Depends on the location, maybe there's not enough land to build that's why people go vertical than horizontal, example of such places are: if you've been to Eastern part of Nigeria you will notice that people go vertical (Storeys buildings) while in Northern part of Nigeria there go Horizontally because there have enough land to build......
