I don't enjoy going to the market. It's too chaotic.

I wear boxers and singlet. I do all my shopping right on my phone and it is delivered to me 2hrs later. By shopping online, I limit my exposure to toxic fumes, dirty roadside puddle, police extortion and random street fight. Moreover, by shopping online, I'm creating jobs for others as well as saving the planet from global warming. I will advise everyone living in a big city to buy groceries online, it may seem expensive but exposure to cancer causing fumes is detrimental to your health.

Where are you based? And where do you shop?May as well take a cue from you.

Poco sorry for intruding..how did you take those pictures without the women and passer-by feeling bad or something?
Was it with their permission?

They are Google images. I didn’t take them myself. I have a few I took and I did so with their permission. Some of them would allow you.

- I wear shorts and oversized tee most times. I like to see my legs in the market.

- Hahahaha. It is the hailing for me. I use a lot of “Daddy” and “Mummy” on those old people. Every other day I tell one of them they look like my favourite aunty or uncle, so I was drawn to them. grin grin

- I have one bagco I have been using for months. I wash it when I get home and dry it for the next market day.

- I make a list in my phone too. I start making the list within the week. That is how I tend not to forget anything.
grin grin grin I like your bargaining tactics. So haggling/bargaining is an art in Nigeria, just like in Kenya? I have found, in my travels, that its not such a common tradition or skill, as I once thought. Even in some of our other neighbouring countries in East, Central and Southern Africa. Am glad that Nigerians are also into haggling.

In Kenya, this art has been perfected too, especially in markets, such as the one you refered to. If your smiling and 'hailing' tactics don't work on a seller, buyers switch automatically to the extreme opposite. You should see Kenyan women in the markets, faces suddenly filled with grief, palms heavy on cheeks. Narrating to the sellers all the bad luck and grief, they have encountered in the week. Just so a few shillings can be sliced off the 'final' price. cheesy

The funny thing is that the sellers always also counter. With their own brand of concorted long stories of doom and suffering. Most times about the calamities and biblical plagues, they encountered in the process of acquisition of the products. Just so they can maintain their prices. grin grin grin

When the sellers state their prices it is always met with a woooiii! A cry of deep pain, followed by the above stated acting procedure. After the sale is made, everyone naturally switches back to their bubby, smiling, original personalities. Like not even a single emotional connection just happened. cheesy
Try that on your 'favourite' aunty and uncle in the market next time. cheesy

I dread buying meat. I think buying meat is the true test of your negotiation skills because this is where you can be ripped badly. Other items like frozen food, vegetable oil and seasoning cubes have fixed prices. Even if there is a difference, it would be N20-50.

But you see meat (beef or goat meat)? If you snooze, you would lose badly. grin

To buy meat, I make a mental calculation of how many pieces of N50/100 meat I can get from it. Just the way bukas cut their meat. Then take away another sum as a discount on bulk purchase.

Thankfully I have a butcher that does me well now and my calculation never fails when I get home to cut into my preferred size.

Yes I cut myself. Even my chicken and turkey, I cut myself. There are dedicated knives for this sha.

Just buy it by weight. Beef is currently 2,500 per kg in almost any market in lagos and it has been that way for over 6 months now. You can even buy half kg at 1300. Even when they don't have a scale they would burrow from the nearby chicken and fish sellers. Also check that the scale is on zero when the pan is ontop because they would always try to cheat by setting the scale to start counting after zero. Ask the seller to remove any bones from the portion he is selling because bones have a higher density and tend to weigh more. Once they notice you know their tricks and games the dubious ones would usually decide not to sell. Don't even bother hassling with them, there are always many more sellers to buy from just a step away.

Not every market sells in kg. Many use the bargaining method and are not open to using scales. Thanks for the advice still.

I like to wear a pair of Jean trousers, any old top and waterproof slippers or covered shoe depending on which market...the shoe must be waterproof and a bit high so I can step into any where and move anyhow. I always look like a maid anytime I visit the market sha.

I remember the day my friend decided to pay me a surprise visit by waiting at my gate after one of my market trips....the guy couldn't stop laughing. He had seen a lot of my executive looks and my maid look was a complete shock grin.

I buy foodstuff from the popular Oyingbo market. The time I go depends on what I want to buy.

If I wish to restock my eja gbigbe (smoked fish) I go early in the morning like 5:30 or 6:00, you would buy in big baskets to last for 2 months. By 7 in the morning the "Depes" have disappeared cause their wares are exhausted.

What's Depes?

When ripe... organic fruits would attract flies, ants, bees etc .... genetically modified fruits never.... they would eventually break down into a pool of liquid. Organic meat will be swarmed by flies .... non organic... like the nice clean neat ones from the Shop Rites etc supermarkets flies will rather starve to death than eat.
