I once preached about this in church. The standards of the New Testament is far higher than that of the Old Testament if you understand it properly but people apparently enjoy following a prescribed rule especially when either curses or promises of increase are attached to it. Like you mentioned, a dedicated cheerful giver is far greater in the sight of God than a religious tither.
Someone up there gives tithe so that things will not be tight for him. So many nonsensical thoughts and teachings.
The Old Testament teaches us to give first fruits, tithes and offerings. We are Christians "Christ - like" by virtue of the death and resurrection of Christ.
Jesus gave his ALL. He expects us to go the extra mile for the Gospel and our brothers without complaining or grumbling; and not just removing bits from your income and expecting a truck load of blessings in return.

Christianity is the most confused religion in the entire world. No particular pattern to follow, with diverse churches and doctrines confusing their followers up and down. Nowadays we pay for such amenities, so why can't we take the tithe from our net income since we are to pay for all what they gave freely which made them request for 10% in the bible.
