1.8m cantilever well executed

Bravo bro! I love well delivered cantilever without any structural problem. Is it possible to hit 2.5m for the front of the house only without any pillar?

Well so many of the mud houses were built with bambo as support.....recently i was looking at a mud house which was built 1974 was later modernized; cement plastered late 90s.....it was just brought down..the bamboos were still intact ...
I am not saying it can act as replacement or substitute but bamboo been used for years....
Check out this video and many others on YouTube....they are using reinforced glass fiber rebar....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q3cdZba7pck
Sir, the reinforced fiberglass rebar is designed to serve the purpose of reinforcement.
That's entirely diff from bamboo.
Bamboo for reinforcement is odd. I cannot stand it.

I know we've discussed this here before, but seeing it again today, kind of raises the question, can this really be substituted for iron, on a serious note somebody please tell me it's photoshopped, @n3xt and others, have you come across it's usage anywhere in construction.

Want to know if we can port....... Prices are not smiling
I'm no expert but I will tell you this, don't try this for whatever reason. Buildings are falling even with rods as pillars. Just imagine what it would be like.

Another thing is that our blocks, concrete mixing ratio and other stuff are very much below par. You buy two thousand blocks and up to fifty will be in pieces

It can't.
It can never be substituted for wrought iron used in reinforced concrete.
Note:
We don't just use any iron for reinforcement in concrete. The name of the iron used is called wrought iron.
Why?
It has a high tensile stress: when acted upon, it does break at a go, it stretches instead (bends).
When that bamboo dries inside the concrete, it will turn to some thing like galvanised pipe.
If there's a reason for it to break, it will let go easily.
This is a topic 4 anoda day.

Chief, there two confusing inconsistencies (to me, at least) in the above.

1. Wrought iron for concrete reinforcement?

2. Assuming you meant steel, bamboo has a higher tensile strength than steel.
https://www.engineeringdiscoveries.net/2019/05/why-bamboo-is-more-stronger-than-steel.html?m=1

Dire warnings are already being passed here about bamboo but I've read different.

We should not be afraid to experiment IMO.

I can accept that the body of knowledge in the structural prescription and application of bamboo is way behind steel rebar but we can get there.

With a little more open-mindedness, actually, we'll get there.

Good day.

Hello my Oga in the house. I have a question about a small but quite important aspect of a house that is often over looked. Floor drain. I have noticed that they eventually become a major entry point for roaches and sometimes rodents (like rats mice)

The generic floor drain used in most homes is a big culprit. You can mitigate by periodically flushing down a mixture of sniper but you need to be doing this sometimes once every 2 months.

I once found a flood drain that has a closing spring system which allows you tap ( with your foot ) to close. Unfortunately they did not last and the closing mechanism eventually got stuck closed.

Does anyone have an idea how to have a floor drain that is designed to be resistance to pets and other crawlies. Is this something anyone here has noticed ?

Absolutely. If the qualified professionals I engage deliver the appropriate structural calcs and draw on examples from elsewhere.

"Don't try it" is probably how we ended up with 9 inch blocked monstrosities as the norm (in my view).

Good day.

Use “kainkain” (local sponge) to block the drain hole to keep roaches away grin

Good day.

Where the rule is fixed, I become a standard.

I’m doing a mad burglar Protector now. I myself knew it’s crazy cos it slides.
Another client who saw it want something that collapse like an accordion but not the conventional collapsible gates.

People want different but our workmen are only used to one pattern.

I’m working on a frameless glass installation. The installer used the regular U-channel. I’m using stainless steel self-supporting glass base.

Yes, this is normal when you have trapless floor drain, the trap is a water seal like the one you have in WC bowl, which prevent the ingress of foul air, and insects, get floor drain with trap

Try to flush down your drain frequently with cockroach exterminator like ammonia and boil water

Anything is possible!

You can take on the challenge lipsrsealed. True true, I like well- protruded front view of the house cantilever without any visible support. The structural engineer must be good enough to know how to maintain the required balance that will carry the cantilever. Otherwise, na gbesse you go see

Hmm this might work. But would require servicing the hole. Replacing it frequently as the kainkain would become easily clogged with sludge.

I was hoping that we have floor drains designed to prevent this.

Bingo. Just what I wanted. Can trapleds flood drain be implemented after German floor when the house has already been plastered? (Floor is yet to be done though)

I’m currently researching this. It’s true that the spring loaded one doesn’t last but I’m still trying it out I one bathroom.

I’m also trying one with a cover.

The research continues.

This is indeed a valid issue.

To mitigate this, my M&E engr suggested we do without the floor drain in the general open area like WC. Floor drain with trap will still be used for the shower area but none in the open floor area. just evacuate the water when needed.

Not at that stage yet, so undecided on that for now.

I also wonder how reliable the floor drains with trap are in keeping away those external agents.

I did away with the floor drains and only kept the one in the showers. After all we don't have floor drains in the kitchen.
