Newly Transferred To Gusau In Zamfara State.. Need Help! by Kewt: 9:31pm On May 23, 2012
Dear Nairalanders,
I work with a pharmaceutical Company and have just been transferred to Gusau, Zamfara state.

Please i have never been to this part of the country and some friends including family have advised me to resign mainly
because of the insecurity in the north.

In the mean time, I have decided to resume there but will like to rent an apartment in a christian dominated area.

Please I crave for advise from nairalanders who currently live, or have once stayed in the serene city of Gusau, Zamfara state to suggest peaceful and christian dominated areas where utilities like electricity and water are readily available.

I earn about N2.8 million per annum and have a brand new toyota yaris given to me by the company as a working tool. Hence the option of leaving the job is not appealing to me for now since i have got no replacement job yet.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

okay now you know. The insecurity is not like you picture it.This states are big and vast in some cases.meaning not all places can be bombed. So the treats are almost like you being unfortunate in a case of robbery.Lastly i expect the common survival instinct applicable in most places, will do just fine. Then i suggest you keep tab on current events. That apart Most states in Nigeria are peaceful. You need to ensure,as usual a place in GRA if any or VIP zones or security zones(but becareful of proximity since they are BH targets in most cases). As it is norm that crisis will hardly get there or have quenched before passing there. It most not be christian dominated areas only. Also the secret of surviving crisis is not moving when it happens. As most victims die on transit than in hiding or staying indoors. My opinion sha!Zamfara and Sokoto rarely have issues of crisis and if any they are usually inter political party and hardly temper with other persons.Stayed in Sokoto and i enjoyed my stay.Is quiet and people just mind there business.

I bet you must be an Igbo guy like me...lol.

The truth, there is insecurity in the truth North but we must survive. I've lived in Sokoto , it is peaceful and they appreciate foreigners. But you have to be careful about words and religion. Dude, go and make your money but please keep your ears open, avoid bear gardens and be ready to seek refuge in the military barracks.

Why don't they post northerners to the north, and keep southerners in the south? Don't preach to me about national cohesion and fostering intergration where the life of my brother or sister is involved angry.

It's not like there's a dearth of qualified manpower up north undecided. Afterall, each northern state manages to find graduates and other indigenes to fill their quota in keeping with federal character and quota system.

firstly, i ill define zamfara for u.
Zamfara is a state where the muslim phanatic inhabit. There former governor (sani yerima) sponsored many religion crisise in northaner state.
He was d real engine behind implimentation of sheria in d north in d year 2001 which lead to religion crisise in some northaner state.
I believe d reason buk guys are not operating for now is because the state governor normaly setle them. So when there is life, there is hope. Be wise.

All these were unknown to us wen we arrived. After a week, omo com see jihad after like a week. They came, fully armed. Thank god it was nt our day to die. D rest can b beter imagined.
My advise, follow ur instincts, nd if u must go there, dnt go wit ur family, if u r married.

I heard from a friend that zamfara and sokoto states are cool states to live because they are emirates. Emirates simply means the name for islamic territories ruled by emirs. So that's the reason why he said so, because the emirs will not take it lightly with boko haram if they try to enter their territories. According to him, Emirs of zamfara & sokoto are powerful and strong emirs. That's what i heard. U can make more enquiries.

did u say nysc? Which school did u attend pls?. The greatest mistake is using small "g" for God or do u mean the gods in ur village? Other mistakes can be overlooked but for g instead G, i suggest u call on God for forgiveness.

I also lived in Zamfara state between 2007 and 2008, precisely in Tsafe as a corp member. I tell you, i have never met a more loving and honest set of people. You see, attitude plays a major role here. But my advice will be that you take the offer and go with your fate and God will see you through. I am a christian and i dated a Zamfara lady while there, and after my nysc, we planned to get married, but my inability to get job on time stuck the relationship.

But presently with the advent of boko harams attacks (even though not yet in zamfara state), one may be a bit sceptical. But safety is of God and no where is safe if God doesnt make it so. Wish you the best.

As long as you keep to yourself, and dont go out of your way to insult Islam/Hausas, you should be OK, because that is wht causes trouble to many non-indigenes living in the North.

As for a christian-dominated area in Gusau, I dont Know of any (and mind you, I know Gusau like the back of my hand. CHristians are scattered across the town because it is largely peaceful.

The few infrequent skirmishes happen around election times, even then only between opposing party supporters.

You might want to be extra vigilant/careful during election seasons.

Contact me if you need affordable accomodation

Mhen! bruv, zamfara's not bad o! Gusau is not so prone to religious violence, and in the unlikely event of an occurence damage to life and property is minimal and often brought under control in good time. Nigeria's got 70% unemployment, I don't think you have any rite to complain even if u were transfered to hell. Go to gusau and do wot u hv to do, pray to God! And hope for the best! Good luck!!
Re: Newly Transferred To Gusau In Zamfara State.. Need Help! by klear(f): 4:58pm On May 24, 2012
IMO no amount of money will make me risk my life deliberately...gone are the days when we can say "naaa it's not that bad" because it is indeed bad now. I don't know about the state but I do know about its ex governor ( the chief campaign manager for sharia in Nigeria ) and the fact that one can't afford to sleep with two eyes closed in the north nowadays. We could have sworn the madness will be limited to the North but it has hit the FCT ( with all it's security) they are trying to bomb places in Lagos & threatening David Mark home town so if they decide to invade the state, it will be as easy as taking sweets from a baby. I will advice you to start looking for another job & if you eventually decide to go there; lay low, mind your business, avoid joints like hell, avoid arguments & provocations & while been prayerful, keep your religion to yourself (unless you are interested in being a martyr). I wish you luck

Well, Presently, I am in Gusau Zamfara State and unlike most states around Zamfara Satte, it has been most peaceful. The most dominated area by Christian is called Premier Road, however, don't deny urself of living in a comfortable environment as I myself I live in the GRA. if you would like to entertain any further information, you can call me on 08060114928 0r call 08180206036.

Op, it is adviseable not to go with your family and find a secure location to live. Information is key when one is a stranger in another land so equip yourself well with it. Good luck and God be with you on your journey.

Dont just worry yourself, i once stayed in Gusau during my service day and it was a lovely period. Anyway, i stayed with landlord who is a christian.
Asper, where to stay that is dominated by christian, you can stay in the following places. Premier road,Tudunwada,Samaru and Nasarawa road. I wish you a happy stay. Go Zamfara is a lovely place, in short, am seriously missing there since i left there to Lagos. I wish will can swapt so that i can take your Pharmaceutical Job in Gusau then you take my bank work here in Lagos.

Hi Kewt,

We can only give advice but the main decision lies with you. Please follow what your heart says, and i believe you're a christian. I once lived in Zamfara State, just like you i was transferred from the SW. I was in charge of 5 LGA's in the state due to the nature of my work and i'll tell you to stay in Gusau, if that's where you'll be based, around Tudun wada, GRA,...as these areas have more of other tribes and christians. Nevertheless, if you will be based outside Gusau, Talata Mafara's the next developed area, followed by Kaura Namoda. In addition, settle down and observe things first before bringing your family, fellowship with like-minded people, either through your church, colleagues at work to keep yourself up-to-date in your field/for opportunities. Above all, respect other tribes and their religions. God's Grace will see you through.

Count yourself lucky. It is very unlikey that you will ever be kidnapped or your property stolen unlike in other parts of the country. There is a security problem in the north but Zamfara is not particularly affected. While religious crises occur unpredictably in the north , I wouldn't consider it worse than thunder strike in probability of getting you involved. It's certainly not even unto 1% the risk of road accident anywhere in Nigeria. Above all you will lose the fear and ignorance about the north. You will find thousands of southern Nigerians conducting good business in alll professions witout any oppression and you can own land and landed property. I will advise you to have friends among the locals, they are hospitable and dependable. I can give you some names. You will never regret your stay in Zamfara despite the attempts by the ignorant and unambitious to frighten you. Good luck!

Prepare for scorching heat- talking from experience.
Again, prepare to feel so alone for a while until u make some friends.
Ironically the place i felt lonely d most was d mamy market where i bought and drank shayo all by myself with no friends.
Life is relatively cheap in Gusau, at least that was the only place i paid okada N10/20 in naija some yrs back.
Try not to close late otherwise, the vigilante men u ll c will make u feel like u are in sahara desert.
Finally start having a long term view of ur life outside Zamfy.
