The health workers altitude showed something is wrong somewhere because to the best of my knowledge as WHO IM, If you visit a household and you see eligible children, you have to see the parents first and if they are not around, you have to come back. This is because if you give them the vaccine and something unusual happened to them, you will be held responsible. Even in our documents, there is a provision for Non-compliance (Rx). In this case, we will have a heart to heart talk with them on the benefits of the vaccine and if after that they insist that their children will not take it, then will back off as simple as that.

Na someone like you dey easily enter big trouble. Why will you help a parent to make decision for his or her child. If you do that for my child, certainly you will be arrested. Any school that refuse to allow her pupils or parent that refuse to allow their wards or children take the vaccine should be arrested and the school closed down till further notice.

I work with the national Primary health Care development agency. I am part of the management support team. Prior to any campaign on polio vaccine, circulars and letters are distributed to all schools so as to be aware of upcoming campaigns and be duely notified. Each school authority is to allow children for mass vaccination. It is a MUST for each school to allow that to happen or will be reported to the appropriate authorities.

Now let me break it down. In vaccination, the main aim is to reach as more children as possible included churches, mosques, schools, Islamic school and were children gathers. Children from 0 to 59 months. We have 2 major forms of vaccination

House to house
Special teams

The house to house teams visit each household to vaccinate children. Those teams also go to school and do mass vaccination

Now to the issue of parents before any campaign a mandatory and compulsory visit will be made to the authorities including the local government chairman, councillor and all district heads both chiefs and kings

Mobilisation funds will be made available for dissemination of information whether through radio or tv stations will be made to inform parents of oncoming polio vaccination.

The parents already know that thier children will be vaccinated by trusted and well known health worker.

You are right. However in this case, I think the health workers that visited the said school were lacking in good inter-personal communication skill.
Also, in a situation where a school was not formally notified before the commencement of vaccination exercise, there is nothing wrong in giving the school a day more to notify parents. After all there's provision for two days mop during NIPDs.
Again I think the there's a gap in the social mobilization and advocacy activity leading up to the vaccination program in that area. Every school ought to be formally informed at least 3days before the start any vaccination campaign.

No school prevents health workers from vacinating children. There are times the children have already been vacinated in churches and some other places. The school needs to inform parents to know if their children should take it or not.
The last time my son's school put something like that on the whatsapp platform. Some parents said their children had already taken. I as a person I saw it as an opportunity for him to be vacinated and likewise some other parents. The health worker should have been patient.

I also own a school. We have a school policy and the section of Health is well detailed. Some parents allows it while some don't. So whenever the govt health officials come, we already know students who will get vaccinatted cos it was already documented during enrolment of the child.

Vaccination is a child's right. The school cannot stop health workers from administering polio vaccine. If those health workers come to your house and see unvaccinated children they have the right to give them the vaccine. No put school owner inside wahala

This is a sick, illogical and irresponsible comment on your part. Intelligence should tell you that Polio vaccination is part of the existing vaccination program which is assumed to have been administered to all kids of school age. The WHO also does not recommend the vaccine for children above the age of 5 years since they are not within the At-risk category. Ignorance is indeed a disease!
