Thanks to all those who responded but what am actually asking is "is there any course someone with MLT result can go for to study part time aside the profession."? Thanks

The reason I want to change is because I don't want to leave every hoping for admission without doing some work to facilitate it.

For the past four years, I've been trying and nothing has been coming forth.

Please sir your assistance is dearly needed.

and you're happy?! undecided angry

its unfortunate that we (bsc holders in microbiology & biochemistry) can't sue you guys to court. it would be interesting to see the the kind if judgement the courts will give in a case between AMLSN/MLSCN vs NSM/NSBMB. The idea that a microbiologist/biochemist (bsc) can't work in a medical laboratory is appalling. there's nowhere in the world concessions are not made for bsc holders to follow the biomedical career path. its only in Nigeria that you guys come up with convoluted arguments tojustify an absurd idea. smh! too bad

A pharmacist can work in a lab too. We do Malaria testing practical even phhsicians and every other person at some point we take microbiology courses that dont make me a MLS.

Let's be guided. Research Lab which the hospitals supposed to have is where Biochemistry microbiologist are employed.

It's lack of good management by NMA people tho. Of recent they gave them money for molecular lab they spent it

Hello everyone!

this is a very informative thread. I appreciate the initiative. It's old but still relevant, I find it very helpful. Thanks OP and all who contributed to it.

I have a couple of questions about the required MLS internship. My sister is a foreign student, she graduated last year and is looking forward to doing her internship this year. She has been on the Website to get information on the steps to follow, the form she is required to fill is not accessible. There is alot of information on what to do but no time/schedule included.
Is there a foreign graduate who can give us clear information about the time frame for registration?
Also, I've read through the thread about competitive internship placement and that 'connection' is a thing. I'm hoping this is in a case where one doesn't pass the required exams

I read somewhere on the thread where someone advised writing the exams in SEVERAL DIFFERENT STATES. How does this work? I was going through the thread as a guest so I couldn't quote the exact person to clarify that. I'll appreciate your responses.

Thanks!

foreign graduates don't do internship directly. They spend one year doing a training by the council in a teaching hospital where they take classes, practicals, exam before been licensed. I know of UBTH, UCH been one of those hospitals they are sent to. Check the council website for foreign graduate registration, the current set are about writing their exams this month so I believe they would have started registration for 2022 batch.

No specialty gives you an edge over the other especially in the job market. Because at the end of the day, you are a Medical Laboratory Scientist.

Go for the one you enjoy more.

In my school, we have two choices. A major specialty and a minor specialty.

Personally, I want our council to discontinue this pseudo-specialization. It is doing more harm than good.

Well said, specialization in undergraduate level is not needed. you are a generalist just like it is in Medicine, Pharmacy, nursing etc. it should be at postgraduate level for individuals to choose area of specialty. Apart from public hospital and few big private, every other place will employ you as a Scientist and you should be knowledgeable in all areas. Just choose one you are more comfortable in but get hands on experience in all and read wide. Current technologies like Genomics, forensics cut across every field and they are the future.

Couldn't agree more.
Specialization is a waste of time. Final year should be a year to cement, summarize, and solidify all the knowledge in laboratory medicine. Instead, what we have is a Medical Laboratory graduate that couldn't remember some important things because he/she had left them since 4th year.

Also, our curriculum needs to be looked into. With the likes of genomics, forensics et al.. we need atleast basic introduction to these areas.
