Good question: when you put subsidy on petrol, you are lining the pockets of fuel dealers and importers including the fat rats at NNPC. You are also feeding other countries like Benin, Togo etc with our resources because these products are smuggled across the border into these countries. Petrol is more expensive over there and they rely on smuggled petrol from Nigeria which is cheaper. By directly giving that subsidy money to Nigerians who deserve it, they are able to buy it though at higher price, but the social pay will offset that, thereby plugging the holes of corruption and making the fuel more available to everyone.
What do you think is responsible for the failure of Venezuela and Brazil?

Was tradamoni successful in solving the economic problem!
Was the school feeding programme not the same thing.
What are about the billions of naira invested in interventions
I have not even mentioned #500 billion that has gone waste o!

Now fg will cancel subsidy (it said it canceled three or four times) to now pay another selective subsidy of #200 million every month
And you believe it is a good thoughtful process

My problems centers on the fact that it is an ineffective and inefficient approach to solving the problem of the economy nor helping government clean up it's financial mess!
It is even creating more problems for itself and the nation!

They are still looking for means to steal public funds. Which one is 5k to poor Nigerians?

If you want to remove subsidy, remove it and leave no room for stealing.

If government must create incentives, it must be in the form of public mass transportation, reduced transport fares. Even that one seff, we do not have fair maintenance habit, all the buses will pack up after 6 months, the managers will use that avenue to steal money meant for servicing, fueling and fare charges paid up by commuters.

We are a strange country with no discipline and total disregard for the rule of law.

Democracy no fit us at all

1.Venezuela subsidsies fuel to the point that it costs N40 per liter of fuel there...now less. At the same time, they lose 18 billion annually to smuggling of fuel for the same reason Nigeria does...fuel costs more in their neighbours, and thus a smugglier can make lots of money smuggling cheap venezuelan fuel.

As said by this BBC report in 2018

Smuggling the subsidised fuel from Venezuela into neighbouring countries, where prices are much higher, is big business.

Venezuela loses $18bn to fuel smuggling annually, according to government figures. President Maduro says adapting Venezuelan fuel prices to international levels will stamp out smuggling.

The move is part of a wider plan to increase government revenue in the face of falling oil production, Venezuela's main export income
.

2.As for the 200million naira being paid as subsidy cushion...it sounds like a waste...but that's what economists suggest.

Two areas that would benefit from more expenditure are transportation and electricity. Investments in transportation infrastructure would dampen prices in the economy as transportation costs are reduced. An improvement in electricity generation will also have a large impact on production levels and costs in the country. Presently, many firms are seriously constrained by the lack of electric power for production. It should kept in mind, however, that such investments will take years to materialize.

In the short run, increasing transfers to households would reduce the negative effects of fuel subsidy reform considerably. With proper targeting, poor households could be supported for a limited period, for example, a year. After this period the positive effects from the careful investments suggested above should start yielding fruits. Moreover, as new refineries are built competition in the market will ensure that prices are as low as possible. This was observed in the telecommunications industry where SIM card costs were reduced by more than 90% due to increased competition

Tradermoni is really unnecessary though

Very funny. How will #5k help to alleviate poverty. How will you determine the poor or FG just want to balance the poverty levels of the north and south? I think government is really confused here. What they may not know is that removing fuel subsidy will in simple terms cause the prices of other goods and services to ski rocket

You are still buttressing my points on why Venezuela and Brazil had economic issues!
They were government to the left with directs incentives, subsidies meant for its citizens since they had resource.it was not sustainable because international prices crashed and they found themselves in debt!

The same this administration is doing it is running incentives, subsidies, partial subsidies, selective subsidies which it cannot sustain because it is earning less!

The problems the govt wats to solve are
1.the govt wants to have a healthy balance sheet.
2.it wants to be the first govt to ever have an excess budget
3.it wants to be the first govt that has 30% infrastructure budget compared to less than 10% of the past PDP era
4.attain employment growth.

It therefore means the govt will need to move towards the right.
Where

1.it is not paying subsidy for fuel nor supporting left ideologies of selective incentives
2.it has a growing ecomonmy of at least 6%
3.it has sustainable power to fuel productivity

But it has problems to getting this done
