The US never ever questioned China's claims to the South China Sea until the 1950s when the POC effectively became the power in China. The anti Chinese claims became even more ramped up from the late 80s when large deposits of hydrocarbons were discovered under the islands straddling the sea.

Has anyone on this forum bortherd to at least preview the very many treaties on the South China Sea from the 1870s? Some responders to your comment genuinely assume that the US activities there is out of love for China's neighbours...really? People still haven't seen through this diplomatic charade at this stage of international relations?

Imagine Chinese or Russian subs crawling around the US Gulf Coast or even the Caribbean. Imagine China carrying out naval exercises in the Mediterranean. Why would any African accept that the US and Philippines (their former colony) can carry out naval activities in the South China Sea without a Chinese reaction?

There is claim of some international sea demarcation treaty from the 1980s. And accusations of China building artificial islands around the Pratly...the US have bases in Guam and Midway. The US would build same artificial islands of it was the one with China's disadvantage. Why are Africans so conditioned to take the side of the West (particularly America) without at least having a critical understanding of the matter at hand?

You're right about China's intentions to defend itself. Its what Russia has been struggling with for years, with the US and its NATO allies building up bases around Russia. The West disobeys international law to protect itself like Iraq and Afghanistan but when other Countries do the same they start crying foul play. Such double standards. But of course Nigerians by default accept anything the West says, believe and supports them when they break international law. On the guise of protecting themselves. Russia and China should be friendly with their neighbours. China is surrounded by enemies who are US military allies. In America, most countries are US allies apart from cuba and Venezuela.

Uk, france, US, Belgium, Portugal, Italy explored the world during colonial era. Many nations around the world are former colonies of these countries.

I feel everything you wrote. Our behaviour here is conditioned by over a century of exposure to Western control directly via colonial governments, edicts, educational etc systems and indirectly via commerical treaties, cultural exchange through movies, music, TV, news control and interactive medium like the commonwealth of nations etc.

Some of us had to consciously disabuse our minds off such indoctrination and hypnosis to realise that we live in a multipolar world where there are no real good guys vs bad guys but only a crowd of competing nations. I keep asking anyone to point to ONE war instigated by China in their rememberable memory. But the US dropped a bomb on an Iranian government agent, General Suleiman, who was in Iraq on OFFICIAL government assignment and told the world that the man was a terrorist! None of us ever heard his name before, not ONCE, but most quickly agreed that he deserved to be killed in such brutal way since America said he was a terrorist!!!

Imagine China drop a bomb on the defence minister of Scotland and tag him a terrorist...just imagine! But the US gets a free pass with all of us whenever they commit glaring illegality!

Someone also said the US always respect UN resolutions compared to China. I was typing then thought not to bother with such low IQ talk. What UN resolution has China disobeyed? How many UN resolutions against Israel has US not ignored and encouraged Israel to disobey?!
