3. Open a credit file by applying for sim only contract from EE, 3, Vodafone

4. Apply and maintain a good credit card (capital one or your bank account)

5. Check your credit report for free with clearscore, Experian, credit karma, equifax

Capiital one declined the credit card application. Is it because i haven’t stayed in uk for a long time.

PGCE nornally begins Sept/Oct depending on the Uni and ends June /July depending on the Uni again.
Yes it is. You have to apply through UCAS

Good day, Ma. I'm currently applying for PGCE secondary biology. To submit, I found out I have to pay application fee. I want to confirm if I'm applying the correct way, because I haven't come across application fee in the postgraduate application I've come across for UK universities.

Also, if correct, is there a way to pay the fee from Nigeria? My access atm is being declined on the site

Hello Gurus in the house. Thank you all for your wonderful contributions to this group and your contributions have been so helpful. But I need clarification for a dilemma I am in.
So I got in to UK November and got a band 4 position in NHS here in London that include inner London high wages. Their checks were concluded just last week, received unconditional offer and I have giving my word through email to the HR about my starting date. She replied that I have been schedule for an induction and appointment contract will be sent by next week. However, yesterday I got a better offer in Band 5 in an interview I did early this month with higher pay and nearer to my house....
But I already gave my words to the HR of the formal offer work, with all arrangement for inductions now in place.

What can I do ?

Others have given you the answer.
Tie down the second job firmly, then tell the first company that you've gotten a better offer and are withdrawing.
Absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Being a guarantor means if you can't pay, the guarantor will be pursued for the money. It can even lead to bad credit rating for the guarantor.

Can you be a guarantor for someone you don't know? So, it is better you pay for the 6 months or look for family members/close friends that can stand for you.

If you are applying via UCAS, you have to pay an application fee. I think it cost around 26 Pounds or so...

Elders,

I got a new apartment, moved in on January 7th this year (Band C, 2bed). The apartment was previously a business property before it was bought and renovated by my Landlord but still reads a business address on Royal Mail, I contacted RM for an update and they referred me to the address and numbering dept at the local council for the update which is being worked on. My Landlord equally said he has made all documentation to effect the change.

I called the gas and energy (OPUS - they provide energy for only for businesses) provider immediately I moved in to inform them the address is now a residential address and no more commercial property so I can move to another provider, they promised to do the update anytime I called which made me feel at peace.

The problem came in today... I got the gas and energy bill for about 20 days and it is over 600 pounds!

I contacted the energy company and they said I have been billed as a commercial property because they could not update my address due to the fact that Royal Mail still states the address as a commercial property.

The meter readings are accurate.

I carried my Landlord along all through.

What can I do? Ki ni kin se?

Thank you.

Write them a letter by post and email, with your tenancy agreement to show that there’s no business activity going on at least the best they can do is to reduce the vat from 20% to 5%. Tell them you are disputing the bill, that way you can’t incur any additional charges. Is the council tax business rate as well?

No. You still need to do them. Nigerian licence can't be exchanged for UK's. Only certain countries can do that.

Add that to your document proof. If they still refuse to place you on residential billings, report them to the energy ombudsman as a last resort.

Stop applying for a while. Everytime you make an application, most of the vendors perform a hard credit search on your credit history. This leaves a mark on your credit file. Multiple applications in quick succession will make you look desperate and potentially in a bad financial state.

If you haven't lived in the UK for long or have credit facilities with a few vendors, your best bet is to apply for credit building cards. When I first arrived in 2017, capital one credit building card was my first card with £250 limit. Immediately It arrived, I started using it for everyday shopping and paid everything in full a few days later. I did this for a few months and got my limit raised to £1,200. A few years later, I now have a credit limit of £12,000 for one of my cards.

Also, you should be using vendors with soft credit check facilities. This gives you a success/rejection probability of your application, if you were to make one.

You should also open an account with ClearScore. Their app gives you an indication of vendors that have you pre-apporved for their cards.

Note to thyself, use your credit card wisely. It is not free money.

One of my concerns. band 5 just gave me a call after interview that I got the job. By the time they are done with their checks, my induction and resumption date for band4 would have passed. This band 4 took 4 weeks before checks were completed. DBS, OT and references check.

Hello please I'm confused. Did a trust bring you over or what? Or you already in the UK before applying to these jobs?

Check Rightmove, Zoopla or OpenRent. Your budget and family size will determine the areas in greater London you should go for, but check for Zone 6 or places just outside of zone 6.

I have a question about this credit card stuff.. I am about to apply for one but I don’t understand when they charge the apr. Is it when you default in payment or whenever you use the credit card?

From the day of the expenditure but calculated on a monthly basis from the statement date. So if your billing period is 8th to 7th - the interest kicks in from the date the min payment is due which is usually 21 days. A rule of thumb is that interest will usually kick in about 56 days (give or take) from when the purchase is made.

DO NOT DEFAULT!!!! A default sits on your credit records for 5 years. It will scupper a lot of your chances. If for any reason, you can pay it off in full, pay the minimum and let it accrue interest.

Not quite - you usually have about 21 days from the statement date depending on when in the statement cycle you made the purchase. I've edited my first comment to make it clearer.
