UN helicopter crashes in DR Congo, killing eight peacekeepers aboard

Eight UN peacekeepers – six Pakistanis, a Russian and a Serb – were killed Tuesday when a Puma helicopter crashed in the troubled eastern Democratic republic of Congo, UN and Pakistani officials said.

“While undertaking a reconnaissance mission in Congo, 1 PUMA Helicopter crashed. Exact cause of crash is yet to be ascertained,” the Pakistani military’s media wing said.

It added that six Pakistani troops were among those killed.

The Democratic Republic of Congo army has explicitly accused Rwanda of supporting an armed rebellion in the east of the vast country, charges Kigali denied on Tuesday.

After months of suspicion and decades of mistrust between DR Congo and its neighbour Rwanda, a spokesperson for the North Kivu governor on Monday issued a statement saying the M23 “backed by the Rwanda Defence Force, (RDF) carried out incursions and attacked positions” of the army the previous night.

Saab wins live-training contract in Kenya
Saab has been awarded a contract to supply a Tactical Engagement Simulation (TES) capability to the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).

Under the contract, Saab will supply its standard laser-based GAMER TES system, including individual personnel detection devices (PDDs); detector systems for light tactical vehicles; laser projectors for a variety of infantry weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs); and simulated hand grenades and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The system will use the latest Urban Combat Advanced Training Technology (UCATT) Laser Engagement Interface Standard (ULEIS) laser code.

Hans Lindgren, head of business development for Saab's training and simulation unit, told Janes that the system will include sufficient equipment for a “light-role infantry battlegroup” of about 800 personnel. It also includes the exercise control (EXCON) and communications network to support fully instrumented live training. The communications network includes two mobile base stations, each of which can provide approximate coverage of 7–10 km radius, giving a total area coverage of more than 200 km² depending on the terrain.

The GAMER EXCON software provides detailed tracking and analysis of activity down to individual level, enabling thorough after-action review. The system does not include instrumentation for indirect fire from mortars, but this will be simulated using the Area Weapons Effects Simulator (AWES) system via EXCON.

Lindgren said that the system will be based at the KDF School of Infantry at Isiolo and delivery will be completed by the end of 2023. Saab will also provide training for users and maintenance personnel, and a limited support contract.

Rwanda is back at it, feeling confident after their Mozambican campaign.

Unfortunately there's too much redtape at the UN otherwise that "M23" would have been sorted by now.

It's what I was also thinking... I didn't know the UN had Pumas in the DRC, if they do then the Rwandans thought they were shooting down a South African Orxy without a doubt.

There's a reason our Oryx are always escorted by a pair of Rooivalk.

For the last 2 years, Monusco hasn't been paying for Rooivalk, because of UN budget cuts introduced by Trump. So our Rooivalk are used exclusively for FIB missions.
And so Monusco has to send out Pumas on reconnaissance missions.

I wonder if the Ukrainian Hinds are still there?

Honestly, some of these recon missions just need drones as the distances are short.

The drone contract was "irregularly" awarded to the Italian company Selex, and there've been complaints the drones aren't performing well in the tropical jungle environment.
It was really stupid to send a Puma on a recon mission a day after an attack.

Some of us pointed out M23 would be back after their defeat in 2013/4. Those who fled to Uganda were arrested, whilst those who went to Rwanda were put up in hotels.

Yes we are. The CSIR, various universities and some private enterprises are doing some excellent work.
Incidentally, our firm's venture capital division is mulling over funding a startup in the field.

To whet your appetite, here's the latest breakthrough from the 2nd ranked university in Africa (my alma mater is No.1; was 2 when I was there and overtook the current No.2; 6 SA universities in the Top 10 grin grin grin):

There were at least 2 Russian military build ups on the Ukraine border, it was obvious that the Russians will attack Ukraine, giving Ukraine reluctance to implement MINSK agreements. You don't need to be an intelligence officer to realize that.

Why would I believe Biden, the US has invaded nearly 43 countries in the last 50 years. Their last military invasions in Afghanistan and Iraq ended in spectacular military failures.

The primary reason for invading Ukraine is to ensure the historical borders of the 2 independent Donbass states were maintained. This has been the main bone of contention since the last 8 years.

The Russians seized Hostomel on the very first day of the war, and have defended it ever since, they could have easily created an air bridge if they wanted to, and inserted more troops, after all, the Russian military has a strength of 1 million troops. However they did not.

Granted, the Ukrainians have coordinated themselves better after the initial days of the attack, but the Russians are steadily advancing in the east, Mariupol has been all but taken. Nikoleav and Odessa would be next.

The TB2 drone has been very inactive in the war in Ukraine, it has mainly been used as a propaganda tool. Through-out the duration of this war, we've seen at most 5 publicly released TB2 Videos, the most impressive action by the TB2 been the attack of the Kherson air base.

The main threat Russian air assets face in Ukraine are from MANPADS.

With regards to Air superiority, Russian jets have been flying over 300 sorties a day in Ukraine. If that's not Air Superiority, I don't know what is.

Iraq had a large Air Force, the same way Libya had a large Air Force. Numbers on a piece of paper count for nothing when 90% of your fighter jets are unserviceable.

Iraq was also a large flat desert, perfect for air operations, Ukraine is not the same.
You made a lot of silly gaffes. First America didn't invade up to ten countries.

Secondly the invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq were not failures. The two governments were deposed. Iraq still runs a democracy till today. For Afghan, after the occupation of the US ended, the installed government of Afghanistan was the failure not the US.

Hostomel airport facilities has been destroyed by artillery fire and is practically useless now. Russian troops have mostly left there to other fronts.

Heavy fighting is still ongoing in Maruipol. The city isn't taken yet. There's also nothing to indicate that Russia intends to or will succeed in taking Odessa. That's wishful thinking from your head.

I talked about close air support missions and not flying sorties at 50k ft to release cruise missiles.

Iraq had a modern airforce that was made up of several SU-22, Mig 25, Mig 29. Due to the strength of the airforce and military. Op Desert Storm was the war that saw the highest losses of US aircraft. Not very high though wink

The end result of the USA 'S INVASION of IRAQ made IRAN A a very powerful powerbroker in who is in power in Iraq most people believe the PM of IRAQ is a figure head with the real powerbrokers coming from the mullahs headed by SISTANI who takes his orders from IRAN
Iraq like Iran is now dominated by the SHITE Religious ruling party , this was definitely not what the USA fought GW 1 & GW2.
AFGHANISTAN
The way the USA exited AFGHANISTAN in total chaos emboldened America's enemies even members of both parties said it was horrible . the very same people whom the US kicked out are now back in power ( TALIBAN). Women are now being excluded from education and everyday life outside the home , it is hard to see what success the USA achieved that is not being eroded every single day.
