Anambra Election: Concerns Mount Over Voter Apathy As Residents Stay Indoors by Shehuyinka: 6:46pm On Nov 05, 2021
CONCERNS over voter apathy heightened on the eve of the Anambra State governorship election as residents stayed indoors despite the cancellation of the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The IPOB had threatened to lockdown Anambra and other parts of the South-East for six days – including the day of the election – if its detained leader Nnamdi Kanu was not released by the Nigerian government.

It was widely believed that the planned six-day sit-at-home was aimed at stopping the Anambra governorship poll in line with the declaration by pro-Biafra separatists that the Nigerian government would not be allowed to conduct elections in territories of the defunct Republic of Biafra.

The sit-at-home order was eventually called off on November 4 – about 48 hours to the election.

While announcing the cancellation of the order, IPOB urged the people of Anambra to turn out enmasse and vote in the election.

But The ICIR observed in Awka, Anambra State capital, and other parts of the state that most residents stayed indoors on November 5.

Only a handful of residents came out of their homes as most of the major streets and roads were empty.

Although commercial vehicles, including buses and tricycles otherwise known as Keke, plied the roads, few passengers were available.

Traffic was light in different parts of the state but vehicles were able to move about freely without any hindrance or molestation.

The ICIR also observed that a handful of shops also opened for business.

The shops operated freely – there were no reports of any attempt by hoodlums to stop anybody from doing business.

Residents who ventured out of their houses to attend to different private or commercial engagements also moved about freely.

But some shops which opened for business closed early due to little or no patronage as most residents remained indoors.

Heavily armed soldiers and policemen continued to patrol major streets and roads in the state.

The prevailing situation heightened concerns that voter apathy would mar the governorship poll.

Further checks by The ICIR revealed that most residents were not aware that the sit-at-home order had been cancelled.

Someone should research and make a thread on how many percentage turn out is needed for the elections to be valid, if any?. Also what spread the winner needs to have and also what happens if this is not met.

The federal government of the day has succeeded in creating an apathy. They cannot even go their usual "remote control" because it will aggravate the security situation.

When next you people are getting a president get a nationalist that can think for himself. Not one that a cabal will be controlling things behind the scenes and tarnishing his whole image for their gain. Too bad he won't live long enough afterwards to see the repercussion. I hope his kin and immediate family never come out of his shadows.

Many people are scared for their lives. The lift on the sit-at-home came too late. Many citizens have travelled out of the state to neighbouring States for their safety. It's really well.

One way or the other, the people of South East must make their displeasure known to the Nigerian government. Whether it's own goal or not, it's important to let them know.

Why is the Nigerian government concerned? I thought they said IPOB is to blame for the sit-at-home? Now they are realizing that the people are voluntarily sitting at home even though the sit-at-home has since been called off. Oh well! Make we dey watch.

Just like that, IPOB is indirectly gifting the same people they so much despise the avenue to take control of the resources in their State for the next four years. Sometimes, I wonder those who brainstorm to come up with their tactics.

I was speaking with one of them, and he told me point-blank that they don't care, all they know is that they don't want any election. Although all politicians are the same irrespective of party affiliation, but IMO restricting movement and lifting it 24 hrs to the d-day is a very dumb move.

Better for them not to vote and APC wins than for the them to come out and vote against APC and APC will still win. If you know what I'm talking about

There are some elections that can't be rigged...overwhelming votes for a party can't be rigged, a party can't rig where it isn't popular...except maybe through the courts...it is better for you guys, at this time in history, to atleast have a party whose ideology tilts towards the Igbos.' At least, when things go to shit and the Nigerian army starts misbehaving as usual, you guys will have a Governor who can have your back, and not a zombie who will stand akimbo and watch his State burn like Uzodinma

The people's votes have never counted; let them write whatever result they want like they did with the Supreme Court Governor.

Not everything you must blame on the President. Your own people are the ones causing pain to their fellow brothers. Disturbing a once peaceful state.

Don't mind them. Sometimes you wonder if this people are intelligent as they claim. You will see them heaping blame on FG as usual for this and sing the praises of IPOB.
