Ukraine isn't a nation of 5m. It has 43m people, which is even larger than the Poland, Central Europes largest member in the EU. The Ukrainians would swamp EU countries looking for jobs. It was the massive influx of Poles and other newly welcomed EU members from Central Europe that made the British want to leave the Union. Even if allowed to join, I doubt EU member countries will allow them seek employment.

The war should be called off. Zelensky sadly speaking would have to eat humble pie while Russia gains a pyrrhic victory, with its economy in shambles due to crushing sanctions. It will also have citizens restive for change but a vicious crackdown on dissent and propaganda may help cage the population.
