Why Envy Could Also Be A Good Thing

Envy in itself is not a bad thing.

It is how one envies that makes envy to either be a bad or good thing.

It's the kind of envy that would drive someone to do evil that is a bad thing, but that which inspires or challenges someone to do good so he can become like what he envies is good.

In the Bible there are two major characters that perfectly illustrate the bad and good kinds of envy. They are the Pharisees and Disciples of Christ respectively.

Jesus Christ was a much envied character because of the rare degree of Wisdom, Word and Works He displayed.

It made the Pharisees envy Him to the point of wanting Him dead.

Matthew 27:17-18 (KJV)

Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ?
For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.

But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

On the other hand, envy made Jesus' disciples love Him even more and aspire to emulate Him.

Envy made them sit down at His feet to learn from Him how He was able to do the things He did, so they could do likewise.

Envy made them not settle for any less than everything He was.

Matthew 14:28-29 (KJV)

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

Envy made them not to be comfortable when they tried but failed to replicate His great Works, but ask Him why and where they failed so they could succeed next time.

And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

It was envy that made them to humble themselves and remain patient with Jesus, even when many others left, so He could prepare them to the point that the same Spirit which was upon Him would come upon them after the departure of Jesus, that it would be as though He never left. As they would take over from where He left off, to replicate His Ways, Word, and Works upon the Earth.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

And by the hands of the apostles were many signs and wonders wrought among the people; (and they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch.

So the problem is not envy but how one envies, and the disciples of Christ are very good examples of how to envy someone else.
