Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has warned Nigerians against electing people who are above 70 years of age as president in 2023.

He said that instead of electing people who are old enough to be grandpa, Nigerians should elect a young person as president in 2023.

Makinde made this disclosure on Tuesday in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

He spoke during the 65th birthday anniversary and thanksgiving service of Rev Samson Ayokunle, President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and launching of a ministry.

Our correspondent recalls that former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu; and former Vice President of Nigeria, Abubakar Atiku, have indicated interest to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Tinubu had told Buhari that he will contest on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Atiku on the other hand had said that he would contest on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

But, Makinde, who is a chieftain of the PDP has charged Nigerians to choose wisely in 2023.

He advised them to elect people that have the energy to serve the country.

“We have seen a lot of elder statesmen who want to run this country at age 75 or 78. I want them to think twice and I am saying to the people of Oyo State and Nigeria that this world is not easy.

“It is possible for you to delegate, ask people to go all over the place but when they are reporting to you, if something has not been added, a few things may have been removed,” he said.

“We are in election season basically and what I will say to us as a people is that we need to choose wisely and elect the people who have the energy to truly serve the country.”

Good advice.

The problem with Nigeria is not the leaders(who we know are insensitive and selfish) but the people who wield electoral power but lack electoral reasoning. The leaders only leverage on the stupidity of the masses. Take Tinubu for example, whether he's 59 or 69 or 79 or 89 years old, he looks too frail to lead a nation with numerous challenges. This same man would never employ a frail lookin applicant or appoint a frail looking employee to head his AlphaBeta company. That goes to Atiku as well. Just that Atiku appears healthier than Tinubu. But many of the masses are drumming support for hags, seniles, and old-timers who don't give a damn about them. Once again, Nigeria's problem is not the leaders but the people.

Shouldn't he be telling party members who will vote at the primaries this? Seeing as Nigerians can only vote those presented by the parties.

Tell the party delegates not to vote for them and maybe the parties will present 54 year old candidates

Exactly... Especially the two major parties, APC and PDP. The president must definitely come from any of the presidential flag bearer of the two parties.

If both APC and PDP presents candidates above 70 years, what will the masses do?

Discrimination against older people, of 70 and above

It takes time to garner experience and resources in life, especially for running for a capital intensive office of the President

As long as 70 and above contestant are mentally and physically fit to discharge the duty and responsibility of the office of the President then they are free

Are apc and pdp the only political parties in Nigeria? If the Nigerian voting youths have any sense, they would look to other parties with younger candidates.

E.g, jagaband whose wife died in 2018 at the age of 70 but claiming 69 years in 2022. Oniranu ęda. I'd advise he considers either osinbajo or fashola and give him whichever ideas at hus disposal, capable of moving Nigeria forward.
