Django Unchained is a mash-up of comedy, satire, and history, with SLJ's portrayal of a house slave being a creative exaggeration. Clearly, you took his portrayal of a house slave at face value, and tragically, you missed the humour and irony.

Smh. Coming relief has a specific meaning, bro.

Yup, dumb as a shitbrick. grin

The use of humour in a theatrical or literary work, to relieve tension and provide relief.

In a satirical revisionist western or satirical anything for that matter, every character is a (potential) source of comic relief. Django Unchained and Succession (TV show) exemplify this perfectly.

Now ask yourself if you would have felt this same sentiment if it was a man in that role instead of a woman

you guys can call me a sexist all you want but I always suspend my belief everytime I see a strong woman in a movie looking sexy and extremely thin like a runway supermodel with toothpick looking legs and hands and size zero waist

It's almost impossible for a woman to be runway supermodel kinda sexy and be physically strong enough to fight well trained opponents with bigger bodies

It's within the realm of possibilities for a Chris Evans, Ben Affleck, Chris Hemsworth etc to physically fight and hold their own owing to their hunky build but it's impossible for females with body weight of a starving Somalian teenager win in a punch out with someone looking like the actors I listed above no matter the training they've gone through. Someone like Gwendolyn Christie would be more ideal than most of these razor thin supermodels we see fighting bigger men in films. You also see these people handle heavy weaponry that probably weighs around half their body weight like it's pencil they're holding.

this is a rant

Alter/Ego. 6/10

This is a Nigerian movie so expect some blatant mistakes. I found this film lacking the same depth of character as Genevieve’s Lionheart. Both movies are the same production-wise; visually impressive. Drone shots have come to stay in our cinema and are a positive game changer. Our epic movies should follow the trend. I just wish producers put more research into the mindset of professions and their protocols.

I could see the fact the main character was raped as a child from a mile away and guessed it after she won the first case. I guess I’ve seen too many movies go the same route. I hated that comic elements were thrown into a serious subject matter. Ehen, I applaud Nigerian movies for now tackling serious matters evident in our society. Maybe the topics turn audiences off hence why I don’t see it often. Rita Dominic acted in a movie which dealt with rape and for some reason it stuck in my mind despite not remembering the title all these years. Giving the audience something to laugh about in such a case cheapens the message. This is not imaginary Avengers, this is real life.

Our character is a hardened, tough-as-nails lawyer and an unlikeable person, which is very believable. She’s used to physically taking advantage of men and dumping them; a trait I can see in real life. Where the producer failed is blaming her lustful actions on an alter ego crafted after her abuse. To add further insult, the alter ego mention wasn’t delved deeper on. So, a healthy woman isn’t meant to have sexual urges, they have to come from deep rooted trauma? Lol.

Let me list pros and cons of the film before I continue an unneeded epistle.

Pros.

1. Omotola looking sexy.

2. Beautiful drone shots.

3. A serious subject matter. This isn’t your usual romantic movie. It is, after a while, but is not the central theme of the film.

4. The twist midway. Many may see it coming. I didn’t expect it. I expected her to use the man and dump him. Her character was an asshole after all.

5. Her confidence in winning the final case before judgement. It was true to her character.

6. I don’t know if this was intentional; the accused looking less dapper as the accusation and trial drew on. It’s natural for him to get worried and dress less flamboyant from mental stress.

Cons.

1. Finding a foolish reason to explain away a woman’s natural urges.

2. Comic relief. A huge no-no. I wish I was part of a test audience because the movie was better off without it. Once I see some actors my brain goes to comedy mode. I doubt I’m alone here.

3. Lack of research into the profession.
— It is against the law for lawyers to coerce/blackmail clients against their will.

— A scene I hated the most was when the character went emotional after finding out her lover was a rapist. Any true lawyer of the depicted calibre would go straight into lawyer mode drawing facts before emotions come in. She had seen so many cases of power abuse that accusations shouldn’t overwhelm her.

4. The cheap catharsis at the end. A grave of her assailant rather than a living person would prove a better resolution.

5. Omotola looking fat. She was sexy, yes, but a butt lift is nothing compared to what a month or two in the gym could provide.

6. Her blood sister not knowing of her predicament. The director should have changed the role to a cousin or step sister who lived far away as a child. If a child is raped many relatives know about it talk less of the child’s siblings.

7. No follow up on the sister or her fiancé’s punishment at the end. She warned that they’ll face consequences. The director likely pushed the thought aside at the end.

8. Calling an obvious grown woman a girl. Seriously, that woman was at least twenty years of age. They should have used a seventeen year old for the role.

Overall it was a good way to while two hours. If you enjoyed the Genevieve movie you won’t have a problem with this. I always wanted to watch it on DStv. The version they presented was completely butchered under censorship.

Alter/Ego came out 4 years ago. Anybody screaming spoiler for even a year old movie won't really be taking seriously here. The spoiler agitation is for movies that are still fresh in the cinema or on the high seas.

You people cannot post movies without spoilers. I was halfway through the movie today but you have effectively ruined the movie for me because now I know that the climactic fight will be between father and son, but here I was thinking the father will somehow go back to his senses. What is wrong with you people??! The fück!!

This makes little sense. you either allow spoilers or you don't. Putting arbitrary date for a movie to be spoilt here ignores the fact that some/many people here haven't watched the movie. that a movie is kinda old shouldn't mean it should be spoiled. For instance that movie he just spoiled hasn't been watched by me and I can say many people here haven't either and it's spoiled already.
how old does a movie have to be not to be spoiled? 4 months? 6 months? 1 year?

Spoiler windows have always been a thing for every content discussion space. Cos at the end of the day, the content will be discussed. Asking early viewers to delay on spoilers is a fair request. Asking people to avoid including any spoilers in their discussions indefinitely is just unreasonable. Might as well ask them to stop discussing entirely.

Thanks for the insults.

You put up a good definition but a very poor argument to follow up. Comic relief is the use of humour to relieve tension. Where did Samuel L Jackson relieve tension?

The KKK were comic relief with their bumbling ineptitude in that movie. They provided relief from the slave hunting tension.

My nigga, please sit down. Thanks

Keep quiet, please.

The movie was in cinemas. You didnt watch it.
The movie was released for download. You didnt watch it for weeks.

Once I see the rating of a movie that I haven't watched at the beginning of a comment, I do not read the rest of the comment. You are at fault for not watching the movie on time and secondly not avoiding spoilers.

wink

Exactly!! With his suggestion, there's no need talking about any movie even if it's 200 years old because not everyone would've watched it. Makes no sense.

Let's hope his portrayal is believable and different.

Yeah it was unfortunate that many people did not go to watch it. The big franchises are what people love these days.
It's box office performance has nothing to do with its quality.
