Re: 4 Things You Should Never Include On Your Resumě by BrutusOj(m):
Some employers demand to know why an applicant remained idle for some years where one or two years gap exist between the last related job experience and the time of applying for the current one. Trying to explain reasons for not adding your last experience which isn't relevant to the job you are being interviewed for may affect your chance of getting the job as some panel members would think you just cooked it up. Some others would think you are not employable for being unemployed for years. It's safer to add all your years of experience no matter what.

age, sex, or marital status can be included if the job being applied for demands it

As far as Nigeria is concerned, personal info. like dob, age and sex is required. Though these shouldn't affect the decisions of the employer, but na naija we dey. You can't even sue the employer for discrimination on those grounds unlike other developed countries.
Re: 4 Things You Should Never Include On Your Resumě by Awoleesu(m): 1:43pm On May 12, 2022
In reality, there is no single thumb rule for writing your résumé.

There are different formats expected from different job roles, which a résumé attempts to clinch. Things like professional experience for professional job , skills set for job roles that target such and academic qualities for roles that place importance on such.

Most importantly, a job seeker has to keep different formats and styles of résumé/CV and update each time s/he finds a job advert that suites his qualification/competencies as advertised by the recruiter.

Some employers specifically demand that applicants include their personal details on their CVs. Other Job roles state specifications like the preferred gender, age bracket and even race (nationality).

So, a winning résumé, in essence is that one that addresses the requirements of the particular job role. And I think that's the most important factor a job seeker should bear in mind.

Everyone wants to get their dream job, but sometimes it can be hard to get even a foot in the door. The first step to getting a great job is having a great resume.

If you're applying for jobs and no one is responding, you might have made some common mistakes on your resume. Here are four things you should never include on your resume, and also some tips for writing a great one.

1.Your personal information like date of birth, age, marital status, sex, etc. The reason why most persons include some of these on their resumes is because they see other persons doing it. They've never stopped to ask themselves 'how does including this information on my resume make me a better candidate for the job or internship'

2. Unrelated work experiences and skills: Know what skills are related to the job you want and what isn't important. If it's not relevant, leave it off! If I'm applying for the role of a front desk officer, my previous experience working as a video creator or graphic designer shouldn't be stated on my resume as these two don't relate.

3.Photograph: While a photograph can be helpful if you're applying for a job where your appearance is important (like modeling or acting), most employers will be more interested in your skills than how you look. For some countries especially in Europe, this is accepted but in other countries, it's a no no.

4.Reference: This section should also be taken off from your CV as it's of no importance. Instead of including the contact and address of your referees, just write 'to be provided on request'.

If you're careful about including only the right things on your resume and leaving out everything else, your chances of being called for an interview would improve greatly.

alaye num 1 is d num one on d list jor. Why won't employer knw ur gender or age. Where they needed a 20yo man u are telling me till d day of interview and dey see a 50yo grandpa. Oga na d first tin abeg.
Re: 4 Things You Should Never Include On Your Resumě by Sified(m): 1:51pm On May 12, 2022
DOB and Gender is not necessary. See, in some countries, it is even illegal for potential employers to ask about or require documentation or proof of employees' and applicants' sex, gender, religion and even age.

But, if as you said, the job advert states that they require a certain gender for gender balance as some would say or they put age requirements as I've seen before, then it is wise to edit your CV and put the info they ask there, if not... remove it.
omorttee4u:
I don't know if I read well, do you mean date of birth and gender description shouldn't be included in CVS? I just don't get it. In most of the job advert. All those things are of their requirement.

Not in all cases op. Some organization will trash your CV if you chose to be unnecessarily brief.

Some hiring managers need certain specs. for certain roles. Some organizations require 40+ for certain roles. Certain organizations prefer males for his risk roles. To what end are you withholding basic info about yourself?

There's no one size fit all.

Hmm.. I really differ on this...as an employer, if those details aren't there... Off course, such applicant application is straight for the trash bin... Each of those information are graded for my pre-selection.
As much as I agree that this days, reference can be provided upon demand, it is not out of place..
Interestingly back then as a young applicant, I got my first job in a multinational company just because one of my referee was a benefactor of the company's MD... Upon seeing her name, the MD required I get a formal letter from her to verify if I truly knew her.... And that was how I got the job by the grace of God.

Wanna ask just out of curiousity, no: 4 tips, if one have a very very strong connect, say governor or a strong personality, should it still be left "available on request" or should be included?
never say it, cos it may not be needed, and if it is not needed he may see you as someone without merit thereby relying on the reference to be favored.
i'll advise you to just obey what the op said: 'to be provided on request' seeing this he knows that you have a reference if he need it thereby will be interesting in knowing your own

What you said here should only be follow,if a particular person is the only one that applies for a particular job opening or position (which is not always the case) or your Cv already has information that will make you standout amidst the rest, leading to curiosity about you from the recruiter, hence they might take the stress of reaching out to you to get your reference info....

Anything aside this,it is always advisable to put your reference and some other Info the OP striked out in your CV, most especially when applying for highly competitive position, no recruiter will have the time to be calling you to ask about your reference, why not put it there in the first place

I am a recruiter and I can tell you for free that one of the first CVs we shove aside are the CVs with no Date of Birth. Your employer is very interested in it.
Your Gender is also required, marital status may not be as much important but adding it is not a bad idea.
Photography-You are right
Unrelated skills-You are right
Reference-pls some recruiters find it offensive seeing that narration " to be provided on request"
Bottom line is understand the Nigeria Labour market Vis a Viz recruitment, remember you CV finally gets into the hands of your potential employer who will not start calling for missing details.
I have been seeing this new styles of CV and I think it is not really for the Nigerian Environment.
Nigerian Employers want to know you before meeting you.

The guy who wrote this is obviousoy not in Nigeria. Some companies will throw your CV into the paper bin if you don't include certain information. Some companies specifically request female or male applicants for specific reasons and someone is here saying you shouldn't add your gender.

Some companies also ask for specific age brackets. In this case, year of birth is important.

Some employers will give template to follow and ask for personal details including date of birth, marital status, number and even names and ages of children. Especially when you are applying for a lecturing job. I think different sector all require different resume format and details.

Your number one is incorrect... I think you need to get your facts straight before you come here and misinform people... Even for companies with online application forms... All of these information are required... So please next time ask people with first hand experience before you put up things like this..
