ariesbull:Any Okun person that claims Yoruba has not met with a Yoruba person from South West before. Maybe such Okun person lives in the north or lives in Okun region or lives where yoruba people are not present. Yoruba people will be the first to tell you you aren't part of them. But call you agatu, tapa, Ebira or abokiii. It is due to ignorance because majority of Yoruba people don't travel. And they are very tribalistic. Even their fellow people IN South West, they show tribalism, how much more you that is outside their region. Nonsense. Only the educated and INFORMED SW person will agree to Okun being called Yoruba. I spent 17years in my little town here in Kogi West, and I always call myself Yoruba. When I gained admission into a university in SW, I stopped. I was made to feel inferior. My Yoruba accent and some mispronounced Yoruba words( imagine an Ijebu or Ilaje speaking Yoruba with their own accent) always make me stand out and I was laughed at. So why should I still claim to be who I was told I wasn't? Although, I blended after a semester but that experience is enough to deny. Yoruba people need history and geography lessons, too bad and poor! Imagine someone living in face me and face you having guts to look down on you living well all because he's "proper Oyo". Thunder faya them. Nonsense |

yunqdady:oga keep shot... If u are a Yoruba person u wont talked like dis ? You can hardly differentiate between ondo Yoruba and okun Yoruba... So who are the people discriminating you... Don't ever call yourself a Yoruba person with dis kind of attitude... |

yunqdady:You are right. Seun is from Okun, she is my great babe then and she said she isn't yoruba but I told her that he name is... She said in clear terms she is Okun. There is also this babe at ilupeju... She works with insurance firm.. Kemi is her name and she said that she isn't yoruba but ọkụn I have also seen where yoruba deride ondo people calling them Omo Ibo yoruba that they aren't pure yoruba also |

walefresh3:Me i am not Yorùbá but I find it hard to even differentiate itshekiri and Yoruba or Ilaje and Yoruba But if Okun say they aren't yoruba. So be it. They shouid be respected Are they members of odua in Okun the way we have Ọhaneze in Anioma and ikwerre |

walefresh3:I'm Okun and not Yoruba ok. Leave Ondo and Ekiti people out of this, those ones not even all o, regards us cos we are neighbours. One stupid Ogun boy would always refuse to speak Yoruba to me but English and sign language cos to him, I'm not part of them. I will be speaking correct central Yoruba, uncle will be replying with English and sign language while calling me Egbira. And u want me to associate myself? But those Oyo and Osun ehn, very very stupid set of people. One boy living in a hut in one abule IN Osun will open mouth to call you names that you are not part of them, so why should you form attache by force? |

ariesbull:You get it. I remember then, one Kabba lady in class, we almost fought, I told her she's Yoruba, she said no she's not. That her father told her she's Kabba/Okun and not Yoruba. It was later on I understood her stand. The father must have been embarrassed before hence his stance. It's just like Black Americans vs African Migrants in the US. That sort of beef. When it's time for politics, they suddenly remember you are Yoruba but aside that, they insult and quote stupid history. Even Ondo people sef, those Osun/Oyo people don't regard them. Very tribalistic people. I'm typing out of anger. But it's funny you people calling me impostor. Don't worry, majority of Okun people accept being called Yoruba but few of us that have tasted tribalism prefer to choose our own identity as Okun/Yagba as the case may be. acidosis, erokun sir, what's your take, I learnt you are from Isanlu. Do you see yourself as Yoruba or Okun? |

kollinzgee:As in. They really succeeded in creating the division. What is Kogi? A political nomenclature coined by the Northern Oligarchs. It is neither a tribe or a culture. Same thing with those foo.ls that refer to themselves as Niger Deltans. |
| Re: I Am Not Yoruba I Am Kogi: this Thing Is Everywhere. by yunqdady: 8:42pm On Dec 30, 2021 |
ariesbull:Yea, there are Oodua association In fact, Okun is more Yoruba than some tribes in South West but those Yoruba ignoramus believe we aren't part of them due to geographical location. Many of them do not even know about anything called Okun. It's ignorance on their part. We have Obas, OPC, Oodua whatever whatever, cultural traditions same, ifa, osanyin, everything, dress, language all points to Yoruba. Majority accepts being called Yoruba. Many do not even know about all these divisions until they leave the Okun land and see that many SW people don't recognise them. Imagine all your life you have believed you are Yoruba, of course you are, but getting into the midst of the core Yoruba people, they deride you and call you fake Yoruba, agatu, aboki etc how would you feel? We actually don't have to claim Yoruba to feel whole, we have the okun/yagba identity and its solid. What should happen is education of the young ones about Okun people. The elderly Yorubas, let's say 60years and above know but to the Young ones, life start and end in their local huts, any one outside is a stranger. My cousin had a baby for an Oyo man, till today, the teenager is seen as an outcast just cos he's partly from Kogi yet he's a Okun part. You can imagine. Same way many Anambra sees Ebonyi people as not part of them. It's sick! |

@yunqdady: I've always held the view that anyone is free to be whoever he chooses to be. Your case is rather unfortunate because your obvious anger stems from firsthand experiences you had during several encounters with SW-based Yorubas. You're only human, therefore I cannot fault your reaction to these unwarranted/unpleasant experiences from your supposed kinsmen. Their attitude towards you was borne out of sheer ignorance. Let's just say Nigeria happened to all of us; we're all victims of the geographical fraud that previous administrations perpetrated on our race to balkanize, divide, and engender this exact attitudes towards one another. However, in spite of all of that, I would still urge you to sheathe your sword out of maturity. You have more to gain as a component of the larger yoruba family than as an ethnic minority (there's power in numbers). There may well come a time when the geographical aberration/anomaly that birthed this problem would be redressed once and for all. Until then, all the best. |

sirwilly5:You don't have deep knowledge about what you are discussing. * There is no language called Okun. Okun is the way ways Yorubas salute each other while working and it literally mean 'strength' The word Okun was adopted based on the suggestions of the ace Historian, Prof Ade Obayemi and other elites from the old Kabba province as a name to identify certain Yoruba speaking people of the province that share close relationships. There are other people that also speak Yoruba language in addition to thier distinct languages in Kogi but have assimilated substantial Nupe and Ebira population and thus consider themselves non-okun e.g Oworo and the Ogori-mangogo people respectively. However, the most important issue is , do Okun people consider themselves as Yoruba? The answer is an overwhelming YES. |

juman:Oba Adetona gave an account of the origin of his lineage from Sudan. There are Yorubas from what we now call Sudan, Ethiopia and several other African Kingdoms/Empires but over time, they have evolve a unique Yoruba identity. |
