Prayer before mean does absolutely nothing of the sort. Prayer is not meant to be used as some sort of antidote or talisman.

It is an indirect prayer against his own death. But the addition of the condition only makes it appear inconsequential.
He would have actually preferred not to die...if he had the choice to make.
For example, if a child should say; "Mom, please I want bread, but you can give me if you want to".
This means that the child actually wants the bread but he is afraid of seeming confrontational thereby appealing to the mothers power of choice. But we must not deny the fact that the child actually wants the bread.

And there is no difference between you and those who pray in terms of life occurrences.

For example, you see a group of people who die as a result of food poisoning in a restaurant; does it mean none of them prayed ? Or they prayer but their prayers were not answered ? Or their faith was not strong enough ? You get to see that both the prayer person and the non prayer person die together in the restaurant.
If that is the case, of what use was their prayers before eating the food ?
I know Christians will come with the excuse that it is God's will. But we have to be realistic.

Irrespective of my believe, I am always open to opinions. I always tell them that I am never after winning the argument. If I do not understand the Bible, if you can make me understand the Bible by answering the questions I have, then I will gladly embrace the Bible... There is no big deal there.
You have to ask questions because their God...or rather, God whom is believed to have created man, gave him the power to ask questions. If man doesn't make use of that power, then the power is useless, then God's creation is useless, then God is...let me stop there before I would incite anger in some persons
