Seems like the CIA still like their mi17s, meanwhile we are hunting cobras.

https://eurasiantimes.com/leaked-images-go-viral-in-the-us-after-russian-origin-mi-17-helicopter-gets-spotted-on-north-california-farmland/?fbclid=IwAR0hALsSb-HTCpypkyrnI5xhSivPZ9uWPr4QYwNiDuSvN2u_oAPB_lfLMJY&amp

Arch-rivals US and Russia do not get many opportunities to use & test each other’s military equipment. However, an uncommon incident was sighted on US soil earlier this year when the Russian-origin Mi-17 helicopter was spotted in North California.

It was sometime in May when Dan Moore, a member of the Civil Air Patrol, had unusual visits by not one but two mysterious helicopters in his farm in North Carolina.

First, a Russia-made Mi-17 Hip-type helicopter made an emergency landing, and later, a Bell 407 helicopter arrived at the location carrying the required replacement parts.

“I received a call from my neighbor saying, ‘Hey, did you know there is a helicopter in your front yard?’ Moore said while describing the incident. “Wait, what? A helicopter? In my yard? I was confused, but also primed and ready to return the favor when I figured out somebody had made an emergency landing at my farm”, he was quoted as saying by the Air Facts Aviation Journal.

The Mi-17 helicopter involved in this incident had a tan and brown camouflage scheme. It also had a big section painted in black on the right side of the fuselage behind the exhaust for one of its two turboshaft engines. Moore also recorded a video of the helicopter which had landed on his farm.

Even though the photographs or the video do not clearly indicate any markings to identify the operator, the helicopter did exhibit a host of military functions such as a sensor ball turret under the right side of the cockpit along with supplemental armor panels which were present on both sides of the helicopter.

A large particle separator, which is useful for conducting operations in sandy or dusty environments, was fitted on the front of the helicopter’s two engine intakes. Its tail boom was covered in antennas, including a platter-type one typically associated with high-frequency satellite communications (SATCOM) systems.

The crew chief told Moore that the helicopter would need to stay on his property till it could get repaired. Soon enough, a Bell 407 arrived at the location with the required replacement parts which could get the helicopter back into action.

This helicopter was a dark grey one and had an uncanny similarity to the mysterious trio which was spotted flying over and around Los Angeles in January 2021.

Helicopter in yard
The Mi-17 helicopter being repaired by a crew at a farm in northern California. (Image courtesy: Air Facts)
The similarities included the same “O WING” or “egg-beater” type ultra-high-frequency (UHF) SATCOM antenna on the tail boom and a pair of blade-type antennas under the forward fuselage.

These types of antennas are used for the transmission of high-frequency radio signals. The helicopter also had high landing skids, commonly found on choppers used by law enforcement agencies or the military.

The Bell 407 unloaded its cargo and left almost simultaneously. The Mi-17 was repaired and left for its destination the following morning. According to Moore, the crew did not state the organization to which the helicopter belonged. “These guys were all former military…it was all very hush-hush”, he said.

Who Was Operating Mi-17?
When the Bell 407 helicopters were spotted flying over Los Angeles, TheDrive news portal speculated that the operator could be the Aviation Technology Office (ATO), a highly secretive unit of the US Army. It is very likely that the Mi-17 involved in this incident is also operated by the ATO.

This speculation can be further backed by the fact that the ATO, previously known as Flight Concepts Division (FCD), shares strong ties with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The CIA is also known to operate many foreign-made aircraft, including variants of the Mi-17.

We should be thanking you; this thread is a rear place of sanity on Nairaland, which is ironic since the theme is military and war. You’ve put in an incredible amount of effort and persevered when some have been discouraging because they want all major voices to sing the same negative tunes. Honestly, every now and then, Shaun needs to send members like you special words of thanks.

About six months after it was declared missing, the Nigerian Air Force Alpha Jet marked NAF 475 is yet to be found.

SaharaReporters had reported how the fighter jet went missing on Wednesday, March 31, 2021, in the insurgency-ravaged Borno State in Northeastern Nigeria.

The spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, Edward Gabkwet had said the fighter jet lost contact with the radar in Borno State earlier that day.

Gabkwet said the plane disappeared while on an interdiction mission in support of ground troops. He said the mission was part of the ongoing counterinsurgency operations in the North East.

“The loss of radar contact occurred at about 5:08 pm on 31 March 2021,” he had said.

“Details of the whereabouts of the aircraft or likely cause of contact loss are still sketchy but will be relayed to the general public as soon as they become clear. Meanwhile, search and rescue efforts are ongoing.”

A few days later, Boko Haram terror group released a video showing its fighters shooting down an aircraft thought to be the NAF 475 alpha jet declared missing.

In the video that is about seven minutes long, the jet was seen flying low to the ground while the insurgents shot at it.

However, Gabkwet dismissed the video, adding that there was an ongoing search for the missing fighter jet.

“The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to some videos being circulated on Social Media, as well as media reports drawn from there, alleging that the NAF Alpha Jet aircraft, which was reported missing in Borno State on 31 March 2021 after losing radar contact, was shot down by terrorists. One of such videos, in particular, began with sporadic shooting by several terrorists, including underage children on motorcycles and vehicles. It later skipped abruptly to a scene depicting an aircraft exploding mid-air, supposedly as a result of enemy action. Another part of the video showed a terrorist, who, while standing by the wreckage, claimed that they had shot down the NAF aircraft.

“Although the video is still being thoroughly analysed, it is evident that most parts of the video were deliberately doctored to give a false impression that the aircraft was shot down. For instance, the video clip failed to show the correlation between the sporadic shooting, which even from casual observation was obviously aimed at ground targets, and the sudden mid-air aircraft explosion. In addition, it is almost impossible for an aircraft to have exploded mid-air, in the manner depicted in the video, and still have a good part of its fuselage, including its tail, intact. Indeed, an explosive impact of that nature would have scattered the debris of the aircraft across several miles,” he had said.

Speaking exclusively to SaharaReporters on Monday, the Air Force spokesperson said different rescue operations are ongoing in order to ascertain the whereabouts of the fighter plane.

“If there is anything new, actually I will tell you. We are still searching for the jet, if there is any new information, you will be the first person to know. No information on its whereabouts now, the search is still ongoing. It’s a continuous process,” Gabkwet told SaharaReporters.

Asked about the fate of the pilots and their families, he said, “There is a difference between absence without leave and missing in action, they are protecting our nation and got missing. Ours is a process that takes up to seven years in this kind of situation. The pilots are still part of Nigerian Air Force till date.”

I know some people will disagree with me on this, but if we are to have a so called country of law and order, these things shouldn't be happening.
These suspected bandits were captured alive by our soldiers and vigilantes, yet they were executed in broad day light and then set on fire.
Is this what some will call a civilized country? Everyone involved in these murders should be charged. It shouldn't be up to security forces to carry out executions of unarmed suspect, not even terrorists, this is not the way, it's another extension of barbaric acts that dotted that country.
Let these people have their day in court, throw them in prison etc, but that's for the courts to decide. Regardless of the crimes they've been accused of, there are rules in place for these, seems no one bothers to follow them, then burning their corpses? From security personnel? That's highly unprofessional, we can do better.
This job isn't easy, that's why it's not for everyone, but this, it's sad.
Guess another 100yrs we will get our shi!t together.

So your idea of someone who haven't being convicted of a crime being labeled a "Suspect" is new to you? Okay.
And suspects do kill people, is that a new thing? what villagers overpowered security force, stop making excuses, i watched the video.
Anyone arrested for commiting a crime is called a Suspect, only after conviction does that changes. I'm sure you know this.
But hey, carry on with una jungle justice, that will make Nigeria safer I'm sure.
I wonder how many innocent people will die in return.
It's like we fail to learn, acts of brutality from both sides only prolong the sufferings of the civilian population, this is why these criminals never show mercy, because right from time, you catch a thief, you burn them to death, then you wonder why they kill people after robbing them.
How long do you think this will go on for? Good luck to naija i guess, all good.

Guy chill abeg... When the bandits were kidnapping people and executing those who couldn't pay ransom, does that shows any sign of civilness.

So you want them to be arrested and taken to court so that one oga at the top will wrk for their release.

Left for me, this type of treatment shld be given to those so called repentant Boko boys.

Gender discrimination. The only female in the house still get discriminated. Seems shockingly obvious to me.

Discrimination is not allowed but it happens anyway.

Nonetheless, I enjoy the contributions of Samuel, Bidexii, Sirius Black and of recent Mr. Intel, JOSCOFELIX.. Henry and Kabe are 2 other intelligent dudes in the House.

My sincere apologies @NafeesaAA smiley

what are you even saying, first of all how certain are you we have just one female in the house and secondly if so how is she been discriminated, have Bidexii or anybody else passed a law that females should not contribute at so and so time, or that female thread members should greet the males every morning b4 visiting the thread.
And sir if by chance you referring to valkerie am more shocked with your statement because she stands gallantly and is well respected in this thread
