states in Nigeria. 1 Like |

For your information, if you think companies being in your place gives your state money, you are on a long thing because it is the federal government that collects company income tax and not state government. It is the personal ncome tax of these workers that your state collects. And we know that not of the staff are paid peanut. I'm a lawyer and an ICAN(skill) level candidate.
