You can see one of the reasons its mentally unhealthy to engage people like this in any intellectual discourse. Every one on earth knows that death is a characteristic of all living things. No one actually thinks he will escape death at one point or the other. But a person like this who has not even appreciated the reality he sees everyday, will want to engage you in a religious debate. Yet he has never seen anyone who lived beyond 150 years in some cases. And he knows that as time counts, we are all gradually leaving this duniya for the life of the hearafter. Or maybe he doesn't really know. Maybe he thinks all the people he knows who have left this world are somewhere in America continuing their lives.

Please let's be learning to turn away from them. In surah Furqan chapter 63 where Allah was describing the qualities of the righteous slaves,

He said "wa ibadul rahmani ledzhina yemshuna alal ardi haonan, wa iza khotorbahumul jahiluna korlu salaman"

Meaning-: And the righteous slaves of the most Gracious (Allah) are those who walk on the earth surface with humbleness. And when they are addressed by the ignorant (foolish) people, they reply with salam(meaning peace)

Mind you brothers, the problem here is not the answers to his questions. The questions he asked could be answered intellectually if he had asked them with some sense of decorum and self respect. But he already presented himself as an unintelligible person who should not be engaged in any discussion. It is better to reply his kind with peace and move away quickly to avoid any further mental breakdown on his part.

Let me describe a little who the quraish were.
In almost all the verses you see in the Quran referring to war or fight or kill, the people in question were the quraish.

They were an Arab tribe who were rich because their town (Makkah) was a tourist centre for idolatry. People used to come from all places to buy idols and worship there.

So the chieves of that town knew that the message brought by Rosullulah( saw) was capable of reducing or stopping that commerce because it was against idol worshipping, and it was elevating the poor in status because it preached justice and equality before Allah.

they had a serious problem with him. Not that they had any doubt about the content of what he was saying. Their problem was of pride(of their tribes and wealth)

Many of them argued that if God was to send them a prophet, why did He not send them someone from the either of the two biggest towns in Arabia. (Makkah or Taif)

Others argued that why did He send someone that eats and walks about like a human, and not someone with gold flying from a place to the other like an angel. Their disbelief in him was for economic and egocentric reasons. Not that they were not familiar with the content of his message. They were close to Abyssinia the land of the Arabian Christians. They knew very well that idol worshipping was not the right thing.


HIS MESSAGE:

The basic message brought by the Rosullullah(saw) was that people should abandon the idols, be just, treat the orphans and poor with kindness, do not burry their females children (as this was the reaction of some Arabians when their wives gave birth to female children instead of male that they took pride in. Some of them out of regret would burry her alive), be dutiful to the parents.
All the messages he preached were what you and I would call a sane persons way of life.


JIHAD

When the Quraish saw that his message was gaining traction among the weak and poor Arabians, they decided to start chastising them. They were beaten and driven away from their homes until they went to Abyssinia the land of the Christians who heard their story and accommodated them. They had believed the message of peace brought by the prophet also included that they had no right to fight back their oppressors.
That was the reason for the verses that permitted them to fight back.

All the verses make it clear that the people they were fighting were of these characteristics

1. People who fought them. ( not people who were merely practicing other religion
2. If the people stopped fighting them, then the Muslims had no reason to fight.

In the third picture you would clearly see where it says jihad is for the weak women and children who are crying against oppression.

In the last picture, you will see where it is clearly stated that those who do not fight Muslims are not included in this category of people who are enemies of Islam. It is only those who drive you out of your homes or attack you that you should defend yourself from. The Quran is filled with so many verses that offer these clarity. But you know the reality of humans. Even people who cannot read will try to interpret it to fit their agenda.

Just like the scenes of Christianity where you find pastors doing ridiculous things on the TV. Like feeding members with detergents, and all of that. We all know that is not Christianity. The Catholics are practicing what Christianity used to be. All of those shows and funny statements by a pastor like odumegwu or whatever his name is, is a far cry from what Christianity is. We also have people who turn Islam upside down for their own purposes. That is the problem. The crises in jos for instance was originally a land tussle. It degenerated to religion. Islam means peace. So how can a religion that says you should turn away from the foolish by telling him salam, permit you to kill people who did not attack you. It is a far cry from what Islam is.

Muslims are told not to drink or fornicate, yet many do, it shows that the doings of Muslims does not necessarily portray what their religion demands of them. They could be passing a wrong message and people will think Islam instructed them to do these things.

Islam stands for justice. The Rosullulah (saw) said in a well known hadith "He is not one of us (Muslims) he who is unkind to his neighbours." Whether the neighbors are Muslims or not, we are to care for them and do not let them starve of hunger while we eat.

There are so many hadith and verses of the Quran that explain Islam. It becomes unnecessary what the king of Saudi Arabia is doing today, to use as a criteria for judging what Islam demands of him. He will be accountable for his actions. So if he led by the right Islamic rulings, Allah alone can reward him. But if he mixed what he knew to be Islamic with what his personal inclinations dictated of him, he will be accountable before Allah.

Khassogi was killed by Saudi Arabians. Do we say because the Quran was revealed in their place, then it means everything they are doing is Islamic? No! They could be doing things that are unislamic. But people will refer to their actions as explanations for Islam and not for their decisions.

So if anyone in a position to take decisions, decide to kill people unjustly and call it jihad, it doesn't make them free from Allah's grasp just because they called it jihad. Allah knows what He instructed concerning jihad. Acting out of it, is on the persons account.

If boko haram decide to catch a pregnant non Muslim and kill her, they will answer Allah on the day of Standing. They will not deceive Allah who knows what He had instructed concerning jihad.

We see the ridiculous atrocities done by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Where do they find references for those extremity? They are accountable before Allah for any life taken or injustice done.

We are only humans trying to live our lives within the ambits of the Islamic jurisprudence. We commit sins, we stray, we mix events up with our personal inclinations. People in politics are forced by circumstances to do things outside the command of their religion. There are rich Muslims who celebrate with alcohol because they cannot say no to their friends. There are rulers who command killings of political rivals while in politics. There are influential people who will not allow the almajiri system to end because of the worldly benefits they gain from it. There are those who will tell you jihad means killing non muslims just because they want to take possesion of their lands or exert powers on others.

Our deeds are diverse. In all, Allah is able to judge. The judgement cannot be escaped by any just because he called evil with a good name. If what he did was killing, he will get the recompense for killing.

Any one who strives hard against something that is difficult is said to be doing an act of jihad.

The greatest jihad is called jihad al nafs. That means striving against ones own soul.

When you are alone in the company of a beautiful woman who is naked. That striving you do internally to overcome the inclinations of your innerself is jihad.

When a man is sick, the striving he does to get better is called jihad

When you are not rich and give others in alms. That striving against your inner desires to withhold wealth despite the fear of poverty is jihad

When you see anyone robbing and raping a lady, if you strive to save her despite the fear of being killed is jihad

When you are attacked in your home by robbers, if you strive hard to repel them, its jihad.

The message is to encourage people not to relent in anything they are doing or passing through in life. The consolation is that whoever dies while striving will be granted paradise easily.

Most Christians are only familiar with the jihad againstban enemy that attacks the Muslims and they are encouraged to strive or struggle against them. They are not aware that jihad and the promise of paradise is for all aspects or types of jihad.

Anyone who dies by drowning is said to have died from jihad. He dies struggling to save himself. He is a martyr

Anyone who does from a stomach pain died striving.

Quran 4-135 tells Muslims to uphold justice even if it against their own selves or their fathers or sons. It does not discriminate between the rights if a Muslim and a disbeliever. You cannot cheat a disbeliever to please your father in Islam. Allah is a watcher if all you do.

If your neighbour is not happy living with you. You are encouraged to check yourself. Rosullulah(saw) said " he is not one of us (Muslim) anyone who discomforts his neighbours or does not care about them" whether Muslims or Christians, your neighbour in Islam is described as anyone who lives fourty houses to your left, right front and back.

Moreover, converting people is considered precious in all religions.

Your points and explanations are very valid. I totally understand all the angles you highlighted. Many parts of the Bible have been turned upside by Christian sects and denominations too. It's just that the one turned upside down in Islam relates to fighting and achieving victory in a fight (which directly means killing). I understand the main meaning of those parts in the Quran from your explanations.

People turn things upside down in every religion. The Cele worshippers go around barefooted because it happened in the Bible between Moses and God in a location. Moses was asked by God to off his shoes there because God's presence there makes the place holy. But the Cele worshipper may tell you that God is everywhere on earth here too making everywhere holy for them to go around barefooted too. And besides, it is God's earth. Other Christians frown at Catholics bowing down to images because it is condemned in God's 10 commandments.

Also, the church and pastors are involved in a lot of wrong things. But in all these, there are good people following the doctrines of Christianity and Islam as God wants it. There are good Pastors and Imams teaching and following the correct ways of God. We should not condemn or find fault in each other's religion. That will lead to intolerance. Every man will face judgment with God per head.

Thank you. First I will like to commend your diplomacy, and civility again in the method you enquire about things, and your good sense of decorum. Its not everyday we come across people who have such dexterity in holding peaceful dialogs. Even I have thanked and commended you before, I feel I have not done enough in this regard, so permit me to extend appreciations again in clearer terms.

Secondly, I will answer these questions so they are not too long. I have followed a method of supporting my claims with direct quotes from the holy Qur'an. And since there have never been two Qur'ans in the history of Islam, you will see just how badly the media has distorted the message and how ignorant Muslims have helped to portray a contradictory perspective of the religion that is actually after peaceful coexistence and justice.

Before I proceed, I want to state that the Arabic language is the language the Quran was revealed. There are many northerners who only memorise it and do not know the meaning. This has been the bane of Islam in the north. The level of illiteracy is higher so it is easy to see where the inability of people to read and research by themselves is an occasion that places too much authority and responsibility on "mallams" to interpret things to them. Unfortunately, some of these mallams and teachers are politically motivated and are capable of misinforming the almajiris so as to keep them subservient and useful tools for executing political schemes up north. It is obvious that people like me and other educated Muslims cannot be told to implement any atrocity in the name if Islam when it is clear that our religion is against injustice and pro peace.

I used the north as an example not because I have anything against northerners but because its the most peculiar place for the religious wars in Nigeria, this is not to dismiss any possibility that there are southern Muslims who put Islam to bad use too by their conduct or utterances.

So I will introduce to you clear terms and ask you honest questions first before I explain further. Everything I say is researchable and verifiable on google so you know I'm not trying to bamboozle you into any ideology

The word christian in Arabic is called Nasara. It means helpers in English. It is used interchangeably with the word ahl kitaab. Meaning people of the book.

The word yahood means Jews

The word mushrikin means polytheist.

The term kafir and mushrikin are used interchangeably when referring to the disbelievers who are armed against Muslims. Not the ones going about their business.

In this background I will state briefly that the Qur'an was not revealed as an entire book all at once. It was revealed over a period of 23 years. And verses and chapters were revealed as the matters arose.

So you see some verses in the Qur'an that if you know the tafseer(narration of event), it explains more clearly what the verses is referring to than what it would seem to someone who reads it with a different context.

This brings us to the harshest verses of the Qur'an. It is Quran chapter 9 verses 1-13.



THE BACKGROUND

Rosullulah (saw) was now the leader in Medina. The city comprised of Jews Muslims and Christians. They had entered a peace treaty and signed agreement that there should be no fight or wars for a period of ten years. This is the known as the treaty of hudaibiyyah.

The polytheist (idolators) who strove to expel the Muslims launched an attack and killed Muslims inside this treaty. When the Muslims were attacked, Rosullulah (saw) was of the opinion that Islam forbids him from fighting back because of how we treat covenants in islam. It was unclear to the Muslims if they are permitted to fight back when they had taken oaths of peace. Reneging on a promise is a great sin in islam, so this kept the Muslims confused

Then the verses were revealed. It admonished Muslims that they are absolved of all their responsibilities and bond by the oaths they took. They are allowed to retaliate the attack. But on these conditions

1. They should wait for a period of four months to give room for the polytheists to change and repent from their ways
2.They were not to attack anyone who did not attack them or participate in carrying out the killings
3. They were to accept the repentance and forgiveness of those who attacked if they repented. They were to keep their oaths with those who never broke the covenants in the first instance and remain true to them
4. They were to give protection to those who submitted or asked for protection and promised to change.

I want you to read the verses 1 to 13 as a whole first after knowing this story. Then after that, read only verse 5 as if you didn't know this story. You will see the difference in impression you would ordinarily have made out of it.

But whenever these verses are quoted, everything else will be skipped, and only verse 5 will be shown. Whereas without the story of what its addressing, the rules given that a four months window period be observed (sacred months) and how verse 13 categorically spells it out that they were attacked first, then verse 5 alone may just be used for a different purpose. Either to stimulate wars and strife between people in Nigeria by the political teachers, or to prove that Islam is violent by the non Muslims.

1. Shariah is not to be implemented on non Muslims living in a Muslim state for anything that does not violate the rights of Muslims.
Meaning, no one has the right to flog a non Muslim who is caught fornicating for instance. It is a law for muslim adherents. So you see the crazy news of hisbah in kano punishing non Muslims for eating during Ramadan. Its crazy. They are not qualified to inteprete the laws


2. No poor thief will have his hand cut off as the media portray. Anyone who steals under necessity in SHARIAH, he is to be given his provisions by the state. It shows that the country has failed him and pushed him to commit theft to meet his needs. The conditions for cutting hands is that the thief steals out of greed, and the person he stole from is poorer than him. If this law is to be enacted, it means those politicians who steal from the poor masses are the ones qualified for cutting of hand

3. Stoning to death for adulterer and whipping with cane.
There must be two conditions for this:
A. The person was caught by three witnesses
B. The person confesses against his own self and agrees to the punishment.

If A is met and B is not met, it is null and void. If the three witnesses catch him and he still says no! He did not do it, then he is to be made to swear by Allah that he is telling the truth. After he does that, then his punishment or forgiveness is between him and Allah alone.

Shari'a is the law that govern Muslims just as the English law governs us. The Koreans do not use the British laws neither do the Americans nor Chinese. It is a systems. system that stipulates matters of inheritance, justice, measurement, and retribution and even zakat (taxes). It is not for illiterates. So if you see a funny looking bearded smelling man that calls himself hisbah flogging a Christian in kano state. He is not enacting Sharia. He is practicing anarchy and confusion. And such a law would not have been allowed in an American university like Harvard if it has not been investigated properly not to mean robbing non Muslims off their rights

Your points and explanations are very valid. I totally understand all the angles you highlighted. Many parts of the Bible have been turned upside by Christian sects and denominations too. It's just that the one turned upside down in Islam relates to fighting and achieving victory in a fight (which directly means killing). People turn things upside down in every religion. The Cele worshippers go around barefooted because it happened in the Bible between Moses and God in a location. Moses was asked by God to off his shoes there because God's presence there makes the place holy. But the Cele worshipper may tell you that God is everywhere on earth here too making everywhere holy for them to go around barefooted too. And besides, it is God's earth. Other Christians frown at Catholics bowing down to images because it is condemned in God's 10 commandments.

Also, the church and pastors are involved in a lot of wrong things. But in all these, there are good people following the doctrines of Christianity and Islam as God wants it. There are good Pastors and Imams teaching and following the correct ways of God. We should not condemn or find fault in each other's religion. That will lead to intolerance. Every man will face judgment with God per head.

Unfortunately the people saying the most about him are the Ones who know the least. While those who know the most are shy or ashamed to speak up because of public opinions.


Some of us may have given you reasons to doubt this, I really apologise and it affects us badly too to be misjudged and misunderstood because of these people. We do wish that smart people like you can always easily discern what actions amount to islam by illiterates and the ones that are the true definition of our religion. The same way I regard news of pastors doing or saying those things I have never imagined my Catholic friends do. In fact it was the Catholic friend who trained me on solar installations. He gave me my first car too. And I lived under his roof at some point in life. So you can see how easy it will be for me to discern a true Christian from another.

Even in the north where is believed that Islam is being turned upside down majorly, the very sweet friendship, help and love you will enjoy from a good Hausa Muslim based on what he beleives from Islam, cannot be compared with anything.

I think the people who judge Islam wrongly have just not been convinced enough and/or allow themselves to be convinced.
