Because they refused to refurbish the refineries, low oil price in the global market, Nigerian budget implementation will suffer; high oil price in the global market, queue returns in the gas stations. Incompetence has reduced it to damned if you do, damned if you don't. In both scenarios, Nigerians suffer.
/

You cannot refurbish refineries and then sell fuel from these refineries at a loss in the name of subsidy

Also, paying for subsides is difficult when the money comes from crude oil revenue, which is affected by price fluctuations

When subsidy goes, all this would end
You cannot make refining fuel unprofitable at home and expect not to import

What subsidy is going again? How many times will it go after going in 2016 and 2020

The era of fuel subsidy is gone forever in Nigeria, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, has said.

Speaking on an Africa Independent Television (AIT) programme on Monday, Mr Kyari said, “There is no fuel subsidy anymore in Nigeria. It is zero subsidy forever.”

Going forward, the oil chief said, “There would be no resort to either fuel subsidy or under-recovery of any nature. NNPC will play in the petroleum marketplace, just like another marketer in the space.”

You are not making any sense. So it is more profitable to drill oil, ship it to Europe to refine and then import the refined product back into Nigeria + the effective subsidy? Do you even understand what subsidy is?

There is no scarcity of products. These greedy marketers are trying to exploit us again like they did in the days of PDP

To be honest, the ONLY THING this adminstration has done right is to quell the perennial fuel scarcity we experienced with Obasanjo and friends

There was hardly any December Nigeria does not suffer nationwide fuel scarcity and it progressively became worse to include the months of November and January.

I remember a friend had to buy black market fuel for his small gen at N1000/L (yes, one thousand) in 2013. It was that bad.

But there were no queues in all the petrol stations along Ikorodu Road as motorists drove in to refill with ease.

The situation was the same around Ketu, Ojota and Mile 12.

A filling station manager told The Nation that marketers were hoarding the fuel in anticipation of an increase in the pump price.

MAYBE...

They want to see if Nigerians would still buy fuel at over the regular price.
It's a way of getting data to influence the decision on the plan to remove fuel subsidy.

Very unfortunate!

Don't understand how a major oil producing nation can experience fuel scarcity.

It's quite complicated when you think about, coupled with the fact that Nigerians have a knack for making seemingly simple things look so cumbersome.

/

1.Yes i do

2.Subsides is why the refineries are bad in the first place. We cut costs on things like maintaining the refineries to keep subsidy costs low, which is why they broke down in the first place.

3.Because of subsides, people don't want to invest in refineries unless you are Dangote who has the collateral to pay back loans taken for refinery purposes. Who wants to refine fuel above 200 naira and sell it at N40 as Buhari wants it, and then the subsidy pad does not cover the losses?

4.Anyway NNPC is repairing two refinereis.

5.If we want to refine fuel at home, then it has to be refined at a profit so that things like repairs, maintenance, staff salaries, staff welfare and upgrades can be paid for out of the profits made.

If we want to pay a subsidy, then we must tax each and every taxable adult in this country to afford it.

Niger has a working refinery. They sell fuel at N350 per liter. They don't have a subsidy. Thier refinery in the eleven years since it has existed has not broken down, and actively exports fuel to other countries because it is run profitably. We did not do that in Nigeria and we lost our 4 refinereis as a result. Venezuela has been selling fuel for less than the equivalent of N40, and their refining costs are much higher than us. And as a result their large 900000 barrel refinery can only refine 100000 barrels.

Yes, prices will be high. But that is the sad thing about business. Things cost money. You won't sell at a loss to help the poor, so why should we force it on the fuel indusitry? Especially since such a policy led to us having bad refinereis and refining abroad in the first place?

2016; PMS price at pump N87, landing price N132. NNPC raised prices to N145. Subsidy ended...till landing cost rose above N145, and then subsidy resumed.

2020: Crude oil prices were as low as 24 dollars per barrel. Thus production costs fell, and PMS price at pump fell to N124 per liter (actual market price). Government stopped paying subsides, since the low crude oil prices meant that subsides were not affordable...and resumed paying them when crude oil prices rose...meaning landing costs rose above N200 again. (they are now N282, and last june were N232)

Back in time

2011. fuel price N65 , landing cost N99. Government raised prices to N140 in 2012 Jan, but protests led by NLC, occupy Nigeria, Bubu and Tinubu FORCED government to reduce prices to N97, while landing cost was N99. By 2015...(see above).

1981: Fuel price 15 kobo, then there was a price fall in crude oil prices, due to a glut in the oil price. Government reduced subsidy spending on petrol, prices rose to 45 kobo per liter

The price of imported will be the cost of the imported fuel plus tariff, locally refined oil will be cheap and if it has to be subsidies then the country is subsiding production and not consumption.

Black market fuel made from stolen oil in rudimentary “bush” refineries hidden deep in the creeks and swamps of the Niger delta is less polluting than the highly toxic diesel and petrol that Europe exports to Nigeria, new laboratory analysis has found.

Shell, Exxon, Chevron and other major oil companies extract and export up to 2m barrels a day of high quality, low sulphur “Bonny Light” crude from the Niger delta. But very little of this oil is refined in the country because its four state-owned refineries are dysfunctional or have closed.

Keep in mind that the refineries where we refine fuel are not up to standard, so the cost of refining fuel at home may still be higher...especially since the new refienres would be standard refineries, not the bad ones in your article.

Also keep in mind that money for subsides comes from crude oil revenues, not from taxes as in other countries. And crude oil rpcies fluctuate, and are set to go lower in the coming years, meaning any revenue earned would not be enough to cover subsidy costs.
