Someone asked me a question and although I gave my advise, I wish to throw it open to see if we can get more opinion. Would you take a FinTech job or a bank job (not as a contract staff)?

The thing is, he's already employed with one of the traditional commercial banks in Nigeria. But he recently saw an opportunity to start with a FinTech company. The FinTech company is into payments, cryptocurrency, and uses blockchain.

He's worried of the job security of being in a FinTech company due to the political climate – Nigeria's stance on cryptocurrency. But the company is diversified into all forms of payments.

He has been working with the traditional bank for years and it's much like wasting one's career.

Would you continue with the bank job till maybe when you find a better offer at a secure place or take the FinTech job which offers better pay but has low job security due to the country's aggressive political climate on cryptocurrency?

Are bank jobs even secured? I know people that sacrificed years in the banking industry and were thrown out like a dead wood.

The best is to save up, invest and be an employer of labour..... None is worth it in the long run.

Banks will make sure they squeeze all the money they are paying you out of your life

Fintechs are better for me

Fintechs that are established pay well and they were won't stress you like banks

Life na about risk. If he’s not confident enough to leave his current job, he should continue. But if he feels he can handle whatever comes from switching to a new job, good for him. There’s nothing like job security if you’re still an employee. Anything can happen at any time. Even government lay off staff. Good luck.

To me, there are different gains attached to either of them. If he wants salary job security without much exposure and personal development, he can stick with his bank job but Fintech job is going to expose and diversify his ability and even if anything happens tomorrow cos of policies, he might be able to take a lot home and even stand on his own, trading crypto for people cos his experience will surely give him an open access to a lot of things, that's with the Fintech company

The essence of working at all is to make money. Go for the one that pays better. Have a mindset of not working forever for someone. Make your money and get something better for yourself. As long as salary job is concerned, no job is secured.

In my own opinion, i will prefer the fintech company. There is more to learn in a fintech firm, but it depends on personal future pan.

Only if you guys know the opportunities that will arrive in Fintech immediately the mumu leaves office. You'll grab any opportunities that comes with it. Today's banking system is failing, Fintech, digital currency, Blockchain technology are the future. Build your career in it. Learn it with every fiber of your being. So, when they sack you which will be almost impossible ( because you'll be so good). You can start yours.

Whatever rocks your both.

However the key factor in your decision making should be what department in the Bank you will be working in as well as what Kind of Fintech company is it you want to work in.

If the fintech has been in operation for at least 3 years then I think he should accept the offer so he can have an opportunity to diversify his skill set smiley

Hmmn, banking job itself isn't secured but the fact that you still have a better hope with the bank, I'll advise you stick to your intuition. Cryptocurrency hasn't come to stay in Nigetia's Feeble economy. If Fintech can allow for part time offer, you can go ahead and test the water but do not resign from your banking job.

There is no way he or she will work in the bank and not leave with something to improve himself or herself even after the banking job.

I once worked in the bank as a marketer and I am happy because of what I learnt in the cause of the job,I met a whole alot of people both good and the bad but in all,it was a nice experience.

Tell him or her to continue in the banking sector and learn something on the job.
Whatever i am today has been banking because I picked an interest in something which I earn alot from today.

My wife is a career banker in the operations, with 12 years experience.

Good luck to u guys.
