On the island, If you don't have at least 3k, you cannot feed yourself with good meals daily. Now calculate that per month with accommodation and transportation.

Many people will still not learn; and they will be living on the mainland and running to island to earn 40/50k, so that they will say they work on the island with yeye coat and tie...  Leave house 6am, return home 9/10pm due to traffic, instead getting a job at Ikeja or Ogudu or Gbagada etc ... The worse are those living at Ikorodu areas and working at VI 11 Likes |

I had two job offers in the month of August. one on the mainland and the other one on the island and both are privately owned. have been working all my life on the mainland so when both offers came i was in an hurry to change environment not knowing that it won't be that rosy.
The pecks that come with the job on the island is better than that of the mainland; HMO, pension, free internet connection( thats what i am using to access nairaland atm).
The mainland job offer is basically your salary only and nothing more. but my first encounter on the island is the issue of accommodation, after spending the month of september with a so called relative in Lakowe, Ajah she kicked i and my friend that we came for greener pasture on the island out of her house.
We approach the organization for an accommodation but they only rescued us with a house made of wood( these type of houses are common in Ajah environs close to riverine area infact they cost more than normal single room on the mainland). we accepted the place this early october; but you see the mosquitoes in that environment eeeeehn, i know by the time i go for medical check up the malaria in my body system will be something else.
For some days have not eaten good food, at times i eat once a day and at times i will just go to bed without food. my september salary has been used to settle backlogs of debt i acquired in order to sustain the month of september. now nothing is left.
I approached the organisation for a soft loan to hold body and soul together for the remainder of this month but it seems it is taking forever to be approved, though they helped during my first week of resumption and everything they borrowed me was deducted from the september salary. the transport fare from Lakowe to my place of work was very high. N400 everyday as tfare. but where the organisation got us now is on the same street.
My look as change as a result of poor feeding. if i am to take the job offer on the mainland, the hunger wouldn't have been this much since i have family and friends over there.
I cannot go back to take the offer because it would have been taken up by another person even for the fact that they were begging me with the job. no money for feeding here again on the island and nobody to turn to and i am this shy type that don't like begging from strangers. i pray i don't die of hunger here.
The staff i and my friend met on ground here are not too friendly as they are grumbling that we are being paid higher than them, how do one approach them for this kind of situation?
I do come across people soliciting for funds here on nairaland just for feeding; that hunger shit is very real; you will be so hungry that even cow poo will look like Domino's Pizza. i am seeing myself now as a beggar with a job. i dont mind to get a loan even from my my enemy till month ending just to feed. i am not happy with myself for taking this decision.
please before you take up that job, think very well and weigh the short term and long term benefits and be fully prepare for the inconveniences that might come your way. Life is not easy but we all keep pushing. It’s sad that someone was kind enough to house you for an entire month and now you are calling her so called relative she did you a kindness even though short lived.Learn gratitude it comes with its own special blessings. The problem with collecting a loan is you easily become a debtor as you would likely need to borrow again to pay off something else and by the time it’s salary day you are broke as non of it is yours. Sorry o but your story funny small. My own tfare back then in Lagos from Ajah to VI/Lekki was about 1700 but I dey collect am from the company sha sometimes (I simply tell my boss).

OP you just need to man up!!!! Can I say we face almost same just that my case is even far more worse, I work on the island, sleep we’re I work and still try to manage my life with the little I can, manage what you have for now and don’t spend above your budget.
Also have a target and a time frame for this job your doing, God help us all 1 Like |

You are gradually becoming a man. Your parents that you want to be eating their free food . Who is giving them free food ?
Now you will understand what your parents go through to pay for rent , and also feed you.
Be strong , this is just the beginning. Figure out how to make extra income .

@magnumproperty, what's stopping you from going to work on the island from the mainland? You can't wake up at 5:00am and leave the house latest 5:30pm? I am trying to get your point here. You got a job with other perks and you are regretting you didn't get the other job that offers just basic salary? You honestly do not have a problem here. Not one problem. I taya o! Op before you start getting any funny ideas about quitting your job because of the inconveniencies you are currently facing, remember unemployment rate in Nigeria is 33%. So you should count yourself lucky that you are one of the few to be in employment at the moment. The situation you are facing might be an opportunity for you to be creative; think outside the box for how to navigate these trying times. And in the end you might see you actually made the best choice of the two opportunities you had. As human beings, whenever we are faced with challenges we tend to think like the Egyptians of old who when God asked Moses to lead them to the promised land started grumbling at the first sign of discomfort. As a personal rule, when i have to make a decision, a pray for God to direct me to make the best decision, after weighing all the pros and cons. But after i have made my decision i try not to keep having second thoughts. I think you should do the same in this case. Always try to look ahead and not behind. Good luck!!! iyatrustee:

Relatives always kicking people out.
I once declined a job offer because of accommodation issues at Lekki. I resumed the first day, when I got home I sent a mail to the HR that I can't continue with job.

Contact one of your mainland relative and move there oga. it is not easy as you think. the organization doesnt tolerate lateness. you have to resume work by 7.30 am. the first time i tried going to work from the mainland to the island, i left home by some minutes past 5, i got to work by 8.30am. you cant predict lagos traffic. and moreover the organization has zero tolerance for lateness |

Same story with me, I live at awoyaya and work in Victoria island, wake up 4am leave the house 5am because of bad traffic, close 3 or 3:30pm because of same bad traffic, get home by 6pm. The good tin is that I have got a place at ajah at least better than awoyaya, thou the accommodation is not that bad, will be packing in by December. I am spending 33k transport every month but when I will move to Ajah I will be spending 16k every month 4 Likes |
