Shoppers got more than they bargained for when a six-foot monitor lizard raided a supermarket and clambered over shelves in search of food.

The giant reptile sparked panic after it emerged from a nearby canal and ran into the 7-Eleven store in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

Staff and customers hid behind the counter as the beast rampaged through the store and tossed food and drink cartons to the ground.

A shop assistant said the lizard was in the store for an hour before police and reptile handlers arrived.

The employee said: 'The monitor lizard stayed on the shelf for an hour.

The rescue team arrived and chased it away.

But they didn't catch it, it just ran away into the bushes.

'I've never seen a monitor lizard that big in my life, so it was a surprise for one to come in the shop.'

Customer Narumpa Tangsin, who filmed the creature, said: 'They're dangerous animals, especially when they're angry, so I stayed back and recorded it on my phone.

Trust me, they never wanted to catch it, at least if I was there, I will catch it and request to pay for what I caught in their store even if it is one pounds or whatever currency they use, take it home, prepare it and snap to be posted on Nairaland for Lalasticlala to move to Frontpage.

This is huge and scary. Its lucky it wasn't in Nigeria, it would have been placed side by side with better palmwine and itself as peppered meat.

It wants to do some shopping for it's kids and extended family.
