I have to create a new account just for this.

Last week, I had rain fall into my house and soaked my HP laptop. Even though it wasn't deeply affected, I had the fear that sooner or later, some issues will begin to develop. So I began to nurture the mind to buy a new laptop. This time around, I wanted to buy a MacBook.

I never had any knowledge of it's specifications or how it works. So I entered Facebook and went to the marketplace and began to search. I saw different laptops but lots of it were above my budget. I was just able to deep my hand into my savings to pick out 100k.The savings is for my marriage this December.

Chatted with many sellers and had one even come around and I checked and didn't like it because the battery life was just 2hrs and the processor was a duo core..

Then I keep checking, and I saw a new advert. She put 130k and I priced her down and she agreed to keep it at 110k. She claimed it was her laptop and that she was into graphic designing. And she said she was currently at Delta state to deliver a job she was called to do. She promised to come to Abuja on Wednesday but later called to tell me that she wouldn't be able to make it and postponed to Thursday.

On Thursday, she asked me to meet with her at jabi mall Abuja. I set and took a drop there and we met. She showed me the laptop and I check and saw the icloud and I asked her for the password. She said her brother logged that in and that she was trying his number but it w as switched off. And that she will send me the password that night. That was after the transactions and we finally agree to go with 100k.

I got home and made some discovery that the laptop wasn't hers... I checked the email registered to the icloud and the guy used his full names. So I searched and got his phone number and called him but it wasn't reachable. So I texted him and asked if his laptop was stolen and that I was willing to return it back to him. Then, on Friday he called me and told me that just two days ago, one of his workers made away with his gadgets and external drives and even stole other worker's belongings.

My problem now is, I bought the laptop and paid for it. He's willing to repay me but I don't want to have the police involve. He had reported the case to the police and I sent him the girl's two phone numbers and they've started tracking her. I have my fears that the guy will want to turn me in... All I wanted to do was to return the laptop to him and have my money paid to me. I don't like getting involved with the police because I don't trust them. They always have a way of turning things around. And if it will cost me my 100k, I wouldn't mind having my peace and handling everything to God.

I regret ever trying to buy online. I am self learning programming and I am a teacher as well. I learned that MacBook pro are good laptops for programming and efficient. infact, few moments the laptop was with me, I know that the product is really good and worth the price.

Go to the nearest police station, request to see the Dpo, tell him your story and ask him for assistance. If he is a man with conscience he will do the right thing though you are highly involved. No reciept and it's a big offense. You can spend some months in jail of that guy gets to you first with police officers and you will beade to pay heavily

I swear to God, I never knew anything about MacBook until I began to search for it. people selling theirs will write the specifications and I was learning in the process.... Some people will screenshot the laptop details and I will read it too... I was learning as I was making my research. Also, the first guy that brought his own, told me a little about it, he even told me the difference between MacBook pro and MacBook air.

I came here for help and I am not a liar.

Lol... You said the MacBook is worth the 100k But you are the one running kiti kiti kata kata grin grin over 100k!

Anyway, brace up, there's no way Police will not be involved! Do as advised already, gather your receipts, get a lawyer and a Police before the case escalates into something else!

You dont need to worry too much...you need to take command of the situation. Stop allowing anybody involved tell you what to do, start telling him what you want.

Drop the laptop somewhere and tell him to go and collect it there, give him time and place.

If you want your 100k back, do you have any further information about the girl that might be useful to him? If yes, you can sell that information to him for 105k that is plus your transport wasted so far. Have him send the money to a POS vendors account you provide before giving him the critical information that he needs.

Everything u do is by proxy bro. You must act like a lone wolf, trust nobody right now.

Did you pay cash?

If you did it would be had to prove you bought it off the thief.

If you paid with transfer , that's proof that you actually unwittingly bought a stolen product. Not a crime if you can prove you unintentionally purchased a stolen product but knowing the police they would turn it around on you. Secondly, don't think the owner is ready to part with his own hard cash to get his stolen property back. He is only goading you to return it and from there hand you to the police to fish out the culprits .As it is, you are the prime suspect. Even if you claim defense that you contacted the real owner , know that the police will say that because you could not login the icloud account, the laptop became useless to you and you were now trying to fleece the owner for more cash.
Re: I bought a stolen laptop and this is happening by cRobo: 8:39am On May 22, 2022
My little opinion is thus

Arrange with the owner of the laptop to come pick it up and stay far away from the pick up point and see if he is being accompanied with police which will definitely be on disguise

If you are certain he is alone

Drop the laptop with someone maybe at a fast food and walk and direct him to go pick it up but stay far away and watch pick the laptop

But stay away from a direct meeting with him

I have seen similar situation like this
If you get arrested dude
You will pay for every thing that the guy claims to have been stolen from him and you won't be able to pay it all because the guy will falsify claims

Just be careful

Report your case to the police first.
Make sure the pick-up place is at the police station.
The owner is a fool. Instead of him to be happy, he wants to use you as a bait to get his thief.

Another thing that can prove your innocence is your ability to show a receipt that u indeed bought this from someone.

If u can go back to screenshot the advert on jiji...it may also save u alot.

But like i said earlier,u may be tracked and arrested. And also, pray it was not at gun point this system was stolen...that may lead to another discussion.

Fear Nigerians and Nigerian police more.
If police do u something, then u will know that Nigeria is not for u an I.

You have 3 options:

1. Quickly run naked to a nearest police station before Monday and demand to see the DPO and table your matter.

2. Get yourself a lawyer…..he knows what to advice/to-do

3. Dump the laptop, break your sim and run to your village grin grin

I am 100% sure you can’t escape prison if that guy should lay his hands on u. An item purchased without a receipt is automatically an offense before the police.

You’d better screen shot your convo with her; Where you found the advert and account details for the transaction; and let the guy see them. That I believe could exonerate you.

Most people telling you to get the service of a lawyer or police are persons who would do otherwise of what they are advising you. Be careful.

You claim you don’t know about Apple- How then do you know about iCloud and can bypass it. I hear u sir.

This is quite tricky.
Why don't you call the girl, tell her what you discovered about the laptop and hear what she has to say.
The guy maybe lying about the girl working for him and stealing his ATM.
It may be a relationship gone wrong.
If she confirms the laptop isn't hers but was stolen, best bet is to go to the police first, even accept to drop the laptop, telling all that transpired. It may cost you more cash, but far less than being tagged an accomplice.

The moment that I realized that the laptop was a stolen laptop. I made a search and discovered the real owner. I contacted him via his phone number asking him if he had his laptop stolen and if he wanted it that he should come and get it.

The laptop was barely two hours in my hands when I made the call to the real owner.

How can I be blamed? Infact, I should have bypassed the icloud but I refused to. I just wanted giving it to the real owner citing the trauma that he'd be going through having his laptop stolen from him.

Did she issue you a receipt?

Have you screenshotted your chats with her on purchase of the laptop as well as that of others you were negotiating with?

with the above and the fact you reached out to the initial owner means NOTHING can happen to you.

unnecessary fear can only make you look guilty
Re: I bought a stolen laptop and this is happening by Promoter2: 10:01am On May 22, 2022
1. You bought a stolen item. Nobody cares if you knew or not.

2. You contacted the real owner and willing to offer him his own laptop in exchange for cash. That is absurd. Simply means you couldn't use the stolen laptop and tried to get money from whom it was stolen from.

3. You buy laptop wey dey icloud yet you went ahead to pay.

If Police get you or you go there report yourself, wetin them go do you ehn.

You're in a mess I'm not gonna lie to you.

I would advise you to get a lawyer and narrate everything to him or her, and stay on standby for anything that follows.

You go spend wetin pass 100k x5.

Why would you even buy MacBook without issues of #100k and claim you didn't know it was stolen?

Don't even raise your hopes that Police will help you, na this kind thing them dey use chop.

I learned that MacBook pro are good laptops for programming and efficient. infact, few moments the laptop was with me, I know that the product is really good and worth the price.

etc

please I need your inputs.
find a safe Place(mall security lost n found & their camera shouldn't sight u) to drop the laptop and let him pick it up from there. Forget ur 100k else u will spend much more trying to free urself. Na this kind case police dey use shine

Really sorry for your ordeal,it's sad that you have to go through all this in order to purchase online.

You wey get nairaland, the computer section dey,the technology marketplace dey, believe me they are legit hustlers there selling gadgets at affordable prices. Many NAIRALANDERS will vouch for them because they had deliver on several occasions.

I doesn't know the year of the Mac you purchase cause you say you don't have much knowledge of the specs. To be frank with you if the price is too cheap to be true something must be fishy somewhere.

A Mac for that price could be defective or even old modern from year 12 upward you can't get it at such cheap price only if the person knows you or he is trying to dash it out.

I wish that everything goes well if you are willing to look into other brands you can reach me out I promise you a good deal at affordable price, while if you can wait for it to be shipped (i.e the Mac) I promise to provide you with various variety direct from USA.You're to choose your preference and untill you're okay before we will go ahead with the shipping. But definitely not at that Note:payment only after i deliver.

I need help please..

This evening, I spoke with the guy that owns the laptop and I asked him to come and take the laptop from me and even if he doesn't have the money I used in buying the laptop that he should just come and take it.

His body language is telling me that he wants to have me arrested. The discussion is about me helping to track down the girl. And I don't know the girl. He said the girl started working with him since 2017. He said the girl stole his ATM card and also went away with his phone and other worker's items.

Did I do anything wrong with calling him to return his laptop?

The laptop is still in my position and I want him to come and take it.

I feel like I did the right thing but it seems like I did the wrong thing.

As nigerian police standard, you are an accomplice. You will be arrested, the lady might escape if she sense wahala. you will be labelled someone who receive stolen goods and be paraded. That's how it works in Nigeria. You will be sent to prison by the court.
Mistake you did was to call the guy. If someone was injured and killed during the robbery nko? if the police was reported to during the robbery?

Best thing to do now, if she is playing smart to return the money, which she cant even, because you have exposed your self more by calling the owner, arrange a third party fake transaction with her for new gadgets after it has died down, then pick her up. You can be proactive by going to police station and tell them what you want to do and what really happened. You will likely spend small but it might safe you incase the owner take a step.
