Basically, ships and naval vessels in navies around the world, are classified by displacement/tonnage , armament, roles, length, endurance, etc. Each Navy has its on classification of vessels. The Nigerian navy is not an exception. While some will argue that the P18N is a corvette, but classified as an OPV in the Nigerian Navy, i would say, the P18N is the OPV variant of the Type 056 corvette.
The P18N is an OPV, because: (1) it lacks the armament to be pronounced a corvette. (2) its role is one for an OPV i.e patrol of EEZ, anti-priacy, etc. (3)it lacks ASW, SAM, AAM capabilities.
That's my few thoughts about this.

We all agree that the P18N is an OPV. Nobody is arguing to the contrary.

I shared a picture of our Frigate and Navy Type056 ships side by side to show size difference between a Frigate & a Corvette.

Our resident South African clown started arguing something entirely different like government work. undecided undecided

no you shared a pic of your OPVs and called it a corvette then continued your delusion by claiming it can easily be converted to a corvette... Which it can't

frigate
By size (length) a destroyer.
It had SAMs, S-S misilles, EW, ASW and carried a chopper. We called it a frigate for a reason.

nope by tonnage and length it's actually a frigate....and a small one in fact

Just like the meko200 the meko360 was quite heavily armed in its day but it is still in terms of tonnage smaller than most frigates

Only Argentina refer to the meko360 as a destroyer

Absolutely nothing to the contrary, just a comparison to show the size difference between a Frigate and a Corvette.

You can imagine.

According to the manufacturer of the vessel NNS Aradu, which is a type MEKO-360H1, its classified as a "General purpose frigate".
We talked about classification of capital vessels in navies around the world in my earlier post. The Nigerian navy classified it as a frigate. The Argentine navy, operates something similar to ours. It's the MEKO-360H2 vessel. According to the Argentine navy, it's a destroyer.
General purpose frigates, are like the link between Frigates and destroyers. Its systems could be easily upgraded to destroyer standards. In my opinion, MEKO-360H1, i.e NNS Aradu, is truly a frigate. Frigates are slower to destroyers. NNS Aradu is 56km/hr.
NNS Aradu is a frigate.

Dont think quantum of weaponry dictates the classification of a warship

Basically classification is determined by the end user , a destroyer in one navy can be a frigate in another navy , so best to go with end user classification

OPV.... lol.
Nigeria sailed it's "OPV" to the Gambia at the behest of ECOWAS to harass an illegally self perpetuating Head of State.

The OPV has a helideck that carries choppers that can shoot air to sea missiles.
All the other corvettes in its size range built by the same manufacturer never carried choppers. Only SAMs, ASW missile and anti ship.

It was air launched anti ship missiles that sank a UK destroyer very easily during the Falklands war.

The point is that Nigeria has a creative approach to specifying weapon platforms to meet threat gaps....and yes they are projecting power with OPVs that also hold oil spill clean up equipment.. ha ha ha.

They are now getting two large LSTs soon.

The LSTs will be armed with tame 76mm guns but they will carry choppers... hmmmn.

The choppers would be for *search and rescue ", support for oil spill response and may be support for Red Cross.. *wink

Classified missiles.
Choppers are a mix of AW139s and A109s... maybe eventually a Chinese make.

please go and make research most of your argument are baseless. A p 18 can be armed if the need come.you have no point in saying that a p 18 cannot be armed. If the nigeria navy want it to be armed they will go for general refit of the ship

Nigeria bought Aspide, Exocet, Otomat missiles in the 80s and 90s. The entire world knows this.
The story goes they destroyed them all. cheesy
A NAF vision document recommended the procurement of Chinese anti ship missiles for the JF17 Block 2. There is no indication yet whether they have been bought or not.

LEST WE FORGET:
On this day eight years ago, four masked gunmen walked into Westgate mall and laid a cowardly attack on unarmed shoppers.
As a result, innocent lives were taken and several people injured.

Westgate served kenyan security forces important lessons.

Frank Lowy, the Westgate mall owner was also involved in-guess what,(drum roll!) the WTC!? His Westfield America has a 99 yr lease on 1,2,4 and 5.

Fifty days before 9/11, Larry Silverstein's Silverstein Properties and Frank Lowy's Westfield Americas ecured a 99-year lease on World Trade Center Buildings One, Two, Four and Five. Silverstein already owned Building Seven. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey handed over control of the World Trade Center to Silverstein and Lowy on July 24, 2001. Lowy leased the shopping concourse area called the Mall at the World Trade Center, made up of approximately 427,000 square feet of retail floor space.

Silverstein and Westfield America insured the complex for $3.55 billion, but after the attacks of September 11 lodged a claim for $7.1 billion on the premise that each plane collision constituted a separate act of terrorism, doubling the payout. Most people know about "Lucky"Larry Silverstein's part in 9/11 and his dubious connections to Binyamin Netanyahu et al, but not much has been reported on Lowy, so let's have a look.
http://spikethenews..com/2013/10/kenya-frank-lowry-owner-of-westgate-mall.html

Luckily, for Londoners Al Shabaab have only threatened his properties there.

Do not hesitate': Terror group calls for 'Westgate-style' attacks on Westfield shopping centres in chilling new threat from militants behind bloody Kenya siege
Westfield shopping centres singled out in terror group video threat

Threat was released by the al-Shabaab jihadist organisation who were responsible for the bloody 2013 Westgate siege
The Australian shopping company co-founded by Frank Lowy owns scores of stores in Australia, the UK and the United States
'Just imagine what the dedicated mujahideen could do in the West to American or Jewish shopping centres across the world,' jihadist said
Malls in America and Canada were also listed as potential targets by the group

This incident woke Kenyans up to the reality of false flag terror.

I got high hopes and expectations for this visit. I do remember that the last COAS, made contact with the proforce CEO,but it was very obvious then that Buratai wasn't serious with making a deal with proforce.
I like this present COAS and the present crop of high ranking officers leading our military. Gen. Faruk approach, looks much more determined to bring the needed positive impact on our Army.
