To be candid, $5,000 tuition (an equivalent of the amount) is not too much for medicine. Let us be honest with ourselves. We need to face reality that naira is bad. We cannot get quality with low tuition. And we cannot continue having bad doctors cos students must go to affordable schools. Let us see the real situation as it is, be honest with it, and find solutions instead of just shouting unnecessarily. Fines they will reduce it and rhen what? Produce bad doctors. And people will start dying when these badly trained doctors start practising.

If we do not see these things that they have been destroyed, we cannot move forward. $5,000 is not bad for tuition in a medical school, but we cannot afford it because naira is bad. This is the reality.

Is there any student loan?
Are parents/civil servants paid enough to afford this.
There are schools in Europe with free tution for EU citizens. How do they do that?

With all the recent increase in fed school fees to high acceptance fee, what has changed?
Dont be surprised if these guys pay that tution fee and the quality / welfare of students worsens

Most of those sitting over these callous decisions are beneficiaries of Western Nigeria free education of Chief Awolowo's Government. Without that they wouldn't be educated not to talk of being able to access the opportunities they now have. It is very hard-breaking. Their children are away in foreign countries and the poor can go to hell. It is well. The hens will certainly come home to roost!

We should one day en mass and beat all these politicians to stupor, like deducting 20 years from their current age...

What's their existence when we are not feeling them.

How much is minimum wage? You people wicked gan ni oh

That's not the university's problem. In the US, Ole Miss and Harvard won't charge the same amount. They also won't admit the same kind of students. The socialist mentality that education should be made free or low cost cannot work in a country with hundreds of millions of people. You want to be treated by a doctor who barely saw a stethoscope during training? Because that's what would happen if the university keeps charging pittance and admitting a lot of students.

Lagos did it without federal during Obasanjo. Get sense, don't be a zombie

What is the average salary of state civil servants in ondo state to begin with. So technically what the state government is saying is that only the super rich are entitled to university education.

I don't blame them anyways, Nigerians are slaves who love their chains.

One of the reason there are no jobs waiting for you is because of the fees you paid to go to University. Those who paid forex to study abroad come back and get good paying jobs. So it's up to you. You get what you pay for.

Be deceiving your self there.

Most Nigerians that relocate abroad use this same local certificate to get jobs overs there.

mind your if you study abroad , you will still struggle in the Nigerian job market , unless you are connected or your course is not very common in Nigeria and highly sought after.

Beta soup na money kill am! But will the 'soup' really be made good?

Nigeria offers virtually free education up to Uni level. If the state has more than 1 uni, then people should attend schools that are more affordable.

That policy was a silly policy. It may have seemed great when only hundreds go to school but they should have foreseen a time when millions would go to school and realized the unsustainability of free education in the face of low tax collection.

The socialist policies of AG has created a lot of economic problems in Western Nigeria (trade unions and unlawful cartels, bloated civil service, etc). It also made a lot of people give birth to kids they can't take care of because they believed the government would take control. If people understood that education has a real cost, then they will birth less children and also hold politicians more to account. But if it's free, what are you going to say? Dilapidated schools are a result.

Anyone who can't afford it should drop out. Education is a choice. If a Ghanaian university quotes 12,000 USD as tuition for foreign students, do people protest? No, you find a new school that matches your budget. Many of these medical students want to pay peanuts to get a medical degree then vamoose to UK or Saudi Arabia to earn same salaries with doctors from other countries who paid hundreds of thousands of dollars as school fees. Such arbitrage must stop.
I had to login because of your comment. You are a very stupid person. How much is minimum wage. Do you know how much food items cost? People are suffering. Even if the tuition was to be increased, now is not the right time

As if there is a job out there waiting for you after paying all these exorbitant fees. Students are to pay 2.2 million naira when the minimum wage is thirty thousand naira. Make it make sense please.
During the AAUA saga also, a lot of students who could not afford the increment drop out from school.

The role of the Unversity system is to provide skills and education that will prepare the student to seek employment opportunities beyond the minimum wages. Education cannot be cheap.

Awolowo won't be stupid enough to offer a free tertiary education in this age and time. Where will he get the money from? Dilapidated cocoa house in Ibadan?? Lmao grin

Elementary education (i.e. the ability to read and write) should be the only form of Free and Mandatory education.

Yes. But then it should not be as high as 2.2m! Mismanagement is the bane of Government policies.

It's not wickedness. It's commonsense. What you should be talking about is that government should create policies that can enable people afford these fees.

Education has a cost. Someone has to pay. If the fees are low and government does not pay, the quality of education will be terrible, these are doctors for heaven's sake. The bright ones among them will eventually go abroad after getting degree at low cost compared to their western peers. That's a big drain on the country's resources.

Let people pay market cost. The government can come in with loans (backed with an income share agreement as collateral), scholarships for academically bright students and talented sports people, grants by charity organizations, bursaries etc. That's how education is funded not every time ASUU strike because the university has to rely on government ad nauseam

There should also be a greater check on who gets to go to university. Imagine people scoring 160/400 in Jamb and still being allowed to go to university?

Most often, it has nothing to do with the amount of fees you paid. The question you should ask yourself is, are these courses or syllabi in tandem with today's world?

How many people work in the formal sector? Most people don't pay tax. European countries are socialist and have higher tax rates than the US. You keep more of your paycheck in the US than in Europe. Not to mention in the US the federal government does not own universities (with the exception of military academies which have free tuition). Some states in the US (eg Texas don't even have an income tax).
