sharpwriter:he hasn't done anything wrong infact the mechanic is the best for you. Viscosity of used oil in the engine is equal to new power steering oil. Because it's now lighter oil. My own experience was a terrible one, I studied mechanic engineering and I'm very good in automobile, I fix most of my car trouble shootings myself. But last week, I was very busy with a contract job in maiduguri, I traveled with my Peugeot 407 from Abuja to maiduguri and return to Abuja. The engine gave a very good paformance with great speed, no issue on the road. When I return to Abuja, I noticed engine cover was liking oil, I becon on this disaster mechanic. Just to open the cover I place gum to stop the lickages. Bro he knocked my engine, he went and open timing compactment just for no reason and and fixed the timing wrongly. Imidiately I start the engine. The engine hook. Now I need 300k to fix the car. I only cease his tools and his phone. |

Just that Kareem doesn't have a clear explanation to it. And everybody here pretending new to it. Nothing wrong with what Kareem did. Even if it is 2015 car it has no damage to car in anyway. Used use is more thicker than ATF fluid which doesnt allow it leak faster. There was a day, ny camry fluid container was leaking, and the steering rack so I bought 5litres power steering oil, around 4500 or so. I keep topping the fluid, before I decided to fix it I bought up to 12k atf. I have already took it to mechanic for checking already... the mechanic say the rack was leaking and repairing of leakage steering rack was 70/30 chances. That is not advisable to repeat it, and repair cost is almost close to buying tokunbo and it doesnt ready same day. So he will advice I should change the steering rack complete. Now, this is the car use a running around, even if am going to toilet, I drive it.... now the only solution is to change the steering rack when ever am ready, buying new ATF inside it, I will be a waste of money when it's already damage... New aft is not as thick as used oil, so used oil will stay long than aft. 1 litter of cheapest ATF is around 1200 or so, while 5 litre is around 5k plus. And funniest thing is that the black oil stops some minor leakage damage in some leaking steering rack. So you keep using the black oil until you have money to change the steering rack. Steering rack doesn't connect to the car engine in anyway, so it has no damage to any car. |

sharpwriter:He said use the oil because he could not fix or replace the power steering mechanism. It is leaking and it is bad. You can buy power steering fluid for 1k and use it for 8 years with no problem if the system is working fine just like hydraulic. Your mechanic knows nothing and he is not telling you the truth if he knows. |

[quote author=sharpwriter post=105856729]He has been my Dad's mechanic for long and he's a veteran in the job (I respect him though) but let me still call him a Kazeem since hin no dey exotic and formally educated like Oga Gazzuz ![]() Now, there is this Nissan Primera 2.0LX of the 90's series that I got from my Dad. The engine is good and kicking but I noticed that the steering is hard in turning when the car is stationary. I told a Kazeem earlier (not this one) about this. He said it is the power steering pump that is faulty. I looked away and continued driving it like that because I believe I will find a solution later. Also, I still see the power steering fluid in the container, so I believed him and thought the fluid is useless after all since it isn't pumping. I told our main Kazeem about this and he opened the power steering container while the ignition is on. He said the pump is functioning and that it is the oil that is very low and also that the steering rack is leaking. He beckoned me to look at it and I saw that the fluid was actually going inside the pipe that led to the steering rack as it should, signifying that the pump is working and that the fluid is low because the base of the container shouldn't have been seen from the top in the first place. Maybe I misjudged because I believed the first Kazeem. Anyways, I sent him to service the engine and also do the power steering to ease the steering turning. Now, this is the crux of the matter :After servicing, he brought back the car, I checked it, saw that the steering turning was better and easier. He now brought out the used engine oil that was drained from the engine when servicing. He said that is what I will be using to top the oil in the power steering container. I said I didn't hear you well sir I opened the bonnet and checked the power steering container and I saw that he filled it to the brim with the used semi dark/dark engine oil that was drained from the engine I was agaped and filled with surprise at the same time (make I no say horror). He was just smiling and talking. He said instead of me wasting my money that that's what I should use, and that if the one there is low, I should top it with the container he gave me initially (that container is up to 5 litres ![]() I was just looking at him with wonder and I asked that what if it is all these new generation cars of corolla, camry etc. He said it is the same thing, that he does it very well and it is good as substitute for power steering ATF fluid ![]() Now, my question to nairaland car gurus and users is that : What can you say about this? Any similar experience? It's better to use gearbox oil removed from the car not old engine oil |

Use visco 2000 engine oil for ur power steering pump and forget the atf oil cos it would damage the pump. |

Some of this so called Kazeems especially the older ones, work with experience. OP, yes engine oil can be used in lieu of power steering oil in older cars and nothing will happen, at least in an emergency case. I have experienced it once when I was using EOD, the power steering oil starting leaking from the rack and I was on the high way, I called my mechanic, he said I should not worry, that I should top it up with engine oil, and I had like a litre can in the car, that was what I used till I got to my destination and it also softened the steering. |

Used oil is a very good substitute for a power steering oil depending on the type of the state of viscosity of the oil used at the beginning. Every lubricants changes it's states with time coupled with the kind of endothermic or exothermic reaction taking place. You can reform a used oil into any liquid by applying a required additives and technic. |

I have been using such oil as my power steering fluid for years now and it performs better than new ATF in a leaking steering pump. It doesn't leak carelessly. |

oladipuposadeeq:Any mechanic putting condemned oil after coupling is wrong. After installing new parts, even using new oil as lubricants for easy installation, you don't go back to using dead oil. Speaking from experience since we fix diesel generating sets.
