Finally bit the bullet and jumped onto the Lithium train. Took delivery of brand new grade A Eve Lf280k last week and it has been an exciting journey making them into an SAY bank for a 48v setup.

Before I got the batteries I got a bench power supply to help with top balancing, orings terminal plugs for terminating the BMS balance leads, JBD 7S-20S 200A BMS ILSCO de-ox (for preventing oxidation when two incompatible metals meet)

I also used the opportunity to add to my panel capacity from 3kw to 5kw with the addition of 4x 540w JA panels (thanks to JustAskMannuel)

Currently too balancing the batteries (they are almost balanced currently at 3.6v per cell.

Would be providing updates once setup is complete.

Its not a straightforward answer..but lemme try to make it a bit easy to understand.
let me assume 12v 230ah lithium vs 12v 230ah leadacid, both have about 2.7kwh stored energy

lithium: you can theoretically use 90% of this capacity, without any damage to the battery, you can also put a load of 2.4kw on it, ie ac, sumo, etc. to last 30mins to 60mins, no issues, lithium can give you a minimum of 10yrs uninterrupted service. has 3k to 6k cycles

Leadacid: you can safely use 50% of this 2.7kwh, any percentage above this, the battery life will suffer. maximum load you can put on this battery is about 240watts. after all this pampering, leadacid can only give you 2 to 4yrs life. average leadacid battery has 300 to 800 life cycles.

1 cycle is counted as 1 rundown, so for lead acid, if you do 1 cycle per day. 800 cycles will give you barely 3yrs...before a sharp drop in performance is observed.
you can google more to understand better

Thanks

Nice one and welcome! no doubt it's going to be a great experience. Nice bench charger by the way.

True but they have a strong Union there and soldiers dey there... Them no dey sell fake there and if you have ISSUES with whatever you buy it can easily be resolved unlike alaba.

I'll check my mail.
No, I no longer use them as I can program the Quattro to switch based on all sorts of condition.

@Barezzi
Sent you an email, been meaning to reach out to ask about your setup, do you still use the voltage controlled switches?

depending on how fast u want it to charge, 2pcs of 200w panels is okay.

Alaba too have a very strong union and frown at people short changing customers. If you have any dispute there is a mechanism in place for that.

The seller pays fine and also replaces the item or refund when at default.

When next you have any dispute, go to the task force unit and make a complaint.

Weldone boss, DIY is cool..

One need to be super careful too, any short on those parallel cells is 4500AMP discharge oo

Good evening house. I need a solar setup quote for the following load.

1 laptop
1 standing fan
1 phone
1 powerbank.

I might add extra loads in the future. But, the are all going to be light loads. Thanks in advance.

Good evening house, more input and suggestion needed.

Congrats, nice setup! Is there any online shop that has the bench power supply? where did you buy yours from?

Bro that is story, alaba union is joke. If you buy a product from a major dealer and it is faulty the union will throw you back and forth and no replacement.

Thanks the way I install my panels reduces chances of short. Panels are actually paralleled at the combiner box (there is a positive combiner box and a negative combiner box) close to the charge controller. This way less amps are sent down the wire from PV. Downside is you get to use lots of wires.

He meant that you should be careful of not shorting out the bare lifepo4 cells you posted as they are all in parallel. You should put a covering over them to prevent any unfortunate event until you are done with the top balance.

Can't we do this thing without top balancing?
I'm not just comfortable with this balancing of cells.
If there is lithium battery that doesn't require balancing of cells, please let us know.
Until I see a lithium battery someone fixed and stayed for two to three years without balancing anything, I'll continue with my 50% DOD battery.

Top balancing is a one of Task!
Because cells don't have same capacity.

I have been using my cells for almost a year, no further top balance is required, cells remains close in voltage at the top end.

50% DOD is not cool at all, my cell still have 100% capacity I discharge mostly to 6%.. cheesy

you have not really understood the full capabilities of lithium battery, hence your comment
its akin to someone who grew up in the village, visited Lagos, island area /lekki/ banana island, and was so impressed with the skyscrapers and beautiful houses , so he turns around to say, Lagos is as fine as Las vegas...................... grin grin grin grin grin grin

, top balancing is not as dangerous or scary as you make it seem, its just a bit time and energy consuming. advanced users can do without top balancing, and simply install a good balancer with the bms.

top balancing is a one off event for lithium cells.

even your beloved leadacid battery theoretically should be top balanced before use,[hook up all the batteries in parallel and connect them to a good 12v 3 or 4 stage battery charger], but many installers skip this process...and that's the leading cause of battery imbalance and failure of leadacid battery

Why not buy a higher amperage charger for top balancing, a single 280ah cell usually ships abt half full. So u need to add 140 to 170amps. A 10amps charger will take 17 to 20hrs to do this for 1 single cell...then assume you have 16 cells for a 48v pack?....you are looking at over 2wks o.ie assuming you have power 247

Someone here advertised a 50amp charger, for top balancing some time ago, i think its Valto....it will seriously shorten this time by 500%.
