Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that through the Economic Sustainability Plan, the present regime has saved over one million jobs and forestalled the closure of over 150,000 small businesses hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is as he said that social protection schemes can break the cycle of poverty, give real access to jobs, economic opportunities, and improve human capacity.

Osinbajo said this on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking virtually during a United Nations High-Level Forum on Jobs and Social Protection.

Senior Special Assistant to the Vice-President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, disclosed this in a statement titled, ‘Why social protection schemes are crucial, by Osinbajo at UN high-level forum on jobs’.

According to him, Nigeria’s response to the fallouts of COVID-19 was guided by the conviction that “social protection schemes are crucial, and can break the cycle of poverty, give real access to jobs and economic opportunities, and improve human capacity and productivity.”

He added that the Economic Sustainability Plan which was the government’s response is aimed at restoring growth by mitigating the macro-economic shocks, tackling the health challenge, averting business closures, protecting and creating jobs, protecting the poor and vulnerable while repositioning the economy for future resilience.

The Vice-President further explained that “in addition to scaling up health interventions, the Plan contained labour-intensive interventions in agriculture, housing, and public works programmes and the provision of solar energy to 5 million homes.

“The ESP also had a Survival Fund which gave payroll support to small businesses in manufacturing and services as well as to artisans and transporters. As a result of our interventions, we have been able to provide finance and off-take opportunities for millions of farmers.

“We have also been able to save up to one million jobs and prevented the close-down of at least 150,000 small businesses. We are also able to extend support to vulnerable groups by deepening our existing social intervention programmes and the development of a Rapid Response Register for cash transfers to the urban poor.”

He noted that poor financial resources remain a constraint to achieving set objectives, saying “the importance of the recently approved increase of $650 billion in SDR allocations for improving global liquidity.”

The Vice President was referring to Special Drawing Rights; supplementary foreign exchange reserve assets defined and maintained by the International Monetary Fund which represent a claim to currency held by IMF member countries for which they may be exchanged.

He also restated the call for improved access to vaccines and sustained funding of gas projects, stating that “we believe also that the already challenging global environment is now being further complicated by lack of access to vaccines as well as by policy moves in developed economies and international financial institutions to defund gas projects.”

On climate change, he said “it is clear that climate change and environmental damage will harm the prospect of creating jobs in many countries of the world including ours. Yet we know that access to energy is vital for generating the fast growth required to create jobs and to provide the resources for social protection.

“For a gas-rich country like Nigeria, we have to deploy gas not only for electricity but also to reduce the carbon emissions that result from the use of firewood and coal for cooking.”

Lies! You people didn't only move the unemployment figures from 11% to 31% you equally successfully made us the poorest nation on earth. This administration has failed woefully in terms of Job creation and human capital development! The inflation rate is at shooting through the roofs the dollar to Naira exchange is just so bad. A lot of Nigerians who believed in this country have lost all sense of hope here and can be seen with the daily increase of Nigerians who want to run away from the country. Most people just work and save now to get enough resources to just JAKPA!

Commendable! Well done FG and all the patriots who made the feat possible. In one country, right now their citizens are sleeping at fuel stations and losing manhours but we have a reason to be grateful for jobs and businesses saved here.
When the naysayers say there's casting down in the land, we will say there's a lifting up.

How were you able to save small businesses from shutdown. When all we do is turnover and trying to survive

I will buy goods today after selling and making profit. I will go back to buy another goods only to notice that the price have sky rocketed.
I will have to borrow to complete money to buy same goods.

Tell me how you're saving my business, is the business not gradually dying?
What type of country is this with liars as leaders

I remember when I had to choose between using my last 200 naira to either buy beans or buy an electric bulb.

You know the struggles of every semester ending na. Always no money on ground. Parents will only send you transport to come home.

Undergraduate days will show you shege.

It was late and I was very hungry, worse still, I had an exam to prepare for. I wanted to use my 200 naira to buy beans to cook when my bulb died.

Everywhere went dark, and I needed light to read.

So now I had to choose.

Beans or bulb.

Hunger or failure.

A full stomach or good grade.

I thought of my parents and all the school fees I've paid. So I said let me make them proud. I chose to buy the bulb.

My stomach growled in protest. Intestines were stretching and twisting, still I said 'Success is the goal.'

I went out, bought the bulb in tears, and came back to commence reading.

The moment I inserted the bulb, 'NEPA' took light. My God!

So I sacrificed beloved beans(Please forgive me my fellow beans lovers, I was not too wise that time) to buy bulb to read and you people took light?

I crewed.

Now, there's was hunger raging inside, and failure looming outside.

Beans I did not see, light too, I did not see.

I removed the bulb and went back to the shop to beg for refund, them no gree.

'Please ma, I am the last son of my mama, and I never chop since morning. Just help me.'

My brothers and sisters, people are wicked in this life. Do you know she refused?

I returned home and almost packed my load that night to enter night bus back home on credit. I no do school again.

But I thank God for people with discerning spirit.

In my moment of despair, God raised a helper.

Someone somewhere had cooked one succulent, dry fish-saturated, delicious red oil beans and was lead to share with me.

See, God is powerful.

Me that was seconds away from the great beyond, God made a way.

See pity students.

That's why since I graduated I have devoted my philanthropy to only students.

And today is your time to smile. Are you a student? No money? Don't worry, you have me.

So tell me, what can 50 naira do for you?

You don't have to suffer what I suffered. First 10 to dm from my signature
