If yes, I’m surprised you are yet to buy your own property. You’ve saved a good sum already and that money will buy you a flat/house outrightly in some parts of Scotland.

I will advise any single person to save up for a mortgage and buy a property before getting married. Doing so was one of the smartest things I did. Falzdbadtguy and ukmigrant take note of this.

I’m currently married and my largest household bill is childcare costs (£1100 per month as nursery fees for ONE child inclusive of all meals, nappies and wipes).

My wife also owns her own home which she bought before we got married. She currently rents the property on Airbnb and she makes a decent profit after deducting mortgage, utility bills, etc.

Tips

You're not allowed to put food or sharp objects (cutlery, blade, pocket knife etc) in your cabin luggage or carry on (hand bag/laptop bag), so pack smartly.

Tightly pack all your clothes, shoes, books, or weaves (if female) into your cabin luggage. Instead of folding clothes passively or mindlessly like we do when arranging our closet, roll each tightly into a bunch.This will squeeze out air & give you more space in the box to squeeze more clothes into. You can watch YouTube videos to learn this technique.

Now you're left with food items, sharp objects, and any cream/perfume exceeding 50ml (Only liquid of less than 50ml per bottle is allowed in the cabin luggage). Now arrange all these carefully into your main luggage.

For food items, put into ziploc bags or transparent polythene bag like pure water bags. Put different food items into each and label appropriately...e.g Melon, Ogbono, Ugwu vegetable etc.

For ladies carrying weaves, discard the packs to make your luggage relatively lighter.

Palm oil is not allowed. Don't even bother!

You don't necessarily need an industrial scale to weigh your luggage. Buy a regular domestic scale. You know the ones "Check your weight" guys carry around? Yes, that one. It's less than 2k.

To weigh, first stand on it and check your weight. Write it down or memorise it. Now put your luggage on your head and check your combined weight. Subtracting your own weight from the combined weight will give you the weight of your luggage.

Your allowance per main luggage is 23kg but aim for 21kg or max 22kg at home. Why? The scale at Murtala Mohammed Int'l Airport is forward by about 2kg. You don't want to stress yourself with reshuffling at the airport or trashing stuffs you bought with your hard-earned money. Pack smartly from home!

Airport staffs are not smiling again. Before they allow you pass/check-in a 23.9kg bag, you'll beg tire. Anything above that, they'll tell you to go obtain a ticket of $150 per overweight bag upstairs! You don't need that wahala in your life.

What else?

Remember I asked you to stuff all your clothes & books plus shoes into your cabin luggage? Trust me, it would have exceeded 8kg by now. You know the box itself will add to the weight as well.

Let me give you orijo.

1. Your laptop bag is not weighed. That's an extra space to put clothes, books, laptop (of course), charger etc.

2. Your hand bag isn't weighed either. If you're a lady, that's a plus. You can carry a laptop bag + your handbag alongside the cabin bag.

3. If you're eleru town council like me & you've utilised all available spaces yet you're still not within allocated kg limits, fear not. There's still a way.

Leave your original cabin luggage with somebody (eg family/friend who followed you to the airport). Let them act like they own the bag while they simply stand by it.

Check in your laptop bag as your Cabin Luggage. They'll tag it and return it to you while the two main bags are passed to cargo. Now remove the tag and stickers on your laptop bag and place it on your original Cabin Luggage you kept with your escort. You're done!

With these tips, you'll have a smooth sail luggage wise.


Extras....

Depending on how light or fancy you want to travel, those silly Echolac boxes are not your friend. 1) They'll add to the overall weight 2) They're not durable. Most would be damaged (broken handles, broken wheels, torn surface areas, etc) before you arrive your destination. How would you even lift a damaged box? You'll place it on your head maybe

Invest in a quality box. Might be pricey but it will last for years and save you from embarrassing situations. I don't know if/where those are sold in Nigeria. I bought mine in the abroad. This is my 5th year of usage and I travel very frequently. It's still intact.

If you're low on cash, buy those very strong bagco ghana must go bags as main luggage. Not the usual ones. This one is a bit recent & it comes in one color - grey! More like a grainy white mixed with black. It costs about N1,500 per bag. Nothing to be ashamed of. You wont even see it until your final destination after you check it in at MMIA, so you can still form posh in transit with your cabin luggage. Regular travellers use it a lot. It's very light and durable. For your information, they sell it in the abroad too. So what? In fact, its a life saver for people whose boxes get damaged at the airport. Just that they'll pay a few extra thousands more to procure it at the airport.

No use am as cabin baggage oooo. You'll look like Osuofia in London. Hehehe. Joking. Use a correct small sized box as cabin/hand luggage.

Third option is to source for lightweight boxes (rare) or lightweight travelling bags with wheels (looks like a piece of cloth with wheels attached when empty. The box-shaped compact ones are heavy).

Hi, being offsite for awhile now. The cost of living has just gone up from what it used to be pre covid but still very much affordable. You can get a job while studying. If your university is in Belfast, I can help you drop off your application for a care job where I work if you fancy that.

Wow! Please what area do you stay? Those nursery fees are really affordable especially the one for under 3, it's unbelievable! Like I could understand what that lady was talking about because childcare most of the time is soo expensive that it actually makes little sense working as you'll end up giving away all or any salary you earn to the nursery or nanny hence it seems pointless working for them.

in addition to what have been said by iamnotconfused about nursery places/funding, the government offers 20hrs a week (it will be increased to 30hours a week in 2020) for each child aged above 3 (depending on what month of the year the child was born).these free hours are also accepted at most private nurseries. there are also 'not for profit' nurseries that charge very reasonable fees. there is usually a waiting list for such nurseries so why not look around and see if there is any around your post code and then have your kids registered. there are both cheap and expensive private nurseries. there are nurseries charging around £35 and other charging as much as £55 a day. I strongly believe that if you had sort out affordable/reliable childcare, you can get yourself a very decent/well paying job.

on the business side of things, I cant really think of anything you can do that wont involve a driving license/reasonable amount of start-up funds.

I know a lot of people are looking at cheap/non-bulky/unique items that could be bought from china (aliexpress, etc) and then sold on platforms such as amazon and ebay. I know amazon has a certain feature where they keep your goods in their warehouse and they handle delivery/returns for you in exchange of a fee. You might want to look into that option.

Its been a really different experience which I'm enjoying.

I've done all d necessary things, only waiting to get my provisional DL. BRP, bank accounts, GP, NINo all sorted.

I've also been applying for jobs and luckily got one last week to resume July 2nd (though not the kind I really want but make man no just fold arms siddon for house), pay isn't too bad atleast for a newbie like me with no UK work experience and I'm not a professional. I have vast experience in sales, marketing and management (pharmaceuticals). Plan is to do it for few months while I take up some professional courses then switch to something bigger (God help me).

It's changed now to the Global Talent Visa but still same old rules mostly. Difference is the addition of the UKRI fast track route for academics.

I recently got my endorsement under UKRI but chilling as I had earlier made a Tier 2 application. If them never answer me in the next couple of weeks I'll just put in my app as na 3 months the endorsement dey last.

For any academic coming in for postdoc positions like RA or RF and position is for 2 years at least, pls inquire about the following:
1. Is the project funded by any of the UKRI research councils - ESRC, EPSRC or ERC (Horizon 2020) etc (pls check for list of endorsed funders)
2. Is the grant sum at least £30k (haba how much them wan come pay you ni)
3. Is the duration of the funding at least 2 years.
4. Is your employer on the list of approved employers (not necessarily a university, it could be the catapult centres, Chatham House etc.)

If you tick all 4 boxes pls tell your employer say na Global Talent you wan do o. No go do Tier 2 o. That one get plenty wahala o as your employer na your master for the 5 years you need to get settled (and for some, they may not meet that salary threshold when they want to apply for settlement). You get to work for who you like and get settled in 3 years (including years spent on Tier 2) using the Global Talent visa and the endorsement stage is practically under 2 weeks. Got mine in 3 working days.

If you don't ask, you don't receive. Don't limit yourself.

Not at the moment, but if you need an account with 3days of landing thats you best bet.
You're not limited to only one bank or account. Once you secure accommodation you can open an account with the traditional banks
They won't offer you credit immediately either but are more likely to offer you as a customer reasonable rates when they do. Building credit is multifaceted but all credit providers have access to your profile in all regulated banks

if you are coming to the uk on a skilled worker visa then your spouse’s visa category will be partner dependent skilled worker and that of your children- child dependent skilled worker. It wont be spouse visa as you have stated above. Dnt apply for the wrong category of visa as you will be denied and your money lost. So confirm very well.

Hi everyone. On this thread I am going to make a diary of my emigration to the UK as well as my daily experiences and adventures and any challenges I encounter along the way. I am a young Nigerian professional who just got hired by a UK organisation on a Tier 2 (general migrant) visa. I intend to spend a sizeable part of my life in the UK. I believe if everything goes well, I'll become a permanent resident (with ILR) in 5 to 6 years and can apply for citizenship a year after that.

My application was approved on the 27th of September, 2017, which means I have to be in the UK latest by 27th October, 2017. The entry clearance is valid for 30 days within which I need to have arrived in the UK and pick up the biometric resident permit (BRP) at the designated address given in my application.

So I welcome you to sit back, relax and watch it all unfold.
