They did what they had to do to get the government to start focusing on the plight of the region whose lands were being destroyed, and their states suffering financially despite carrying the financial burden of the country.

Their agitations even though to extremes at some point is what brought about the 13% derivation, the Niger Delta development commission and intervention programmes in that region

The region was ignored until they decided to pick up arms, that seems to be the only language the Nigerian government understands...

The same way it's negligence over the years has led to the desolation of Maiduguri and parts of the north east by Boko haram and same thing happening in the northwest by bandits.

In extreme cases one needs to destroy to rebuild, to die so we might live.
But after getting the funds from FG, the elites and those militants enjoy themselves to the fullest while leaving the poor people to their poverty environmental degredation illiteracy poor health facilities among others. They are the one doing themselves.

We were under the impression that the militants were fighting economic injustice. Then proved to be fighting stomach injustice. After receiving scrap from the federal government, they even invested tapping pipelines and stealing oil (which causes economic damage).

bayelsaowei:
Shell can't be blamed for the damages. This story of blaming shell is stale..the community leaders, chiefs and these militants are the culprit in recent times..and they have contributed to the pollution of the of our lands and waters.

yes you're right. Not blaming Shell but they played the larger role. The level of flaring in Nigeria surpasses any other oil producing country and it's not the militants that are flaring. That's why PH is unbreathable and now has regular soot storms (though I don't think the leadership there will figure it out). That soot is slowly ending the lives of the people in that region but Nigeria is very slow to realize danger. When it's too late we'll panic.

But the locals play 60% of the role in causing the damage. And I include federal government in 'locals' because ultimately it's a failure of regulation. That being said, Shell does not behave the way it does in Nigeria in other countries and I know that as a fact

This scenario will soon play out in SE. Soon indegines based outside the Zone will not want to have anything to do with it. Only miscreants IPOB members will remain there.

Communities will start begging indigines soon to come home for Xmas celebrations
But it is not IPOB that has IDP camps and reached the negative milestone of world poverty capital?

When we said this some years back some people insulted us. After threats did not work, they've now started begging.
If they had thought in this direction many years back, the region would have been better off. The insecurity is the reason even the ports are not attractive to business people.

Drugs, paints, plastics are also gotten so I don't think oil is going obsolete in 200 years time

Only 150 youths? That number should be upto 10million youths begging the IOCs to come back... but I don't see that happening, because these Coys are all going deep waters.
We were warned! We had countless opportunities to develop the region and turn it to destination of international choice, but our Governor's have been sleeping.
The level of destruction is massive, and the intellectual draught continues daily.
Crude oil is not going anywhere soon.
For now, we will have to live at the mercies of the indigenous Oil Companies to get things started again, and ofcourse with the massive support of the States and Federal Governments.

It seems only the SW region is getting is right in this Country, our 6 State Governors had better sit tight, put their heads together and come up with solutions quick before we lose all our bright brains to foreign countries.

Shell is making a complete and total withdrawal from Nigeria (on shore) and all other oil companies are taking heed. They will still drill at sea which is where most of Nigeria's oil is anyways.

Other than Akwa Ibom (which is rapidly cutting a niche for its self before it's too late) and Lagos, the entire coast of Nigeria is doomed economically due to the damage Shell left

don't we have indigenous oil companies? Are there no advanced cleanup technologies and companies that can clean up the mess? Remembered an article about a company that was to clean up the mess years ago but due to corruption they didn't come or they left

don't forget most of shell environment degradation is as a result of the same militants destroying pipeline and them also doing illegal crude oil that further damaged the area. U will be surprised to know that she'll has been given those communities billions but our chiefs will sit and share the money
