We gained possession many times in dangerous areas but we just couldn’t make use of it.

That is the tactic deployed which is damage limitation and in games like this its better to have headless running than no running at all. The goal scored was a result of those headless running, On another day Jorginho controls the ball better while Sancho and Rashford just look like mad men.
I doubt Ronaldo will participate in any uncoordinated press when 2 players will be running after 5 defenders and your midfielders are 30yards behind in your half. If Ronaldo does it twice he will just give up that these midfielders are hopeless

Note any press when playing a deep defence is just punishing the pressers
