1 - The current Russian leadership is disappointed that today's Russia is a much less powerful and influential country than when they grew up. One of the key things that annoys the Russian leadership is how the USA and most of its allies have recognized Kosovo as an independent nation, against the wishes of Serbia and Russia.

2 - Russia is using the invasion to intimidate their neighboring nations not to get too friendly with the West, because the Russian leadership wants to have strong influence over them, just like the USA has such strong influence over the other NATO nations, Japan and South Korea.

3 - Crimea is of critical strategic importance to Russia, because it controls their access to the Mediterranean.
This isn't the only time in recent years that Russia has made moves to intimidate a neighbor that wanted closer ties to the West. See also the Russia/Georgia war of 2008.

Another point that isn't made often enough is that Russian leadership often insinuates that their interventions in Georgia and Ukraine are about getting back to the USA on the Kosovo issue. Basically, the USA supported Kosovo in its unilateral decision to separate from Serbia—so now Russia says they're doing the same for "new Russia" (eastern Ukraine).

The Russians put up heavy resistance against the Germans during Operation Barbarossa and decimated most of the German forces while taking heavy casualties on their own side. When the Russians discovered that they had lost a lot, they asked the US for help. The US forces came and finished off the remaining Germans and wrote history that they're the ones who defeated the Germans.

It's just like you fighting someone and when you had beaten the person very well and the person is weak, your friend comes and helps you finish off the person and then everyone starts hailing your friend that he's the winner of the fight.

What most people do not realize is the fact that no great power wants weapons of destruction parked near their border. The American Monroe doctrine expressly forbids any other nation from having puppet regimes with offensive weapons in the entire western hemisphere.
